What the hell just happened to my window?

I've name changed in case the neighbours recognise my pile of crap garden.

I was playing with DS while DH made the dinner when I heard a thud from the kitchen, I assumed DH had dropped something. DH starts saying "what just happened" so we went through to the kitchen.

My kitchen window looks like it's been shot. DH didn't see anything hit it and has been out to look for anything that might be lying around. Can't see anything. Luckily it's only through one pane of glass and it's on the outside as I really can't afford a new window.

Excuse the mess, it needs taken to the tip when they start accepting bigger things. But can anyone solve the mystery? Is it just an old crappy window

It’s illegal to discharge any firearm within 50m of a road, public footpath or bridle path.

If it’s an air gun you can illegally adjust them to fire the pellets further.

Tiredmumssquad · 05/06/2020 06:55

@windowmystery I thought this was larkhall by looking at the houses opposite..

duvetstealer · 05/06/2020 07:19

There is a lot of incorrect information here about airguns. It's only illegal 50ft from the center of a highway if they are being a nuisance, it is however illegal for a pellet to leave your boundary. The air rifle that's hit that is fairly low powered as it's only gone through one pane. Also You won't find a pellet with a magnet as they are lead or zinc.
Pellets commonly come in 4 sizes .177 (4.5mm.) .20(5mm) .22(5.5mm) and .25(6mm) other sizes are available but rare. Judging from the height of your fence and the proximity of the surrounding houses some scrot has done this on purpose and I'd place money on it being from an upstairs window of the houses opposite

Definitely a pellet shot.

Some cunt is firing out windows in your neighbourhood Angry
Pellets can blind people/children and injure pets.
It'll be someone fairly nearby - keep an eye out

Agree with this

Rebelwithallthecause · 05/06/2020 09:52

Definitely bb or pellet gun

What sicko is aiming at your window?!

Rebelwithallthecause · 05/06/2020 09:52

I would report to non emergency police in case others have had it happen to them too

Rebelwithallthecause · 05/06/2020 09:54

Just as any reassurance - a replacement pane of glass won’t be expensive

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/06/2020 09:57

Every police force has a firearms Sargent.

midnightstar66 · 05/06/2020 09:57

This happened to my friends the other week, apparently it's fairly common and often the result of a tiny hairline crack or the frame adjusting slightly to temperature change

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/06/2020 09:57

Sorry, I’d google to find them because they won’t like someone firing weapons at houses.

Jeremyironsnothing · 05/06/2020 10:00

Yes warn a many people as you can. Local facebook page?

LucyTrainsDragons · 05/06/2020 10:03

That’s awful OP!

Does look like someone was aiming for your cat!

Can you install cctv?

Nicolastuffedone · 05/06/2020 10:06

When my window cracked due to a tiny crack (something that had happened when the window was put in, cracked years later) the entire outside shattered into thousands of pieces....stayed intact in the frame, but didn’t look like that.

endofthelinefinally · 05/06/2020 10:08

Air rifle or BB gun.
Catapult would be a bigger, irregular shaped hole. ( voice of experience)

FredaFrogspawn · 05/06/2020 10:15

I would speak to other neighbours. If there are a few with shot marks the police will have to take it seriously.

crazychemist · 05/06/2020 10:42

You really can't always tell with these things. We had an upstairs window spontaneously crack last summer. At first glance I assumed it was a bird or similar. But it was the INSIDE panel of a double-glazed window. Nobody was in the house but me when it happened, and I was downstairs and just heard an odd noise. Window man said that sometimes happens - houses do gradually shift over time and with different weather, which can put strain on windows and sometimes a pane will spontaneously crack.

If, however, it is happening at more than one house/more than one window, it's probably kids with stones/bb gun. All I'm saying is don't immediately jump to conclusions.

BlueJava · 05/06/2020 10:58

If you find the pellet mark where it fell and photograph. This could indicate the direction that it came from. For example looking in from outside, if pellet is on the left hand side, it may indicate it was from the house/road at your back to the right.

windowmystery · 05/06/2020 15:35

We can't find the pellet but there's others very near me with the same thing so I'm pretty confident it not just a rubbish window. I put it on local Facebook and spoke to my immediate neighbours so people know to keep an eye out. Especially if they're targeting pets.
