What the hell just happened to my window?

I've name changed in case the neighbours recognise my pile of crap garden.

I was playing with DS while DH made the dinner when I heard a thud from the kitchen, I assumed DH had dropped something. DH starts saying "what just happened" so we went through to the kitchen.

My kitchen window looks like it's been shot. DH didn't see anything hit it and has been out to look for anything that might be lying around. Can't see anything. Luckily it's only through one pane of glass and it's on the outside as I really can't afford a new window.

Excuse the mess, it needs taken to the tip when they start accepting bigger things. But can anyone solve the mystery? Is it just an old crappy window

What the hell just happened to my window?

Definitely gin and sadly most likely aiming for your cat.
Personally I would inform the police.

windowmystery · 04/06/2020 19:41

@Esspee thank you, that's really good to know. I'm back at work soon after mat leave so I'll have a bit more cash going about.

Gun not gin.

Airgun. Report to police, it's illegal without a licence(well it is in Scotland which you are by the looks of the sky)!

windowmystery · 04/06/2020 19:43

If I can find the pellet and be sure it was a gun I'll call 101 later on to log it.

Or catapult. My bathroom window was done with them - I found the lumps of rock on the patio.

Mysterian · 04/06/2020 19:45

I'd say pellet gun, though it is the season for birds. Lots of young ones learning to fly.

windowmystery · 04/06/2020 19:46

@TARSCOUT yes I am in Scotland, it's not been the nicest day. I didn't know that so thank you.
DH has come up with a very plausible theory re: cat. She has a doppelgänger who seems to be wandering about here most of the time. We think maybe she was being targeted for her look-a-likes transgression?

The cracks surrounding the round dent in the middle looks like it’s from a pellet gun to me, if it was caused by changing pressure I don’t think it would cause that dent in the centre??

Pr1mr0se · 04/06/2020 19:49

Could be any of the above. Your cat looks unbothered though (and lovely).

SeaToSki · 04/06/2020 19:49

Try looking directly across the room from the window and see if there is a lump of something embedded in anything.... shot pellet. You might have to guess on the angle of impact

windowmystery · 04/06/2020 19:54

It didn't make it all the way through so it might have fallen into the garden. DH is going for a rummage after dinner.

Footywife · 04/06/2020 19:55

Definitely looks like an air pistol or a BB gun

Smallsteps88 · 04/06/2020 19:57

There may also be some other marks on the wall or window frame from other shots that weren’t as accurate. Or even on the outside of your fence.

Pavlova31 · 04/06/2020 19:57

I have had some air gun pellet hits to windows when a neighbour owned one and liked to practice target shooting at boards in his back garden and often missing Hmm
Got used to the thud on the glass but never found a pellet embedded .
Luckily he soon got bored and stopped.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 04/06/2020 19:59

Would your insurance cover a replacement window?

hadtojoin · 04/06/2020 20:03

I have one almost identical in my top kitchen window. I know that was an airgun pellet as it was an accidental rebound from my sons target practice against a metal target. and YES.... he did own up..
The two main sizes of pellet are . 177 (4.5mm) or . 22 (5.5mm) If the hole is a lot larger than that it could be a ball bearing from a catapult. The pellet could be in the cavity between the two pieces of glass.

hadtojoin · 04/06/2020 20:07

DH has just told me that BB pellrts are 6mm so could also be a BB gun.

DamnYankee · 04/06/2020 20:11

Voting for cherub with pellet gun as the likely culprit.
Does kitty typically sit there and watch the world go by?

windowmystery · 04/06/2020 20:13

About 5/6mm looks about right.

@DamnYankee yes sadly she does, she likes to threaten the birds.

This is awful, thank god your cat wasn’t hurt! I would report it to the police too. Awful.

FlamingoAndJohn · 04/06/2020 20:16

I thought BB guns were illegal these days.

aFaintSeashellAroma · 04/06/2020 20:33

Someone has tried to shoot your cat.
This happened to me too. Looked exactly as yours does . Exactly. Turned out to be an air rifle. I’d keep your cat in a while and call the police. Police never found a pellet or bullet for us , but there was video proof it was a gun. Ours also only doe one pane. Bullet was not between panes either.
Don’t wait to call police. Very Bloody dangerous if it hits a person and will kill an animal.
If actually be interested in what part of scotland your in incase it’s the same.
pm me if you prefer

GreyGardens88 · 04/06/2020 20:39

@Elsiebear90

It’s probably a BB gun or air rifle, I used to live behind a really rough block of flats and would frequently hear gun shots (don’t think it was illegal guns as never anything in the news, but air rifles maybe), one day our neighbours window got shot and looked just like that.
That sounds terrifying, these things can kill you if they strike in a certain spot
windowmystery · 04/06/2020 20:39

I'm central Scotland. My cats are indoor anyway so not at any additional risk. DH is having a look outside and as soon as he's in we'll report. It's
