Foods you’ve never tried .... Silly lighthearted thread!

Recently I happened to mention to a colleague the fact I’d never tried Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. He seemed totally amazed and I felt like a bit of a weirdo, more than normal anyway! So I promptly went out the next day and bought some and loved the two flavours I tried, I am a new convert and will be trying all the other flavours now, bang goes the diet!
So it got me thinking about other foods and drinks I’ve never tried that are pretty mainstream but I’ve never had. Some examples:

  • Tea and coffee - Yes I know! But i’m not keen on hot drinks and just couldn’t bring myself to try drinking them.
  • Olives - Strange as I like olive oil but just never thought of trying actual olives!
  • Squid and that kind of thing - Just can’t even think about eating this!
  • Fresh tomatoes - I just don’t like the smell and look of them! I’m perfectly fine with cooked tomatoes in a pasta sauce or tomato purée on a pizza base and that kind of thing.

How about you? Am I the only one who has led a somewhat sheltered life in more ways than one?!

I'm a try everything sort of person too, think I've probably tried everything except frogs legs but that's only because they didn't have any where I stayed in France.
But I have eaten (some unknowingly until after I'd eaten it) Cobra, escargot, horse, reindeer, wild boar, sheep eyes, alligator. I don't think there's anything on the lists above that I haven't tried.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 13/06/2020 22:37

Kebab
KFC, although I did have fried chicken in America.
Jellied eels
Snails
Frogs legs
Tripe
Oysters
Sushi
Black pudding

Geekster1963 · 13/06/2020 22:39

Black pudding never wanted to try it, knowing what it’s made of. DH and DD like it but I can’t bear the thought of eating it.

I'm pretty adventurous.

Never tried oysters but I would. Ditto goat.
Never tried tripe because it smells vile.
Never tried foi gras because the way it's produced disgusts me.

UnfinishedSymphon · 13/06/2020 22:48

Cheese cold, I can eat it on pizza, in sauces etc but present me with a piece of cold cheese and I will vomit on you

Mumintherain · 13/06/2020 22:48

I have never had tinned soup, it just seems really gross to me... also corned beef... same. And pickled eggs, for me they look like those animals or brains kept in jars in science labs. Will never try them.

WinWinnieTheWay · 14/06/2020 00:02

@Mumintherain pickled eggs look like the most disgusting thing on earth.

Wheresmrlion · 14/06/2020 00:40

I studied biology and overthink things.

So I couldn’t ever eat shellfish because most are filter feeders so in my head they eat sewage and why would you want to eat other people’s poo particles?

Kidneys and liver, kidneys are full of wee and liver filters stuff from blood so is full of god knows what. Sweet breads make hormones for whatever animal they come from.

Why on earth would you want to eat any of them?!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 14/06/2020 01:57

Tripe
Brains
Oysters
[basically slimy shit)

I'll eat most things. Had snake, escargot, some really weird things when living in Borneo that I've never figured out what they were, insects etc

However, if you're ever in France: do not have andouillette sausage! It's made of pig intestines and little else and it is disgusting! I nearly vomited Envy

Nellydean21 · 14/06/2020 02:14

Absolutely nothing dead. I will try anything but draw the line at living things. It's a delicacy in Japan. To eat sentient beings while alive.
I grew up on a farm and have traveled a lot and will eat anything given to me out of courtesy.

Sunnytimesahead · 14/06/2020 03:36

So many posts, I’ve found this thread really interesting, thanks everyone.

Along with many other poster’s I’ve never tried these things either:

Tripe - Just couldn’t, the smell and the look alone are vom inducing!
Kidneys, livers and hearts - Just seems all kind of wrong to me but each to their own.
Pickled eggs and gherkins - Couldn’t face them.
Beetroot - Smell and look.
Black pudding and haggis - Ick, ick ick!
Kebabs - Never ever thought of trying one.
Sushi, frogs legs and jellied eels - Just no!
Rabbit & Veal - just the thought of it.

I’m sure there are loads more I could add!

The foods listed are some of my favourite things, except tripe, which is terrible. The dog loves it though.
I haven't tried any vegan substitutes for anything except almond milk, I like that.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 14/06/2020 07:15

Just to point out humans generally eat bleached tripe (🤢🤢) - please don't feed this to your dogs, they need at au natural!

So many things I've not tried, mostly already listed, I'm ok with that

SiaPR · 14/06/2020 07:19

I have tried tripe and did not like the smell, but I really want to try it again, but only Latin American or Spanish. I think they could make it taste good.

Soubriquet · 14/06/2020 07:28

Lots of food I haven’t tried

Would be easier to tell you foods I do eat!! (I have a medical food problem)

SpillTheTeaa · 14/06/2020 07:38

Duck. Can't bring myself to try it 🤢

chocolateequinox · 14/06/2020 07:47

Beetroot
Radishes
Piccalilli
Tripe, offal etc

MeAgain2020 · 14/06/2020 07:50

Reading other people's answers, just realised I've never tried pickled eggs!
I'm half tempted, but don't know why- I don't even like boiled eggs!!! Maybe I'll leave it on my list of things I've never tried.... 😂

Bakedpotatoandgin · 14/06/2020 07:50

I second what PP said about andouillette sausage, it smells of literal shit.
I've never had a kebab or a KFC, I'm not vegetarian it just doesn't appeal. Never had swizzels sweets, the smell makes me feel sick. Also never had oysters or lobster, although I would love to try them and I've had various other seafood.

KatherineJaneway · 14/06/2020 07:55

Nando's
KFC
Tripe

geojojo · 14/06/2020 07:58

I'm shocked you've not tried those things op. I understand if you don't like them but aren't you at all curious? Just a sip of coffee or one olive? Then again I sadly can't imagine life without coffee! I have tried most things as really love food but was a vegetarian from birth until fairly recently so there are a few meat type things I haven't tried - pheasant, venison, snails, black pudding, haggis, offal. I don't think I will be branching out to be honest, I'm still a bit put off by lots of meats.

ttigerlilly · 14/06/2020 08:09

I haven't tried a lot of meaty stuff. Pate, liver, steak and kidney pie, black pudding, doner kebab, and those peperami things.

I'm not a fussy eater at all other than the fact I can't touch meat, it repulses me for ethical reasons. I've been vegetarian for a few years and try to eat as plant based as possible.

jay55 · 14/06/2020 08:11

I love oysters.

I've a nut allergy so never had marzipan, Christmas cake, macarons etc

I hate warm milk so never eat any custard based desserts, can't bring myself to try creme brûlée or panacotta.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/06/2020 08:43

You haven’t missed anything with oysters - I’ve had them more than once but IMO they’re vastly overrrated. (Might be a lot nicer cooked.). There was evidently a good reason why in Dickens’ day they were seen as poor people’s food.

I’ve never tried snails - can’t fancy them at all.

HazelBite · 14/06/2020 08:47

Artichokes, I wouldn't know where to begin!
KFC the smell outside the shops turns my stomach
Oysters It looks like snot
Picalili looks vile
There are a lot of curries that I am put off purely because of the smell.

I am allergic to onions so that limits my diet somewhat
