Maybe her hands have fallen off. Actually, are they supposed to be lizards or something equally inexplicable? I think I've figured it out! Must be because her human hands are being repaired; usual repair shop was shut due to lockdown.

I’m only kidding. I really can’t see any big scandal here.

Perhaps there was some "wrong" with her hands in the photo - she moved them so they were blurred, an insect/ butterfly was between her and the camera, she had a massive sparkly ring on that caused a weird splodge of light? There are loads of things that could result in the need to touch up that area of the picture.

But where's the handbag, was she mugged?

I think it was probably in all other ways the best photograph but the hands weren't right so they edited it. Why all the conspiracies saying he's died? They would say so, death dates are legally documented and publicly accessible so they'd look a bit silly if someone later looked at the tweet and realised he was dead at the time 🙄

It's a bloomin weird photo with poor lighting taking from a weird angle, but the only thing I think which has been photo shopped is her hand.

As pp said, perhaps she was having a bad day with bruising.

Hand aside, I can't think why they couldn't get a better photo though.

Very likely, at 99 I can’t imagine PP has much time for faffing around for photos.

I think he can't go out as he's too ill so it had to be faked. So is there a law that he has to have his photo taken when standing outside? Or you know if he isn't well enough to stand outside they could just have taken a photo of them sitting down inside?

Prince Philip has been declared dead at least six times a year on MN for some years.

Would there really be any reaction is there wasn't a published photo? I doubt it.

99 year old man is frail and/or unwell - that is normal! The only thought would be sympathy for queen and him

Even if he is ill I’m sure they could have had a photo of him sitting down, he’s 99, it’s not out of the question that a 99 year old would have mobility problems. It does look like they have been photoshopped and added to the background. —by an amateur—

He must be Very I’ll if they have released this monstrosity. Although tan older photo would have been better. Maybe what a previous poster mentioned is true, maybe he has spent the whole of lockdown swooshing round the estate in silk pjs, and the queen has just been slobbing on the sofa in her comfies. BP probably don’t have a current photo of them without his silky pjs and her egg stained T-shirt.

That would require a conspiracy of silence involving a large number of people. That's not going to work but you do raise an interesting question about what would happen if anyone who would in normal times have had a state funeral dies during the crisis

DH (professional photographer) knows who took the picture. Can confirm both were present and in Windsor. He then mumbled some technical terms about backlit and flash

This isn't soviet era Russia - if he had died they would announce it. There are a couple of options for a funeral - just have a quiet family funeral and that's that, have a quiet family funeral now and a memorial type public event later or even hold off any funeral until the lockdown has eased sufficiently - bodies remain unburied for significant periods in some circumstances - there isn't a need to get them in the ground immediately thanks to modern techniques.

I don't think it's photoshopped, it looks like they've been lit very strongly and the flash is causing that shadow behind her hands.

But people do love a conspiracy theory...

I took a photo of DH at a wedding years ago, background a famous University college green and quadrangle.

Looks TOTALLY fake. But I took the bloody thing! Something to do with the light I think, makes his outline look really sharp. Weird.
