We were planning a cottage in Wales this summer but booked Devon instead (although I’m not sure we’ll be any more welcome there Grin). DH is Welsh although has no family living there now bar a great uncle in Glyn Derw and we usually go over the border a lot.

Orangeblossom78 · 13/06/2020 09:27

You could have his mum and one other for witnesses and then have a party after perhaps if you wanted to Anxious Elephant. Depending on how long you wanted to wait. I do recommend it though, cost about £50

HesterShaw1 · 13/06/2020 09:29

I'm about to have my FOURTH period of lockdown 🤬🤬🤬😡😡😠😤😤👿 This is Unacceptable, but may well explain my doom laden Weltschmerz of the last few days, and the dissolving into snotty tears when DP and I had a small misunderstanding yesterday.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 13/06/2020 09:29

I agree about the avoidance of Scotland and Wales. We have a cancelled center parcs holiday so were thinking of hiring a cottage somewhere instead at the end of summer. I has thought of the Welsh coast but I'm not going to go anywhere that's still screaming "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!" at me everytime I want to buy an ice-cream.

AnxiousElephant77 · 13/06/2020 09:29

No, no, no

I've waited 8 years for this wedding and goddamnit it will be the wedding I want.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 13/06/2020 09:30

Can I also have a small whinge at the amount my laundry has gone up now that ds cannot wear the same clothes twice at school (previously he would at least get a couple of days out of his jeans/trousers).
Sorry!

bakingcupcakes · 13/06/2020 09:32

@Orangeblossom78

AnxiousElephant we 'eloped' (after having two DC and living together for years) and got married with no family just two witnesses, it was fab. Really recommend it. It was lovely and cheap too!
My aunty did that. Just had my mum and my other aunt as witnesses and went for lunch after. They'd been together about 20 years.
AnxiousElephant77 · 13/06/2020 09:33

This is all I do.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 13/06/2020 09:35

@Loki honestly I can see myself just lying. Yes, yes, it's definitely all been washed and dried overnight. Honest guv.

A couple of years ago there were teachers giving interviews to the BBC about how their schools were buying washing machines and tumble dryers to clean the clothes of their pupils who were living in poverty, because the kids were in dirty uniforms and parents couldn't afford to run the washing machine, or, over winter, have the heating on long enough to dry the clothes. Where is the concern for those pupils now? Where is the planning to ensure they can still access a desperately needed school place under these new rules? Oh yes, it's disappeared up the arsehole of the Covid God.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 13/06/2020 09:35

Honestly if I didn’t live here I wouldn’t come but I’ve not actually had anyone freak about 2m and I’m out every day. I wouldn’t be here because we’re meant to stay local and there’s so little to do. It’s not going to be a great holiday. I’m in Cardiff though and tourist areas may be very different (I’m not allowed near them either)!

Where is the concern for those pupils now?

I've seen a couple of requests from a local nursery for spare clothes for this exact reason Sad

Honestly I'm the least maternal mother ever but it makes me want to scoop them up all and take them home with me.

Bollss · 13/06/2020 09:39

(not that I think this is lack of care from their parents for all of them. I know it's not.)

rookiemere · 13/06/2020 09:40

Yes for the holidays. I'm looking for a backup plan as Edinburgh- Majorca 1st August seems a bit optimistic now ( booked with changed Easyjet flights so we'll just move them again). It will be interesting to see what happens if English flights are allowed to go but not Scottish-although I'm not sure if that's devolved or not.

Anyway there were some gorgeous and well priced properties in Wales, but as I have no idea if we'll be allowed to go there or travel more than 5 miles if we do ( at least Scotland has made a concerted- if tardy- move to give an opening date) I don't look at the Welsh ones.

Nihiloxica · 13/06/2020 09:41

I don't think 'we' should rush to denounce scientists as a group though (we, meaning society as a whole - the women on this thread are far too sensible!) I fear that when if it does turn out the Imperial model was bullshit and it comes to light, there will be such appalled outrage, that mistrust of science will get even worse than it is already. What's really at fault is government and press interpretation and presentation of "science", which is not a set of answers.

I totally agree.

It's important that scientists can make recommendations based on what the believe will happen, free from fear about the personal consequences to them if they are wrong.

I think the problem with Ferguson is a pattern of headline grabbing "worst case scenarios" where he courts the press and builds his own reputation on saving the world from dangers he essentially made up.

It literally is Lisa Simpson's Tiger Rock with him. The fact that he has done it so many times now is worth paying attention to.

Why are this white man's models preferred over the less dramatic models of Sunetra Gupta at Oxford? 🤔

The incentives for scientists to over-egg predictions are pretty clear.

But it is the politicians that have the responsibility for choosing policy. The idea that they should do nothing but follow "the" science is anathema in a democracy.

I've noticed no difference in laundry as DS never made it to the magical stage of let's wear this again it's not dirty. School had abolished uniform temporarily to ensure children wear different clean clothes every day in their plan to re-open that's still not happening.

Work have also abolished uniform for the same reason as they can't afford to buy us enough to wear different every day. There's also been lots of complaints that thanks to lockdown we're all now fatter and less able to fit in our original uniforms. Not by the bosses just by us in group chats. Clearly it would be totally inappropriate for your management to complain about your weight! Grin

PickAChew · 13/06/2020 09:42

I'll stick with markses for clothes shopping in person, from now on. No one looks at you twice if you check a garment label, in there. Better if I could look it up online but the building is a giant Faraday cage.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 13/06/2020 09:46

Sadly I struck Marks off my list when they refused to change their policy on letting men in the women's changing room if they fancied it.

Drivingdownthe101 · 13/06/2020 09:46

Ours are in uniform and we haven’t been asked for a clean set every day (mine do anyway as they’re filthy little blighters). With a fairly high number of FSM children I suspect they know they wouldn’t be able to enforce clean clothes every day.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 13/06/2020 09:48

Just seen an article about UK tourism and how many places are hoping for a staycation boom this summer.
I know its petty and I live in a seaside town and so I know how important tourism is to the local economy but part of my just thinks "fuck off". Why would I want to spend my time and money somewhere that's been treating any kind of visitor as some kind of horrible disease spreading monster, screaming at us to get off their beaches and out of their parks lest we give them all the plague.

bakingcupcakes · 13/06/2020 09:48

Me and DS went through all the sales clothes in matalan yesterday and I held them up against him like I usually would.

In the queue for m&s I saw a gorgeous little girls rain mac. It was yellow with clear pockets that had daisy's on them. It really was lovely. There's always much nicer clothes for girls. I think I'd be broke by now if I'd had a daughter.

rookiemere · 13/06/2020 09:49

Sirsamuel no changing rooms atm in M&S although obviously the ethical problem still remains.

I have two daughters... I’m skint. I also have a toddler son, and clothes for him are so full and functional in comparison.
PickAChew · 13/06/2020 09:52

I do most of my food shopping there, anyhow, @SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito

Our laundry has been out of control since the weather turned. The boys produce a lot, anyhow. Ds2 can get through several pairs of joggers a day.all needing a thorough wash. Only he refuses to allow the washing machine to be switched on and our dryer is on its last legs.

Orangeblossom78 · 13/06/2020 09:54

Pupils returning to classrooms in Edinburgh and Aberdeen will attend school for one week in three under plans to resume conventional teaching.

I’m going to Cornwall in July and am dreading it a bit. It’s awful how scared of each other we’re getting. I’m far more frightened of society now than coronavirus.
