This'll be thread number 13, I think.

Let's hope it's a lucky one Grin

We were in Tenerife when lockdown happened on March 16. The army were on the streets the next day, telling us in 4 languages to stay indoors.

Fortunately we had an apartment and were allowed to go out for food so we had a slow dawdle to the supermarket that had a wet fish counter

We were evacuated on the 18 th . My god it was like a scene from exodus, planes were landing and taking off within minutes and there were still thousands we were cheek by jowl with in the airport. They’d made an attempt at social distancing but it was carnage

People sat on the floor, one eatery open, I reckon they wanted rid of us tourists before it got tough.
I felt so sorry for a welsh couple in a hotel opposite, who isn’t reknowned for its cuisine, whose pool We were allowed to use.
Bless them they’d come on a 4 day break. They’d had the Friday and Saturday and Saturday night they were at one of the ( noisy) bars and the shutters came down at midnight.
They were then literally incarcerated in their hotel Sunday and most of monday.
The husband had a dietary disorder couldn’t eat a fruit or a vegetable without being ill, so they relied on restaurants for food. Every single one of them were closed with the chairs and tables all stacked up. They were sat by the pool ( which closed at 3 on Monday) literally waiting for the bus to the airport.

I didn’t realise we would be joining them on the Wednesday as we still had 10 days to go at that point.

When we got home you filthy lot 😂😂😂 had pinched all the bog roll so we HAD to go and get some didnt we 😂. Despite bringing back 16 rolls of the stuff we had in the apartment. To be fair my dd had dropped off a 9 roll pack, and my ds had pinched two of them.

On the Friday, still exercising our new freedom, we had a birthday lunch for my 10 year old grandson in the only Ice cream parlour still open at the beach before hot footing it to our caravan.
To check on it as we hadn’t been for 6 weeks
Yep the heating still wasn’t working, so had to wait for our plumber who could only come on Tuesday..the day everything closed and home we came.

So, yes we got a bit of freedom unlike Spain and Tenerife, who went deeper and deeper into the more.
Had we stayed and some friends did as they couldn’t get a flight back to the IOM that trip to the wet fish supermarket would most likely have been curtailed as the Spanish authorities got harsher and you could only use the nearest one to you, which was the one below the apartment and not as well stocked.

What they did to children was inhumane. Dogs were treated better

We are due back in Oct but Are waiting a while before booking a flight till we see how it goes.

All in all, I’m glad we came home.

Drivingdownthe101 · 16/06/2020 11:46

@Laniakea yes one thing this whole debacle has taught us is that we certainly need more education in this country, not less Grin

Orangeblossom78 · 16/06/2020 11:51

You see that puts me off going abroad - sounds awful Dowser glad you got home OK - they seem all keen to have visitors but also quick to lock them up etc. I don't trust Spain /Italy after their strict lockdowns anymore.

Dowser · 16/06/2020 11:53

More= mire

Happy birthday Cru
Luckily you saved it until things had eased a bit 😂

My dh, sil and dd all had birthdays in April. We went to a country park for Dh’s birthday on the 13 th and had a nice walk in 7 degree heat / cold..but it did us good..and we’d had a quick trip to m and s where I got him To choose a bottle of whiskey.
I think dd and sil got takeaways , there’s a good one up the coast you can call ahead and collect, so that was their little celebration..but on their own this year. They live in a very dense housing street so I think they were more worried about upsetting the neighbours.

I’m stuck at the end of a 4 bungalow cul de sac , so more easy for people to snuck in and out ..it’s not quite been Piccadilly central, but it’s been lovely to see everyone.

Drivingdownthe101 · 16/06/2020 11:55

Happy birthday Cru!

Dowser · 16/06/2020 12:01

Orange blossom
Tenerife people are lovely, although there are many from the mainland working there.
We said goodbye On Saturday to the waiter at our fave fish restaurant and he just looked tearful...no one knew what was happening at that point..and of course Spain pulls the strings.

My russian friends were incarcerated in their apartments, no dog, so no exercise. Only one in a car, she has glaucoma so couldn’t drive and only one in a supermarket

They got really tough, once we’d gone home.

