@BlackberryViolet apparently you can buy them on the internet to "plant" on development sites.

I have no idea if it's true, but I can believe it.

I have to deal with the protected species officer at work, and I came home one day having had some interesting chats about bats with her. DD1 said "ooooh does she do giant pandas as well?!?".

Sadly we do not have packs of giant pandas roaming the South East, therefore I suspect not...

Yeah for England not to follow NI and France would be odd, I would think.

I think really Boris would be glad to do this and get the unions off his back.

TheGreatWave · 18/06/2020 16:57

What strikes me about Nicola is she doesn't seem to know much about how some of the Scots live / day to day lives. It is like she lives somewhere else

I wanted to say that, but feared I would just be a po-faced English woman. My holiday experience is very much the borders and I can see it wouldn't work there. (Though maybe the Borders is a bit forgotten as she has the least fans there.)

Orangeblossom78 · 18/06/2020 17:00

Maybe she just sees it as the places she imagines she would like it to be or something.

KaronAVyrus · 18/06/2020 17:03

She’s just been In power too long. It eventually drives them all nuts.

Hopefully he will also pay attention to the fact that it was agreed WITH the head teachers' organisations and not just announced.

I am totally prejudiced against Johnson because I thought he was a mendacious, lazy git before he was ever in the running for PM, but he is just so shite at his job.

That Marcus Rashford thing appals me, because even though I think it was the right decision and I think Rashford is a smart young man, I don't really want to be in a country ruled by footballers.

For every Rashford or Raheem Sterling there are 20 Neville Southalls. Even a lying waster who has been elected PM is a better leader than a social media mob. Unless the lying waster makes his decisions based on mob demands.

Merkel is doing OK.

I'd take her over any of the UK leaders.
@BarkandCheese - we've had a recent vet palaver too - ring surgery on arrival , consultation on the pavement , wait while vet takes said animal in to examine etc and " faint " lol when they come out with what needs to be done a an estimate of the bill .

Love the title by the way - have a vision of furious " Dick Dasturdly " type characters whizzing round the Arc
We’ve had a lot of vet appointments recently for our cat, two dogs and horse. Our regular small animal vet is OTT with phoning when you get there, masked vet coming out and initial consultation happening on the pavement outside, then an arm’s length handover.. all happening in reverse after treatment and no in person payment allowed. The emergency small animal vet is a bit more relaxed - I could wait in the waiting room, pay by card there and then but not allowed into the consultation. And then the horse vets are completely relaxed - no masks apart from when needed for clinical reasons, no distancing - everything completely normal (but then I suppose if you’re dealing with huge animals that could potentially kill you on a daily basis, your risk assessments are probably a bit different ..)

KaronAVyrus · 18/06/2020 17:07

Merkel must be the exception that proves the rule.

AnxiousElephant77 · 18/06/2020 17:12

@Nih Completely agree with all that. I could say more but I think my views are too inflammatory so I'll just nod and keep my big gob shut.

ButterMeCrumpets · 18/06/2020 17:12

I went out in the garden earlier in full PPE. Gloves and plastic face shield. Had to stake a rose bush which had fallen over a bit and the bloody thing always tries to kill me when I go near it.

That's the only time I will be wearing my PPE Grin

NannyPhlegm · 18/06/2020 17:14

I agree completely Nihiloxica

FluffyKittensinabasket · 18/06/2020 17:14

Someone on the washing shopping thread on AIBU is apparently terrified of dying and thinks Covid19 is carried by mosquitos.

I wonder if she ever drives a car?

I drove past someone working in his garden in PPE the other day. My initial thought was he must be a loon but maybe he also has a vicious rose bush. Grin

I've been pondering risk assessment generally over the last few weeks.

I assume that people who are the most risk-averse, when it comes to this virus, also don't generally indulge in high-risk behaviours?

For example- I do karate. I regularly put myself at risk of broken toes, broken nose, twisted knees etc etc. My fellow karateka feel the same way about The Virus as us anti-dementors. There surely must be a correlation.

Also- those who are still (or did) washing their shopping/quarantining it- will they become more susceptible to other germs? Haven't we been told, over the years, that perpetually disinfecting things has led to weaker immune systems? Will this period of frantic disinfecting lead to even weaker immune systems down the road?

Orangeblossom78 · 18/06/2020 17:19

Agreed Nihiloxica

Some of them are just so negative and can never see the way to a compromise or just using common sense. baby groups I see here, in the park, babies spaced out, no problem. Lovely

But in their doomy corner they are never allowed again...

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 18/06/2020 17:22

Various people on the social distancing in schools thread think we're all going to DIE and I don't understand that deaths from chicken pox aren't as real as people DYING from Covid. Pity, I thought that thread was reasonably balanced earlier.

BarkandCheese · 18/06/2020 17:25

The company DH works for are working on developing a UV sterilising system. They were actually working on it pre covid with an eye to the cruise industry, it’s potentially a way of sterilising entire rooms in one go. Maybe they’ve got this all wrong and should be looking at a home market, a big box you shove all your shopping in, a quick zap, and you no longer need to bleach your bananas and rinse your mince.

TeacupDrama · 18/06/2020 17:26

the 5 miles in Scotland doesn't apply to shopping ( as many people live more than 5 miles from a supermarket) nor does it apply to visiting friends or family but just recreation and leisure so if you go to supermarket 10 miles away can you go to the park afterwards? or do you have to drive until 5 miles from home then stop for recreation!!!!!

BakewellTarts · 18/06/2020 17:27

The Arc de Triomphe is another great roundabout. Good pick!

I think that lots of folks haven't got a clue about risk assessment even the professionals and it's the field I work in.

I think Germany and South Korea have both done well with managing the virus. And in particular contact tracing.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 18/06/2020 17:29

shodan I think so. I’ve spent half my life with horse manure under my nails and on my clothing - it’s an all-natural and organic social-distancer at Tesco. 😁

orangeblossom one of mine cut his head open on one of the islands. Bled like a stuck pig. No bus to the hospital for nearly 48 hours and I didn’t have a car. Phoned nhs Scotland and they really didn’t have a clue and seemed to think it was like living in Cumbernauld and not knowing whether to head east or west. Finally managed to speak to a medic originally from the Hebrides who understood the predicament.

@ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson those threads always start off fairly balanced then the siren call goes out for the usual dementor-attendees and it all goes south 🙄 Same old same old!

HeadSpin5 · 18/06/2020 17:36

Can’t keep up with these threads but just reading them has kept me sane, thank you!

Drivingdownthe101 · 18/06/2020 17:37

The thing is, they’re going to be so disappointed when schools do reopen without social distancing. Because they will... they have to.
