He retired from public life some time ago, so no they don't do engagements together. And since he has not been seen for some time, my guess is that he is in very poor health and is being cared for at Windsor .

If he'd died there would be no point in concealing it - the people hardly need protecting from the knowledge that a 99 year old man has passed away .

Phillip hasn't done any engagements for years now. He retired, only appears at weddings and such. He lives on the Sandringham estate full time while the Queen is normally either at B Palace or Windsor during her working year.

He has lived at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate since he retired from public life. I think they actually announced that, but if they didn’t it’s always been common knowledge. In normal times the Queen shuttles between Buckingham Palace during the week and Windsor at weekends, as she has always done, apart from the set periods she spends at Sandringham (Xmas & Jan), Balmoral (Summer) and Windsor (Easter and Ascot week). The Queen is a creature of habit think ).

I'd hate to think that people would discus my 99 year old grandfather, the way people do on MN. "I thought he was already dead" ...."Maybe he is dead and they are concealing it ". Really ? So disrespectful to speak of any elderly person like that.

I don't know why people assume he's dead anyway. It's no secret his health is failing as he's ended up in hospital almost every winter for the last few years but why would they hide it? It would get leaked anyway.
I think when he does go the Queen might not live much longer. I think despite them not spending much time together that they really do love each other and he supported her a lot especially in the early years.
The fact he chose to travel so they could be together says something . Not sure many 98 year olds would have enough energy.

I think he can't go out as he's too ill so it had to be faked.

Philip is 99 and he has cancer. There is a potential he wasn’t up for getting dressed up for a photo. Which is fair enough.

I really wish folks would stop the macabre he’s dead she’s dead thing, if either of them were dead they would announce it ffs. Not everything is a massive conspiracy.

The comments on Twitter are horrible. He's 99. He's unwell, and a grandfather and great-grandfather. How do people expect him to look? Horrible.

Such a shame that for an occasion such as a 99th birthday, the picture isn't one of them sitting perhaps in deckchair, or by the fire, in some degree of comfort.

Always so formal. The more relaxed informal pics are so much better.

I think it's the lighting that has made people think the background isn't real but it is. The hands look strange but I don't think it is a faked photo.

Why would they bother to hide it if he had died? He's 99, so we're hardly going to be shocked! And obviously his body could be stored for months if a funeral's not possible right now - only the family would be upset/inconvenienced by that, and they'd already know if he were dead.

The theory is that it's so he can have a state funeral. Which is also why lockdown in England is being lifted so quickly.

I also heard that he moved to Windsor so they could lockdown together.
Not the greatest photo, but I think it's the genuine article.
Still think that he looks amazing for his age. All credit to him, one of the really genuine members of the RF.
