Shit... what have I just found?

Name changed so as not to link to other threads.

Just been tidying up while DP is at work. Went to tidy his latest bank statement into the paperwork file. I always put his paperwork away for him, but don't normally read it, I don't know what prompted me to read it today.

There are loads of transactions for apple.com/bill

Multiple transactions per day, ranging from £0.99 to £19.99. I added them up and it comes to over £700 in the last month, which seems like a crazy amount of money.

What is this? App purchases? Gambling? Is there anything legitimate that this could be?

I feel bad for having looked, it's none of my business, we have separate finances, but what if it's a problem?

We each pay some bills (nothing in joint names) but I'm due to start maternity leave in the next couple of days, I can't afford to cover 'his' bills if something odd is going on.

Any ideas? Please tell me there is a reasonable explanation.

I'm very into an online game and sometimes make in app purchases. This thread made me feel guilty and go to review my spending - for this month it added up to £7.82. I think I'll let myself off!

NB they do appear exactly as OP says Apple.com/Bill then 0.99 etc

JWrecks · 10/06/2020 17:21

I'm shocked people pay this much for game add ons.

A lot of them, even the big popular ones, are surprisingly deceptive about in app purchases.

They often don't tell/warn you the actual price when you purchase something, because seeing that number would make you think about the money you're spending! Simply tapping some cute blue egg instantly charges you £5, and the app's job is to distract you from thinking about how quickly those little innocuous taps can add up to hundreds or thousands. That's half of how things like this happen.

It's horrible and it shouldn't be allowed imo, but at the same time, players need to MAKE themselves think about each little tap, because allowing yourself to stop thinking about your real money is the other half of how things like this happen.

@OP Show the bill to your DP asap. I imagine he'll have an "oh shit" moment and change the way he plays those games. Good luck to you!

Standrewsschool · 10/06/2020 17:24

Good luck with your talk tonight. £1700 is a lot of money wasted, and more than many people’s mortgage/rent.

JacobReesMogadishu · 10/06/2020 17:35

He must know about it. He will have noticed £1700 in 2 months!

Rubyroost · 10/06/2020 17:37

I'd be seething

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 10/06/2020 17:52

Dh plays an online game where the packs range between those 2 figures. He's never spent anything like that but he plays with people who clearly spend a fortune.

Clymene · 10/06/2020 18:15

@FlamingoAndJohn - that's what my post meant - if you use Apple pay, it registers as a purchase to the card /shop that you spent the money in, not Apple.

'Those are in app purchases' means that the charges showing on the statement are things bought in app, not bought in actual shops using a phone.

FlamingoAndJohn · 10/06/2020 18:17

Sorry, @Clymene, I realised that after I hit post.

Clymene · 10/06/2020 18:31

FilledSoda · 10/06/2020 18:35

You seem reluctant to ask him , but why wouldn't you ?
You weren't snooping .

Littlebyerockerboo · 10/06/2020 18:40
**@MagnoliaJustice* my head went straight to that as well - @MaudG* webcam girls and dirty chatroom type apps where you have to pay to see girls do stuff. That's the only way I envisage a man spending £1700 on itunes to be honest.

Sorry OP but do bear this in mind in case he tries to brush you off or make you believe something else. Whatever he claims it is I'd want to see proof of it as quite frankly him spending this much money behind your back (joint finances or not, doesnt matter) would affect my trust of him.
I was another who wondered about webcam girls and chatroom stuff, in app purchases are how some of these sex websites make money, i was surprised that it wasn't mentioned earlier than all the gaming app guesses, webcam work can add up very quickly, due to getting more/what you've requested.. obviously its a thing, otherwise these girls wouldn't make money...
I would find that more plausible than in app gaming, however clearly I am not a gamer and didn't realise that people actually spend that kind of money on games.

Really hope there's a real good reason for the spending op, finding these things are such a shock.

Please let us know how you get on, and good luck x x

MondeoFan · 10/06/2020 18:40

I'm kinda hoping he has been hacked and doesn't have a gambling problem for your sake op

FATEdestiny · 10/06/2020 18:49

What game does he play @NameChange73939399?

birthdaybelle · 10/06/2020 19:00

Thing is a lot of us boak at £700 (that's double my month spending allowance. But we don't know OPs financial situation

Becca19962014 · 10/06/2020 19:43

£700 could easily just be a couple of packs. Shown as special offers in games. It's far to easy to just click and purchase them especially now some devices actually ask people to put in their credit card details and store them.

It's very unlikely to be literal gambling apps as they are no longer allowed to be played via credit cards, though of course this might be a debit card in which case it could be that.

I'm more inclined to think it's gaming from what the op has said. Though obviously i don't know.

GoldenZigZag · 10/06/2020 20:13

I'd be gutted if my DP was spending that amount on games Shock

Romanticrights · 10/06/2020 20:56

@userxx definitely!

Walkerbean16 · 10/06/2020 21:00

I'd guess at gambling.

hope you are ok OP

Louise000000 · 10/06/2020 21:05

Hope your chat has gone OK with him and hope everything is out in the open now Flowers

Bluebooby · 10/06/2020 21:08

Sounds like a mobile game to me op. You'd be surprised how much people spend on them. I think they're like slot machines for some people

Tentatively · 10/06/2020 21:16

Which game does he play? I hope you have some answers now and there is a simple explanation.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 10/06/2020 21:17

He really needs help if he's spending that amount on gaming. Hope the conversation goes well tonight.

Russell19 · 10/06/2020 21:22

Definitely sounds like purchases from a game.

Splitsunrise · 10/06/2020 21:26

Sorry OP. Does sound like in app purchases. Hope the talk tonight goes ok

schoolsoutforcovid · 10/06/2020 21:27

I never spent a penny on candy crush but I'm tight Grin
