Foods you’ve never tried .... Silly lighthearted thread!

Recently I happened to mention to a colleague the fact I’d never tried Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. He seemed totally amazed and I felt like a bit of a weirdo, more than normal anyway! So I promptly went out the next day and bought some and loved the two flavours I tried, I am a new convert and will be trying all the other flavours now, bang goes the diet!
So it got me thinking about other foods and drinks I’ve never tried that are pretty mainstream but I’ve never had. Some examples:

  • Tea and coffee - Yes I know! But i’m not keen on hot drinks and just couldn’t bring myself to try drinking them.
  • Olives - Strange as I like olive oil but just never thought of trying actual olives!
  • Squid and that kind of thing - Just can’t even think about eating this!
  • Fresh tomatoes - I just don’t like the smell and look of them! I’m perfectly fine with cooked tomatoes in a pasta sauce or tomato purée on a pizza base and that kind of thing.

How about you? Am I the only one who has led a somewhat sheltered life in more ways than one?!

@SpillTheTeaa

Duck. Can't bring myself to try it 🤢
You are missing a real treat, duck is one of my favourite meats. The breasts are superb pan-fried, with the fat slowly rendered out of the skin until it’s crispy, and then roasted until cooked medium & pink in the middle. The legs are best served as confit, slowly braised in duck fat until they are almost falling off the bone, then given a quick blast in a hot oven to make the skin crispy. 😋

@geojojo

I'm shocked you've not tried those things op. I understand if you don't like them but aren't you at all curious? Just a sip of coffee or one olive? Then again I sadly can't imagine life without coffee! I have tried most things as really love food but was a vegetarian from birth until fairly recently so there are a few meat type things I haven't tried - pheasant, venison, snails, black pudding, haggis, offal. I don't think I will be branching out to be honest, I'm still a bit put off by lots of meats.
@geojojo - I can understand your surprise at my not trying some of the mainstream things I’ve listed! I’ve often thought I should try tea and coffee just once so I can tick it off the list but strangely I just can’t bring myself to try them! With olives I would like to try one and I plan to do so soon!

And thanks to everyone for all your posts. It’s clear that the smell, look and texture of foods really plays a big part. I think also memories from when I was young. I can always remember my Mum cooking liver and onions and the smell was so strong, it filled the whole house!
