Puzzle hunt help

My work have sent out another puzzle hunt for us to have a go at during lockdown (if we want to obvs). There are 5 stages and you need a password to get onto the next stage.

The first stage is 27 pictures of landmarks - I think i've managed to identify all of them but haven't got a clue as to how to work out the password :(

All of the pictures are bordered by colours (green, red, orange, yellow or blue) so I think that may have something to do with it?

Anyhoo, any ideas welcome as I'm stumped!

I'll try and put pics of the landmarks on here. These are what I think they are:

leaning tower of piza
eiffel tower
hagia sophia
burj khalifa
gateway arch
sydney opera house
petra
pantheon
machu pitchu
st basils cathedral
space needle
cn tower
one world trade centre
potala palace
colloseum
brandenburg gate
dome of the rock
forbidden city
pentagon
flatiron building
angkor wat
winter palace
shard
taj mahal
rialto bridge
griffith observatory
brooklyn bridge

Have you tried the first letter of all of them? It’s not a real word but could still be the password.

If it’s something to do with the colours that would be weird because you wouldn’t need to know the answers to get to the next stage...

Hmm I love stuff like this! Grin

pinkazing · 15/06/2020 16:38

Could the colour differentiate a word as in all the red ones first letter make a word etc?

ApocalypseNowt · 15/06/2020 16:39

Just tried first letters no joy :(

I thought maybe if I sorted the buildings into the colour groups a word or name would miraculously reveal itself but it hasn't as yet....

Colour groups for info in case this helps!

I love a puzzle! Is there any kind of prompt when you're asked to enter your password or is it literally "enter password"? Is it on a website?

ApocalypseNowt · 15/06/2020 19:05

It's an excel spreadsheet. Only info i have is that passwords must be entered all lowercase with no spaces. Other 'tips' we've been given:

  • Puzzles typically read from left to right, top to bottom, but not always
  • As you start to solve puzzles, reflect on your approach as it could be useful further down the line
  • Where specific articles are referenced, "The" is typically excluded from the start of answers
  • If you can't figure out how to access the next stage it might be that you haven't fully completed the previous puzzles
  • You'll need a password to open each of the further stages. All passwords should be entered in lower case, with no spaces.

How about rearranging the first letters of the countries they’re in? Perhaps different words for each colour.

Pineappleunder · 15/06/2020 19:08

Green could be lgbt+

ApocalypseNowt · 15/06/2020 19:26

Good idea! I'm away from my laptop now but will give it a go later Smile

@ApocalypseNowt - Would it be possible to send the puzzle to me?
I'd like to have a go at it myself Smile

DebbieFiderer · 15/06/2020 20:40

It looks like something is written underneath each one but I can't see it properly - numbers? Is that just how manyetters in each word?

Winecheesesleep · 15/06/2020 21:51

@DebbieFiderer I think it's the number of letters in the name as you say.

DebbieFiderer · 15/06/2020 21:52

I'd be interested to check if they all match up correctly, could be a clue there if there is a discrepancy

ApocalypseNowt · 16/06/2020 07:56

Debbie yes it's the number of letters in the name, like in a crossword clue.

pinkazing · 16/06/2020 08:23

Last letters, maybe?

SoosanCarter · 16/06/2020 08:27

Five colours for five continents?

ApocalypseNowt · 16/06/2020 09:34

I've tried last letters - no joy.

I thought about continents but the groups don't seem to match up with that?

OP posts:
SoosanCarter · 16/06/2020 15:43

Colours according to the centuries in which they were built?

SingleHandSue · 16/06/2020 17:51

Any luck yet @ApocalypseNowt ?

ApocalypseNowt · 16/06/2020 17:55

Unfortunately not. I'm well and truly stumped!

I have a spreadsheet with the answers written in all sorts of orders and can't see anything resembling a password! I'm siting I'm missing something that is right in front of my face Angry

I am keeping on with it though, I'm the sort that can't leave stuff like this unfinished!

OP posts:
CloudyVanilla · 16/06/2020 18:06

Is it possible that one of each category all match up, e.g. a place from every category is in the same country or something similar?

And then maybe there is an odd on out? I find it interesting that all categories except yellow have 5 places :O

EggysMom · 16/06/2020 18:11

I always thought it was the leaning tower of pisa (s rather than z), has that changed or do you have a typo?

ApocalypseNowt · 16/06/2020 19:09

Sorry, yes Piza is a typo.

I was wondering about an odd one out but can't think which one it would be.

Usually you have to solve the puzzle and after that you can see what the answer's going to be but I just can't see how I get a word or a phrase out of a list of landmarks!

AAAARGH

OP posts:
RamblingFar · 16/06/2020 19:22

There's one ruined one in each set?

In rainbow colour order:
angkor wat
colloseum
petra
pantheon
machu pitchu

But I can't get it to spell anything?
