Been crazy at work today. Ill catch up with the thread in a mo.
One of our papers here is reporting the highest spike in deaths in two weeks today. 215.
It was 412 last week. 363 the week before, 494 before that and 649 the previous week.
Seriously how can people report such factually inaccurate shite?

Spudlet · 03/06/2020 19:24

I went onto the schools thread. And then I left and now I am going to have a quiet sit down in a dark room Confused

I can’t fathom the glee that some people are feeling over this. I mean ok, some people clearly believe that what is being done is right and they’re entitled to that opinion. But the gloating pleasure some are taking in knowing how much damage this is doing to children is just unfathomable.

Dowser · 03/06/2020 19:25

@SockYarn

People who make passive aggressive comments about how we should be relishing this time with our precious children should be taken out and publicly flogged.

Grrr.

Not wanting to put the boot into teachers but I fail to understand how my 10 year old grandson received no work from school in ten weeks.

They did a cracking little project with them on the Black Death just before lockdown, that I helped him with
We could have done one a fortnight.
I used to be a teacher many moons ago, I quite enjoyed researching with him.
Now, that is a missed opportunity
Why didn’t I offer you might think
Well yesterday was the first time I’d seen him so wasn’t aware that he school were giving him anything educational

AgentCooper · 03/06/2020 19:27

Well, I went over to my mum and dad’s today for the first time since 22 March. It was the first time my 2 year old had been in a car since then (I don’t drive but DH does) and he was so excited. He can be a grump and very, very clingy to me but he was overjoyed to see his granny, grandad and auntie (DSis was there too). He sat for ages on his grandad’s knee reading stories.

I can’t tell anyone about this IRL but in any case none of us are seeing other folk so we’re happy to be a wee bubble. I’ve really been struggling with anxiety and intrusive thoughts these past few days (could be tiredness due to DS waking so, so early, hormones or indeed just shitey lockdown) and for a wee while, sat out in the garden shooting the breeze with my sister, I actually felt ok. I don’t think I realised how lonely I had been.

Dowser · 03/06/2020 19:30

Also very, very sad about the zoos.
Haven’t been to Chester or twycross but would love to
Let’s hope there’s a petition to reopen them soon
Took my grandson to Edinburgh for his birthday about 5 years ago and saw the pandas and they were moving around and awake which was rare.
( I bet it was this time of the year, as it was freezing and it’s his birthday today. There we were trying to eat burgers up that hill, with fingers that were like icicles)

Weedsnseeds1 · 03/06/2020 19:36

I have to go to Wales for 2 days to work in a couple of weeks time, including an overnight stay. Should be a little adventure 😁

BarkandCheese · 03/06/2020 19:40

@AnotherEmma

Does anyone know of any good sources of statistics that actually break down numbers of cases/deaths in care homes v hospitals v elsewhere?

Given that all the statistics are being lumped in together, and lots of deaths are being recorded as Covid even without symptoms or a positive test (or with underlying health conditions as the predominant factor), I am extremely skeptical about the statistics being used to justify continued restrictions for the entire population.

OP, unrelated but going back to this:
"When is this site going to join the twentieth century and gift us a preview function?"
I hate to break it to you but there's been a preview function for as long as I can remember Grin The preview button is right next to the post button (on the mobile site anyway) Wink

Yeah, I meant edit not preview Blush

AgentCooper I feel your pain on the early waking. My 16 month old gets up between 4.30am and 5.30am every single day. We’ve tried everything. It’s a killer.

I also would love to see this. I can see how many new cases there were last week in my area (16 out of a population of about 350,000) but can't see how many of those are strolling down the street or shopping in the supermarket vs how many are well away from the public. The important number, to me, is how many I or anyone else is likely to encounter.

GeraltOfRivia · 03/06/2020 19:49

The ONS stats break down covid/non covid deaths by location. But can you trust the recording...

In other news, youngest goes back to school
On Monday. Shorter days and one week on / one off. It's a start though

Dowser · 03/06/2020 19:53

Weeds
Are there any hotels open?

AgentCooper · 03/06/2020 20:00

@Drivingdownthe101 it really sucks, doesn’t it? DH is putting up blackout curtains as I type so hopefully that will help. I really hope it changes for you soon, it’s brutal spending the day feeling like you’re hungover.

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/06/2020 20:03

We have blackout curtains, and a fixed blackout blind, and a gro blind. I really hope it works for you though!
My older two were crap sleepers but had a 7-7 routine (they woke in the night but usually got up for the day at 7). I actually think I preferred the constant night wakings to the ridiculously early starts.

AnotherEmma · 03/06/2020 20:05

@AgentCooper
Lovely to read about your day, sounds like it did you all the world of good Smile

Agent and Driving, about the early wakings, you've probably tried this already but just in case not - give the GroClock a go. It worked a treat for us and I've been evangelical about it ever since!

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/06/2020 20:08

AnotherEmma we have a gro clock. DD1 figured out how to get it down from the shelf and override it when she was 2, it worked for DD2 and DS is too young to give a shit so far! Hopefully soon though...

