I thought Anne Frank is more like we now know who would tell on Anne Frank the same ones that report people 1.95metres apart or have gone shopping twice or saw their mother and father and sister, with Dementors Anne Frank would have been betrayed much sooner

Libertarians seek to maximize political freedom and autonomy, emphasizing freedom of choice, voluntary association and individual judgment. Libertarians share a skepticism of authority and state power, but they diverge on the scope of their opposition to existing economic and political systems. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism

Yes.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/06/2020 14:55

BBC seems to be glorifying doctors who are (in it's own words) middle aged, a bit overweight...with asthma- who feel it is their duty to work with virus patients Hmm hope this does not make others feel they can't have choice if they are high risk. Same with BAME doctors.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 05/06/2020 14:55

I'm definitely a libertarian now then!

SockYarn · 05/06/2020 14:56

A lot of libertarians also believe that the state should only provide the bare minimum of services and that instead of paying tax, we keep the money to choose how to spend it.

A bit radical for many.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/06/2020 14:56

Also don't forget the War / Blitz

Orangeblossom78 · 05/06/2020 14:58

Alex was aware of the risk he was taking, being older and male (and a bit overweight), but it didn't stop him. "You've just got to get on and do what you've got to do," he says.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/06/2020 14:59

No, you don't - it is not OK to say this as they should be able to have a choice. Sorry, made me quite cross.

Springersrock · 05/06/2020 15:00

Afternoon.

Just checking into the new thread

I’ve been dementor free mostly today, mad busy at work and everyone is pretty smiley and happy.

Logged on MN for 5 minutes with a cup of tea and wish I hadn’t

BakewellTarts · 05/06/2020 15:06

@SockYarn maybe I'm libertarian light then as I do believe in the welfare state and am happy to pay taxes to support it. I just hate this current authoritarian micromanagement world we are currently in.

Cattermole · 05/06/2020 15:07

@Orangeblossom78 - the GP I fell out with on FB is a bit chubby and asthmatic (and middle-aged) but "he fully expected to get it, on the front line".
What with our 0.4% rate of infection and the lowest death rate since March and all that. Like the bloody Bronx here it is....

MaudesMum · 05/06/2020 15:10

The excellent More Or Less is on Radio 4 at 4.30 - always worth listening to for an objective and analytical review of statistics around CV!

enjoyingSun · 05/06/2020 15:11

@Orangeblossom78

The issue is with the masks that no-one seems to be mentioning is that studies have shown when people wear them they can stop doing other stuff, they can lead to a false sense of security. Also they can cause problems with people taking them on and off touching their face etc
I think if we went back to the old coughs and sneezes spread diseases so catch your's in a handkerchief then they wouldn't covey any benefit.

All the basily do is stop sneezes and cough droplets spreading as far so I can see train carrage and buses it being necessary - as traveling public can IME be extremely unhygienic.

On plus side went for local walk today and no face masks at all and no-one jumping into bushes and roads to avoid passing us.

BarkandCheese · 05/06/2020 15:29

It funny to read everyone here talking about libertarians, I was honestly thinking yesterday that’s exactly what I was turning into as I got older, but minus the really extreme bits about tax and welfare state.

Allflightscancelled · 05/06/2020 15:34

According to the Telegraph today, France has said that even if there is a second wave they won't reintroduce lockdown. And they say the virus is still circulating 'but slowly' and they now have about 1,000 new cases a day.

Same as us, apparently. And yet here we still are.

Cattermole · 05/06/2020 15:40

Oh wait, it's a Friday afternoon so the R number's gone up just a little bit. Just enough to make people panic sufficient to behave, you think?

Trying to dissuade people from gathering in other people’s houses over the wet weekend, probably.
Mascotte · 05/06/2020 15:44

Should we set up a new Socialist Libertarian Party?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/06/2020 15:45

Hurrah, a zoo thread!

BarkandCheese · 05/06/2020 15:46

I’m obviously a bit thick, but how can the R rate go up when the infection rate is going down?

BakewellTarts · 05/06/2020 15:47

I work with numbers and I am very puzzled by this too.

Bollss · 05/06/2020 15:49

@fartingsparkles nothing to lose really!

Allflightscancelled · 05/06/2020 15:51

The R number's gone up a bit

Agreed it's a message timed to keep us cowering in our place. The utter bastards.

As if they can even tell. As if there's a pattern to be discerned from it in any case. And as if it would make any difference at all even if it had gone up Hmm.

I'm probably the least aggressive person you could ever meet, but I'm getting to a point where I could do violent things to Chris Whitty and his joyless cronies.

fartingsparkles · 05/06/2020 15:56

@Bark I wondered that too. Its all over my fb that the r rating has increased in our area. Well actually, has it? We are classed as NW but that's a very big area, with many diverse communities. Where we live is probably not that reflective of what might be going on in Manchester for example, which may be very different again to Cumbria. Wish I could find a more localised version. Also, how up to date is it? Not long back we were being told it was backdated by about 2 weeks iirr.

This may out me to anyone on my fb, but I just had a bit of rant about the Daily Mirror reporting that there were 141 hospital deaths 'in the past 24 hours'. Yes they actually put that down. (They have update their info now, but I screenshotted it) I couldn't believe it when I read it. Factually incorrect, and so bloody irresponsible! And I know we all know how the stats work but how many people are still saying "xxx died yesterday". This fear mongering 'journalism' exacerbates the misunderstanding.

BakewellTarts · 05/06/2020 15:57

The problem is ridiculous things like this undermine the credibility of the whole thing (as if there was any left now anyway) and just make me want to roll my eyes and do what I think is right.
