My thoughts are with all of you caught up in this school "open-or-not-open-or-maybe-but-in-a-bubble' madness! My youngest is due to start 3rd year at uni in September but her course is almost 80% practical and hands on (Sports Therapy) next year so no idea how they will do that one online. I'm really hoping that all the marking out and taping off etc will be quietly dropped over the next few weeks/months as everyone calms down and stops panicking about catching this virus. Going by the figures, you need to meet 400 people before being in with a chance of catching it then have a 95% chance of surviving. Wish they would push those numbers rather than the deaths.

Willow2017 · 03/06/2020 15:08

TrustTheGeneGenie
Its ridiculous isnt it? Htf fo they think people can go back to work with no childcare? Who the hell even thought that one up never mind how did others not see the fatal flaw in the suggestion?
And as for no Gps allowed to do childcare? Not all GPs are 90yrs old with a dodgy heart ffs! My friend in her 50s regularly does GC childcare for both her adult kids. I would like to see them try and stop her once they get back to work/school. She lives in the middle of nowhere cant imagine the police catching her there!
Makes me laugh, the police will have nothing else to do but follow people with kids in thier cars to see if they all go home or not!

fartingsparkles · 03/06/2020 15:12

After feeling slightly improved, I am back to furious again. What are we coming to when pubs, golf courses and hairdressers are allowed to open but zoos are not? We are fairly local to Chester zoo. 4th largest zoo in the world, does immense amounts for conservation. 128 acres I believe. If you have ever watched The Secret Life of the Zoo you know its massive! It had plans to reopen to a very limited number daily, all had to pre book tickets, no cafes open but you could take a picnic. Nope, not allowed. But whoopdedo, kids let's go to IKEA!!

Bollss · 03/06/2020 15:14

I'm gutted about Chester zoo. It's enormous easily enough room for social distancing. It's insanity that they cannot open.

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/06/2020 15:18

I’m annoyed about zoos too. Our local (Twycross) was all set to reopen and now they can’t. They need £500,000 a month to continue their conservation work, and they could reopen safely very easily.
Feels like another way to keep children out of the public eye.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 03/06/2020 15:19

It really doesn’t make sense that zoos can’t reopen. They must have massive bills and no income. It’s crazy.

Pleasedontdothat · 03/06/2020 15:27

Sky news has an interactive graph where you can check how many new infections there are in your area on a daily basis. Where I am (suburban London) there was 3 new cases in the whole of the borough (population 320,000) in the last WEEK. And yet the local dementors are still frothing that IT’S NOT SAFE .... Hmm

Orangeblossom78 · 03/06/2020 15:28

Just read this Sad

One of the UK's largest zoos is "at risk of extinction" after losing millions of pounds as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Chester Zoo bosses say they are fighting for its future as the conservation charity could end 2020 more than £24 million in debt.

Managers say the Cheshire site is "Covid secure" and they would be able to limit numbers and enforce social distancing in a way public beaches, parks and beauty spots cannot, but the Government has not given zoos the green light to reopen.

Jamie Christon, the zoo's chief operating officer said: "As the UK's biggest and most popular charity zoo, we've tried to stay positive during this pandemic.

"Our conservationists have continued to prevent extinction, our virtual days have cheered up the nation, and our learning resources have helped out thousands of homeschooling families. We wanted to remain a beacon of hope.

"But now, the Government has ordered us to stay closed indefinitely and Chester Zoo is very much fighting for its future.

Pleasedontdothat · 03/06/2020 15:28

Would help if I shared the link ...

MinnieMountain · 03/06/2020 15:32

@Duckyneedsaclean ask to see their risk assessment. It should have the number of children expected to come back and what space and staff are needed to accommodate them; then what space and staff the school actually has, so how many children can come to school.

Spudlet · 03/06/2020 15:33

Our local zoo is having to restructure to try and stay afloat. They’re a charity, but apparently didn’t qualify for government assistance.

DS went back to preschool today! He was so happy, waving at his teachers as we headed in. Hen was a bit perturbed to be dunked in the bath as soon as he got home, but frankly he was so grubby he needed one either way Grin I’m so glad. Grubby children are happy children 🤣

I’ve also managed to order some paint samples from Dulux and had the woodburner man in to quote is for a new stove, so feeling very jolly in a murderous sort of way. Their lead time is 3-4 weeks so that will give us plenty of summer left for redecorating. Can’t wait to have it all done!

Bollss · 03/06/2020 15:33

please we've also had only 3 cases in the past week. Pop of 210k ish.

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/06/2020 15:39

We’ve had about 40 cases but in a population of 700,000... hardly an infected person lurking on every corner!

Bollss · 03/06/2020 15:41

Low numbers are great but it makes me sad. They're so low but we're still locked down?

3 cases in a week where we are and yet council won't open schools. How many cases will be acceptable? None?

Willow2017 · 03/06/2020 15:42

Its crazy. Our nearest is Edinburgh and its sprawling plenty room to move around if numbers limited. It does a huge amount of conservation work too it's so sad that none of this matters in the race to the bottom of being problem solving and sensible. And I WANNA SEE THE PANDAS🤣🤣🤣

We went to Chester Zoo when on holiday a few years ago. Had a great day apart from the bloody chimps were all hiding indoors. We were really looking forward to seeing all the 'characters' from the tv.😠 But thats the way it goes.

I hope all these places get a bloody ££££ boost from the gov akin to the millions they are handing out to thier mates for their crap 'expertise'.

Cattermole · 03/06/2020 15:43

3 out of 500K here and the local NHS clinical commissioning group are saying "if we get a second wave it could be very serious".

Orangeblossom78 · 03/06/2020 15:44

Bath area (180,000) one case in last week. 20 cases in total since end of April! I knew ours was low...but didn't realise that

IrelandsIndustry · 03/06/2020 15:45

I'm getting grief from relatives about sending 4 year old dd back to nursery

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/06/2020 15:45

My area has had zero cases in the last week!
So open the fucking schools/zoos!

Allflightscancelled · 03/06/2020 15:46

pleasedontdothat I bloody love that map! Thanks for sharing

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/06/2020 15:46

Zoo, I should say. We only have one!
We have more zoos than cases of corona...

BarkandCheese · 03/06/2020 15:48

My town have had 14 cases in a population of 56,000 which actually makes us a bit of a hotspot, we’re darkish blue on that map. Although of course that’s still a tiny number of cases, and I suspect are mostly linked to care homes because as I think I posted yesterday a care home worker in my area has tested positive.

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/06/2020 15:48

Actually I was wrong... 1 case in the past week!

DominaShantotto · 03/06/2020 15:51

@Willow2017

DS will have to go to a childminder the 3 days a week or whatever he doesn't go to school.

Havent the gov said that kids cannot go to two different places now? So only school or child minder not both. Screwed up going back to work for so many people of course it will affect mainly women as men apparently dont need to be flexible if they have a little woman at home according to many companies.😠

Considering the last 2 days I've been in the queue for both school drop offs next to one of the local childminders dropping off her wards... that ain't happening. There's no way people can cope with juggling the school situation and work in the normal world without combinations of provision - let alone during the apocalypse!
