I blame Twitter.

Or is that Frivolous?

Nihiloxica · 09/06/2020 14:06

The fucking R number can fuck off unless someone is going to show me how it is calculated.

As far as I can see it is now just a piece of superstition - the Chief Medicine Man announces what it is and the foolish tribes people cower in fear and continue in their incarceration.

DominaShantotto · 09/06/2020 14:08

I felt normal - opened twitter and got greeted with "people saying kids mental health is affected by not being in school are lying".

I seriously cannot take much more of this shit.

sunlightflower · 09/06/2020 14:08

Oh wow, I love this thread! It's wonderful to find some sane people who feel the same as me. I've uncovered a few of them in real life too, and not necessarily the ones I'd expect either. I'm surprised by how many of the people I thought were 'normal' are out there bleaching their fruit.

Sorry if this has been covered and I've missed it, but if the WHO are now saying that asymptomatic transmission is extremely rare, why do we still have to wear face masks?!

Thighmageddon · 09/06/2020 14:08

Oh yes, the path widening.

On our local Spotted everyone is yelling about making the entire town car free, even people with blue badges.

Why, just why. It would stop an awful lot of elderly/disabled people being able to park outside a shop and spend some time out of the house.

I swear half the people where I live were born without any resources to use critical thinking.

PickAChew · 09/06/2020 14:13

One of the main roads in is. They're asking people to stay away, Dowser.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/06/2020 14:17

Twitter sounds awful. I think things are changing on here a bit, the going back to work and schools threads, the playgrounds one. Hopefully. People seem to be looking at the bigger picture more.

TeacupDrama · 09/06/2020 14:18

Interesting stasitic regarding flu etc In UK the normal annual deaths from seasonal flu and pneumonia is 28,000 it affects mostly the vulnerable and elderly.

28,000 /365=76

So once daily deaths are on average at or below 76 we are at normal levels of deaths from flu etc remembering that on average 1687 people die every day from all causes

Orangeblossom78 · 09/06/2020 14:19

To be fair, some of the tiny roads here could do with widening a bit for the ones in wheelchairs and mobility scooters, perhaps...I wonder when / if we will get the massive groups of bus tours back. I don't miss that to be honest

Allflightscancelled · 09/06/2020 14:22

THere's a new post on BBC health pages claiming that lockdown has saved 'millions of lives across Europe'.

Then it goes on to say this about the research and the researchers:

"Their equations made several assumptions, which will affect the figures*

No shit Hmm

AnxiousElephant77 · 09/06/2020 14:24

I've muted so many people on Twitter that my timeline is so short there's barely any point in bothering going on!

BogRollBOGOF · 09/06/2020 14:25

I've just had a meltdown that's been brewing for days, the final straw being the 1pm news about plans for the return to school being dropped. I had woken up to read it on my phone which got the day off to a bad start, but hearing it on Radio 2is so much more official. And I cried. Proper big ugly crying. DH came down and we've been upstairs crying it out and talking for the last hour..

It is a bit easier for him as he gets more interactions with people from work over the phone, plus the DCs being around means that his social tank is not as empty as mine. Best chat we've had in weeks as we've retreated into our own bubbles a bit. We're not a live in each other's pockets couple. It's reassuring that we came back off honeymoon still married after 3.5 months travelling, but there was a lot more stimulus and we made it a point to make the most of other company in places like the hostels.

I have outwardly said that it hurts now because I no longer believe in lockdown, we are so far removed from where we were in March/ April and it no longer justifies the costs and my patience and self motivation are gone. He hadn't connected the irony that soon I will be able to take the children to a beer garden when it's still too dangerous to attend school.

I haven't really got the upset out of my system yet, byt it's good to be letting it out.

Dowser · 09/06/2020 14:25

Pickachew..that must be the one past bedburn..that is the main road.
We went in down the wrong road the first time..single track, steep no passing places , the one with the ford at the bottom
Don’t want to do that again
I was anxious all the time, till I’d turned round and climbed back up to it...like 10 minutes after we’d arrived
Thank goodness we found the right road.
That’s Dh and his bloody google maps, it’s had us in some right scrapes..the chalk way for example.

Oh for Christ sake
He’s just asked me if he should open a new bar of dark toblerone (We have two ) or have Some of the bar that I opened yesterday.

I can’t believe, I answered, for fucks sake man, just dive in.

Not nice and not usually how I speak to my lovely husband.
I need help!

bluetongue · 09/06/2020 14:27

I love reading all the posts here.

