@ThatLibraryMiss I’m so pleased for you!
It was my mum’s 60th in early lockdown, which was pretty miserable for her as she lives alone. My DD’s made her some vouchers, one of which was ‘100 hugs’. I know my mum will be delighted to cash them in!

Drivingdownthe101 · 10/06/2020 18:07

Domina keep posting, you’re a beacon of sanity on here Flowers

HesterShaw1 · 10/06/2020 18:07

I am one of the people the new ruling will benefit hugely - after spending lockdown alone and nearly losing in the the early weeks because of loneliness before we decided to sod it. The fact that I am now allowed state sanctioned hugs and affection from my family and my boyfriend is a deep relief on one hand, but also completely ludicrous.

AnxiousElephant77 · 10/06/2020 18:08

Ugh have you seen what Whitty's comments tonight. We are not at the end of the pandemic, we are in the middle of it.

HOW?? HOW IS THIS EVEN A THING?? What is he talking about???

AnxiousElephant77 · 10/06/2020 18:08

Apologies for the terrible grammar, my fury got the better of me.

InterGalacticPenguin · 10/06/2020 18:09

@HesterShaw1

I'm in tourism and there have been lots of emails flying around from the tourist board asking us to contribute to surveys about how a reduction from 2m to 1m will help save our businesses. I answered, currently I can operate at 1/3 capacity. If it's reduced to 1m I will be able to operate almost as normal for the summer and therefore cost the government a lot less money and be able to contribute a lot more tax.

I'm certain the economic argument will win out, and this will have a beneficial effect on family, education and social lives.

I am really hoping that this means hotels will open as well.

Our business relies entirely on the hotel industry and the thought of them being closed for the next few months literally fills me with fear. I am waking in the night in a cold sweat about it. Sad

Bollss · 10/06/2020 18:10

Stick with us @DominaShantotto I know how you feel you're not on your own Flowers

And for those that the bubble is helping!! Woooooohooo!! Grin

I'm trying to stay positive. Small steps in the right direction.

Oh and Chris witty can get fucked making comments like that!

bakingcupcakes · 10/06/2020 18:11

@Dowser Eventually sanity will prevail. This isn't a permanent state of affairs (it just feels like it) and sooner or later everything on your list will become possible again. Except you'll have to find a new hairdresser but that can be achieved too. I left a lovely hairdresser when I relocated and the replacement one is just as good if not better. It'll all come right in the end.

AnxiousElephant77 · 10/06/2020 18:11

It was the 'let me be very clear' and 'not by a long shot' that made me angry. There's no need to use that kind of language. It's a disgrace.

InterGalacticPenguin · 10/06/2020 18:12

@Drivingdownthe101

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH SCHOOL DEMENTORS. Note to self.
I nearly posted a comment asking if those teachers who refused to go back would be put on reduced pay or competency measures. Grin

I can't watch the briefings or news anymore because of this type of language. I psyche myself up to read it once a day instead and pick the rest of the info up from here.
AnxiousElephant77 · 10/06/2020 18:15

It's all so contradictory, relaxing the measures on one hand, and that kind of bullshit on the other. What are we supposed to believe? And now can we be in the middle of it? In the middle of what! The middle of our lives being ruined??

Ah, I'm sorry. I've had enough.

Bollss · 10/06/2020 18:17

I guess that's the psychological warfare coming into play.

You can do these new things but BREAK THE RULES AND YOU WILL DIE.

someone put that man back in his box.

NothingIsWrong · 10/06/2020 18:18

@DominaShantotto keep going lovely. I've been there - smiling on the outside for the kids, and inside being very close to breaking. I nearly walked out the house today and I wouldn't have stopped either. We can support you here.

Laniakea · 10/06/2020 18:18

""It is only by breaking the links between households... that we can take these slow, steady steps forward," he says"

^actually Chris Witty you don't get to 'break links between households" and to suggest that it is acceptable or desirable for a government to do so is inhumane. Whatevs. I think they've entirely lost control now - every man for himself.

He came across as borderline furious tonight, it made me sad that this is what we've got leading/guiding us at the moment.

Anyone wavering in the on the precipice of anxiety or depression were royally being shoved over the edge this evening. Bubbles aside.

Malteserdiet · 10/06/2020 18:21

I am getting so angry they wont put more research into the possibility that covid arrived here last year. If found to be the case then surely we can all go straight back to normal since we’ve clearly passed the second wave and that’s with living life completely as normal for all of the winter months with the virus spreading around unchecked between December and February.

Many of my family were really ill with covid symptoms in December and it started with my Aunt who lives in the same village as my parents. My aunt works as a matron in a boarding house and she “nursed” a Chinese pupil who had returned unwell from WUHAN at the end of November. My Aunt then became very ill with covid symptoms and went to her GP who diagnosed her with pneumonia. Luckily she is in her 50’s with no underlying health conditions so after being quite ill for some time she did recover without needing hospital. On her way to the GP she called into my parent’s house and subsequently they became extremely ill about ten days later. My DM has just had an antibody test and we are hoping it can be proved that she did have it. She has not been ill since and so if she does have the antibodies I will be convinced she had it in December and I will email every bloody scientist I can find until one of them listens. Then hopefully we can get back to normal (not the ‘new’ normal) and this crap can all be over!

Laniakea · 10/06/2020 18:22

and to think people used to accuse BoJo of having libertarian tendencies ... ha!

justasking111 · 10/06/2020 18:23

I think the government v science thing means they are both simmering with resentment. Bojo quotes following the science but does not blindly follow it.

Librarybooksandacoconut · 10/06/2020 18:23

Chris Whitty has absolutely no ability to empathise, he thinks purely on scientific terms. I remember the very first ‘public’ question that was asked was from a grandmother asking when she could hug her grandchildren. Whitty’s answer was purely along the lines of what risk group she was in (with no actual answer even then), no attempt whatsoever to empathise with how difficult the situation might be for her.

Has your dm bought her own antibody test?

I'm on the verge of buying some and paying the extra for someone to come out and do a blood draw.

RubberDinghyRapids · 10/06/2020 18:26

@DominaShantotto Stick with us, we'll get through this debacle. Thanks

Came on just to say how pleased I am for people who have been on their own. Finally some recognition for them.

And I have sacked my fucking patronus. He used to be reassuring and now he's doomsaying. Need a new one now. Fuck's sake.

Bollss · 10/06/2020 18:27

You can't blindly follow the science can you I mean, the easiest way to get rid of this virus would be to lock everyone in their own homes for a month. But in reality that would kill more people and be inhumane.... But it would get rid of the virus.

There has to be a balance doesn't there.

Chris witty strikes me as a Sheldon cooper type. Very intelligent but would I let him dictate how to live my life? No. Because that would be batshit.

Malteserdiet · 10/06/2020 18:28

@Thighmageddon
No my DM is a midwife and just had the test yesterday at work. Two weeks until the result!

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 10/06/2020 18:29

We are here for you if your struggling. I’ve been saved by you when I felt so alone. Reach out and let’s keep perspective, celebrate good news and pick each other up.