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 03/06/2020 20:10

Just dropping by with a hug for anyone struggling. This is so difficult in so many ways so I think you're all fabulous for keeping going.

I am getting sucked back into FB and it's dementor central. One woman is CONVINCED there will be a second wave in her area (sw) because of beach-goers. Never mind the very most experty experts aren't CONVINCED but can only make educated guesses at this point and are increasingly saying they aren't sure there will be. She has a science degree too. Another is posting saying if you visit the beach near her you are RESPONSIBLE FOR KILLING EVERYONE THERE. I mean, maybe. But more likely the visitors are coming from London because of where she is and won't be carrying the virus given it's dying out there and they will keep their distance and not be attempting to snog or lick locals. Plus even if lots of them were carrying the virus, it'd only kill the tiniest number anyway, given it's not that lethal. (sorry if that sounds heartless - I am don't relish the idea of anyone dying, it's just the lack of proportion)

I feel like posting a load of shit too and CAPITALISING everything because it's very CATHARTIC. Down with being rational and sticking to the facts, I say. DOWN WITH IT.

I'm sitting here battling wanting to die again today. I'm exhausted. I'd like to not want to die again for a while - even a few days would give me a break. I saw my lovely psychologist and he was so helpful. I am so lucky to know him and I wish everyone struggling had someone that good. He is doing everything he can to get me through this and that counts for a lot. I know I'm in a minority having that support though.

AnotherEmma · 03/06/2020 20:10

You can lock it I think (so they can't override), but I know the most determined kids will just ignore it anyway!

We introduced it when DS was 19 months old - I thought he might be too young but was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked.

So yes hopefully soon for you 🤞

AnotherEmma · 03/06/2020 20:10

Oops cross post, mine was to Driving

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 03/06/2020 20:11

www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-way-covid-deaths-are-being-counted-is-a-national-scandal

I'm amazed by the fact I'm reading the Spectator at the moment, but there you go. This is an actual pathologist expressing concern about our idea of who is dying from COVID.

AnotherEmma · 03/06/2020 20:12

@TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair
A hug right back at you. I'm so glad you have a good psychologist. You need and deserve it. Hang on in there Flowers

SpnBaby1967 · 03/06/2020 20:13

I just feel so lost by it all now tbh.

Every time I think we're making headway I read the BBC articles and the briefing articles and another small part of me does inside. It's all so doom & gloom isnt it.

Where are all these people who are dying from? What is still causing the transmission? Why dont they seem to be saying the POSITIVE effects of releasing lockdown and showing that despite VE day we are on the up. But if you read the news you'd think we were in just as bad a position as we were in March.

Everything is doom and gloom now. Open schools = killing teachers. Open shops = killing people Open activities that kids actually would enjoy =killing grannies

What numbers do we have to have before Boris says "good news everyone, we've done it! Now, let's get our kids back to school and our economy open" without it having a backdrop of "but you'll all die" (and that coming from both government and dementors alike.

I just want some good news!! Sad

RobinHobb · 03/06/2020 20:13

Honestly
I just made a quick visit to the rest of the site. I just don't understand how people spout this factually incorrect bollox.
I heard the oxford vaccine failed; x said there will be no vaccine, the Chinese vaccine did y. Do people not read the news before they spout rubbish?!! I don't expect people to be reading medrxiv every morning but at least get your basic facts right before you open your mouth (or post!) and spew forth.
I find it refreshing that this thread seems to be information sharing and the statistically illiterate (or just the illiterate) aren't frothing here on the basis of figures and facts are JUST PLAIN WRONG
That felt good to get off my chest
Thanks all

Teateaandmoretea · 03/06/2020 20:13

But the gloating pleasure some are taking in knowing how much damage this is doing to children is just unfathomable.

I don’t think so. I think it is driven by people who don’t have children. They are furious that schools are being prioritised over pubs (unlike in Ireland). They couldn’t give a shit about education or anyone but themselves and think the increased R from kids going back is a waste. The people who do have children are shamed then into not sending them back 🤦🏻‍♀️

Dd1 is year 6 by the way, school is now the light in her life.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 03/06/2020 20:15

Omg I’m just so ducking angry today with all this. Dsis is full on dementoring on facebook about the protests in London - why the bollocks shouldn’t they?, DD (who is 19) is being irritating as it’s not bloody normal to spend this much time with parents. DD 2 can’t get her old phone to transfer stuff on to new phone and I can’t bloody take it anywhere to ask for help.

Work are being cowards (school) and hinting that we might stick at one year group plus key worker schools. We’ve also got the start of the ‘I’m too anxious to return’ brigade - that’s going to be a massive issue when works start opening up properly.
I wanted to go to ikea but I’ve seen the queues so that’s off for a bit. Broken plenty of rules this week, thinking of more...

Teateaandmoretea · 03/06/2020 20:16

Everything is doom and gloom now. Open schools = killing teachers. Open shops = killing people Open activities that kids actually would enjoy =killing grannies

The thing that really gets me is the shit about ‘guinea pigs’. When was being locked in a house for 3 months normal? So the effect in relation to that means if you go nowhere you are also an experiment. The whole thing is a fucking experiment 🙄🤔
