Shit... what have I just found?

Name changed so as not to link to other threads.

Just been tidying up while DP is at work. Went to tidy his latest bank statement into the paperwork file. I always put his paperwork away for him, but don't normally read it, I don't know what prompted me to read it today.

There are loads of transactions for apple.com/bill

Multiple transactions per day, ranging from £0.99 to £19.99. I added them up and it comes to over £700 in the last month, which seems like a crazy amount of money.

What is this? App purchases? Gambling? Is there anything legitimate that this could be?

I feel bad for having looked, it's none of my business, we have separate finances, but what if it's a problem?

We each pay some bills (nothing in joint names) but I'm due to start maternity leave in the next couple of days, I can't afford to cover 'his' bills if something odd is going on.

Any ideas? Please tell me there is a reasonable explanation.

In App purchases I'd recon

Wigglegiggle0520 · 10/06/2020 13:06

Do you know his Apple log in? You can probably check.

LovingLen · 10/06/2020 13:06

Had he actually read it, he could have been hacked

NetballHoop · 10/06/2020 13:07

Does he use his phone to pay in shops/public transport etc? It all adds up quite quickly.

Tableclothing · 10/06/2020 13:07

Could be he's a victim of credit card fraud. The twat who stole my money pissed away most of it in the Apple store.

Romanticrights · 10/06/2020 13:07

Could it be music? iTunes singles or albums?

userxx · 10/06/2020 13:09

£700 ???? Jesus that's a lot of money! Is he always on his phone playing games?

ShouldWeChangeTheBulb · 10/06/2020 13:10

I’d let him know quickly that sounds like he’s been hacked.

userxx · 10/06/2020 13:10

@Romanticrights Spotify would be £690 cheaper!

Clymene · 10/06/2020 13:10

If you use your phone to pay in shops it uses the card registered. Those are in app purchases

Raella50 · 10/06/2020 13:10

Is that him using his Apple Pay on his iPhone? That could just be him using his card for daily purchases of anything at all.

TreeTopTim · 10/06/2020 13:10

None of us can tell you because it could be anything from in-game apps, Apple pay, account has been hacked or he has a gambling problem. You will need to ask him.

userxx · 10/06/2020 13:11

Apple pay uses the card registered to it. I don't think there is a seperate statement.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/06/2020 13:12

Definetly raise it with him. If you normally file his paperwork then there is nothing to be ashamed about saying that these just glared out at you as possible fraud.

GreenTulips · 10/06/2020 13:12

Some apps have automatic subscriptions

I downloaded a free app for it to say 3 days free than £15 per week!

You need to check the subscriptions linked to Apple Pay and delete his card from the phone

Ernieshere · 10/06/2020 13:13

Are they always ending in 99p?

If so maybe its not used in grocery shop?

Lampan · 10/06/2020 13:13

It’s not Apple Pay.
If I look at my card statement it doesn’t differentiate between paying with my phone or paying with my card.

KingOfDogShite · 10/06/2020 13:14

Why wouldn’t you ask him first? How would anyone on mumsnet know?

NameChange73939399 · 10/06/2020 13:14

@Wigglegiggle0520 no I just tried that but can't remember the password for his appleID

@LovingLen I'm not sure. It was unopened on the side for a day or two and then I passed it to him and said 'you've got a letter' as I wasn't sure if he had seen it. He did open it, but I don't know if he read it properly.

@NetballHoop I've never seen him pay with his phone, but I suppose it's possible (I'm desperate for this to have a legitimate explanation). The amounts are quite 'regular' though, all 0.99 / 4.99 / 9.99 / 19.99

I should approach him about this shouldn't I? In case it's fraud? But I shouldn't have read it.

It will be in app purchases. I have a friend who did the same (she stopped when she added it up one month). He’s probably got himself into one of those games and you just keep buying the packs and buying the packs... giveaway is that the amounts all end in .99. If it was gambling it would be round numbers - no one ever puts £9.99 on a horse!

Apple Pay uses the bank card, it shows on you bank statement as if you used your actual card.

IndieRo · 10/06/2020 13:16

He could have been hacked. Happened to me, started with taking 99cent, then 3 euro, then 10 and 45, all in the matter of 2 days.

Obviouspretzel · 10/06/2020 13:17

Probably in app purchases. Not sure what you are thinking it could be. Gambling wouldn’t be on the App Store.

NameChange73939399 · 10/06/2020 13:17

@userxx there is one game that he plays a lot

OP posts:
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/06/2020 13:17

Go back and look at previous months.

AreYouLocal2 · 10/06/2020 13:18

Might be App purchases for games. For example on Sims one can spend money to speed up actions on the game. A lot of apps are initially free, but then pull you in by requiring the purchaser to spend money to continue playing.