Do you know what is happening on the weekend in the Australian city I live in? Spectators will be allowed to go to a football game. Imagine that, people allowed to have an enjoyable outing. Sure, it’s only 2000 people and the stadium holds 50,000 but it’s a start.

Public opinion here has really turned re the restrictions after our black lives matter rallies. Authorities reluctantly allowed them and of course now everyone is questioning why children can’t play some sports and there can only be 20 people at a wedding. Some states have extremely low numbers (0 active cases where live) so the case for really relaxing restrictions is pretty strong.

Still, we have our own issues here. Restrictions are state based and most states have closed their borders against the wishes of the prime minister which has led to lots of tension. We’re also banned from leaving the country unless given an exemption.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/06/2020 14:28

I never did Twitter. I'm not a following celebrities type person, and no one I ever asked about what Twitter does ever managed to sell the point of it to me.

Dowser · 09/06/2020 14:29

Oh bog roll
Good for you for crying it out
I’m a big believer in that.
Sometimes you’ve just got to have that release.

Allflightscancelled · 09/06/2020 14:31

Oh wait, I should have read more carefully. It's a team from Imperial, presumably trying to bolster the shit show that is Prof Neil Ferguson. Starts to make more sense now.

Beth Rigby from Sky asked a good question yesterday. She asked at what point would the government consider a trade off between Covid and the economy. At what point do deaths and infections become an acceptable level we learn to live with to be able to restart things.

Matt Wanksock looked so affronted. He swore down there would be no trade off.

I kind of get the feeling that other cabinet members have other opinions on this though and he may end up losing.

He now just comes across as the kid at the party who doesn't want the party to end.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 09/06/2020 14:35

I've contacted UsforThem to see if I can help at all. I've no idea how I can help but I wanted to offer. I hope DD can see I've tried if she ever asks me. I don't tell her my thoughts as she's only 8 and she's got enough stuff to deal with but as she gets older she might have questions about this time and what I did. I want to be able tell her I tried to resist because I could feel the impact on her and her voice is important to me.

Dowser · 09/06/2020 14:35

Good to have you on board blue tongue
And very interesting what you have to say about the football
2000 in a 50,000 capacity is not normal..1 seat in 25 ..that’s not very generous

The players are hardly going to be able to hear
‘Howay the lads!’

No I don’t tweet, bog roll
Fb and mumsnet are enough for me to juggle.
We’ve just had a laugh over my outburst over the chocolate , he’s a good egg.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 09/06/2020 14:37

@BogRollBOGOF
I have to admit I lost it and cried this morning too.

And DH just doesn't seem to get it, but then he gets to go to his office 3 days a week and have actual conversations with actual people. Aside from you on this thread here and skype for work, and texts Ive had no meaningful contact with anyone outside of my home in 12 weeks, and its so hard. I think this is underestimated a LOT.

People assume that because we have the technology to communicate then we are OK. But I don't want a zoom....I want a hug from my sister in law, I want a cup of tea and cake with my friend, I want to have actual contact with people.

Dowser · 09/06/2020 14:39

Livin

He now just comes across as the kid at the party who doesn't want the party to end.
There’s always a chuckle on this thread.
Dh loves his daily snippets. He even knows who I am on here, but he’s been warned..if he goes snooping..he’s out!😡

enjoyingSun · 09/06/2020 14:39

She asked at what point would the government consider a trade off between Covid and the economy. At what point do deaths and infections become an acceptable level we learn to live with to be able to restart things.

Questions like this were asked quite a bit by press at the start of lock down they said they were very aware of the Treasury had groups looking at this - because there would be a tipping point.

It's very like how we shut down to protect NHS and now seem to be waiting for no virus threat.

It's quite scary how the narrative can shift almost without comment.

bluetongue · 09/06/2020 14:43

Well no, it’s not a normal crowd at the football but it’s better than completely empty. Plus, these supporters can be REALLY loud Grin The interesting test will be if it rains during the game as forecast. Are security or Police going to force them to stay in their socially distant seat and get wet or will they be allowed to sit undercover?

If you ask me the ‘follow the science’ has gone too far here as well. My whole state hasn’t had any community transmission for nearly 50 days and we have Police patrolling the borders. I see no reason why we can’t just drop all social distancing like New Zealand has.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 09/06/2020 14:44

Thanks @Dowser I always try and make light of it where I can.

That's just the impression I get of him, that he stamps his little feet and shouts "NO WE NEED TO BE AT 2m", "NO THERE WILL BE NO TRADE OFF"

Meanwhile Boris and all are reviewing the 2m rule and I can bet anything they will be opening up the economy quite quickly now.

I swear to god every time he turns to leave that podium I expect to see a "Kick me" sign.