HesterShaw1 · 16/06/2020 12:01

Happy birthday Cru

I have to say my birthday back in the first week of insanity was THE most miserable of my life. All on my own, no presents and no phone calls and no work even. So much so, it got to 4pm and I simply erased it. It's now happening in August when the boyfriend has his. This has the welcome side effect of making me 5 months younger, and a Virgo rather than an Aries. Aries is just too bad tempered and shouty.

My bad tempered shoutiness is absolutely due to my star sign and not my personality.

Spudlet · 16/06/2020 12:04

What Spain did to their children was just horrendous. Especially when you consider how common it is to live in apartments over there!

I fear they will be seeing the repercussions for years to come, although I hope not. The health effects - mental, emotional and physical - have the potential to be huge. Sad

iamapixie · 16/06/2020 12:07

@Laniakea
Yes, it really has shown how badly educated people are. I had a pretty poor education and have no confidence that I know much at all about anything, so I really don't want to be patronising, but oh dear the level of science-illiteracy, understanding of basic maths and statistics, and comprehension skills is absolutely shocking.

DisobedientHamster · 16/06/2020 12:11

Happy Birthday, Cru!

Am in Scotland but ready to go and 'risk my life' to go to a shop.

Nihiloxica · 16/06/2020 12:14

What Spain did to their children was just horrendous.

Dreadful.

Every time I hear "We should have locked down harder" I hear a person advocating for children being treated worse than dogs.

Our lockdown was plenty hard enough. The fact that children were allowed out for a Bastard Walk is not the reason our death rate is high (although it is not especially high compared with neighbours who locked down harder and far less hard). Harshness of lockdown doesn't correlate well with favourable outcomes.

Bollss · 16/06/2020 12:14

I still don't understand the point of why they locked kids inside tbh. Horrific!

HesterShaw1 · 16/06/2020 12:20

Me neither.

And you get that oft trotted out stereotype of how the Spanish really know how to treat children, and that they are human beings allowed to eat in restaurants, with everyone smiling indulgently at them etc

Well apparently not :(

Remember those photos of their little faces staring sadly out of windows? Horrible.

Nihiloxica · 16/06/2020 12:20

At that point in time there was a worldwide arms race to prove your country's value according to how "hard and fast" you locked down.

China (a military dictatorship) was the model to emulate.

I was so, SO glad (and still am) to live in a country that did not rush to lock down.

It is to the UK's immense credit that it did not.

And Sweden's refusal to play that ridiculous game saved so many from harm in other countries.

As soon as they knew there would be an EU comparator that hadn't locked down, governments knew that they would find it so much more difficult to excuse all their actions by pointing to the lives they had supposedly saved by their firm and fast action.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 16/06/2020 12:22

Found you! DD had a good friend over yesterday. Mum was stuck and had to go into work. Girls are 11 in yr 6 and her employer thought she should be left at home.

She had a lovely day at our house 😁

DrearyWallAntler · 16/06/2020 12:30

I think there will be sub 200 deaths reported today.

Anything sub 150 and this has descended into pure farce.

BarkandCheese · 16/06/2020 12:31

I took DH with me to the supermarket today so have no doubt murdered a suburb at least. He’s planning on baking and had a laundry list of ingredients to buy which I didn’t want to be responsible for finding or getting wrong so he had to come.

Spudlet · 16/06/2020 12:34

I’m actively planning to visit two supermarkets today - Tesco to collect the groceries but also Sainsbury’s to try and get some jam sugar, to use the glut of strawberries our garden is providing.

Prepare for a swathe of death in the East Anglian area. 🧟‍♀️

LivinLaVidaLoki · 16/06/2020 12:36

That's so weird, I just had that exact same thought......
MorrisZapp · 16/06/2020 12:38

Some people here in Scotland think that when Primark opens next Wednesday, there will be scenes of great carnage, clothes strewn on the floor, and stressed out staff sobbing with trauma.

But they are wrong.

Because I can't get there until Thursday.

HesterShaw1 · 16/06/2020 12:38

This is such a good point. I hadn't thought about it in those terms before.

Thank you Sweden.

Remember Matt Wanksock threatening to take away the freedom to exercise if we didn't obey? This was fairly early on. Thank god someone in SAGE told him that would be a very bad idea.

Lickyicelollies · 16/06/2020 12:39

Checking in on the new thread and pleased to report that I have successfully escaped Scotland and am now in England! Woo hoo! Very quiet on the M6 at Gretna and not a police car in sight, long may it continue.
