I mean what does online learning consist of for a 4yo who's just started school? Who's parents both work ft?

DS will have to go to a childminder the 3 days a week or whatever he doesn't go to school. So when do I (not a qualified teacher) catch up with those three days? The weekend? Because that means neither he or I ever get a break.

This is fucking ridiculous and outrageous. I can't believe it's even being considered as a solution.

Huzzah for the Welsh news! That is indeed fab.

Makes me feel a bit more hopeful that school will return as normal in September.

glotterbug · 03/06/2020 13:41

Over the moon with the welsh school announcement. Waiting to find out the details, I have dd1 in year 2 and dd2 in reception. Fingers crossed it will work!

Mrsfrumble · 03/06/2020 13:55

That’s brilliant about Welsh schools! And what a relief to have someone (anyone!) come out and say that 6 months off school will be bad for children.

This morning’s spelling assignment caused DD to cry so hard I thought she was going to give herself an asthma attack, gasping “I want to go back to school!” between sobs.

I’m meeting a friend for a walk tomorrow evening. It’ll be my first time spending time with someone other than DH and DCs since lockdown started and I can’t wait! Must refrain from spoiling it by just ranting about schools though...

HauntedGoatFart · 03/06/2020 13:56

I honestly just have to believe that school will resume normally in Sept after a continuing decline in cases, because believing anything else opens a mental rats nest.

DominaShantotto · 03/06/2020 13:59

One of the school mums posted on FB the other day that she wondered why her child was insisting on only doing her spellings in one room in the house (they do them online via an app at their school) - she's now realised the child has written them down and stuck them to the ceiling in that room so she can cheat! DD is incredibly impressed by this!

BrewWineThanksCakeGin for everyone struggling with their MH at the moment. My emotions have been on a complete rollercoaster recently and I really struggle without having things to plan or look forward to. My thoughts were described earlier perfectly by a PP (forgot who it was now but I wasn't alone in agreeing with the description).

Been for a stomp in the woods in the rain with a friend which felt like licking a dripping tap in a housefire. We both restore ourselves with social contact so have (if we're honest) been horrible to live with for our DHs. Have made a pact to see each other more regularly. Drinks in the garden as much as possible, and if they stop us from doing that I'll just book some bank shifts in her department Grin

Cattermole · 03/06/2020 14:27

You know we were worried yesterday about the change that was government to review every 28 days? (Apart from the 28 Days Later jokes, yes)
Looks like they have actually played a blinder.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock, in a written ministerial statement, said the maximum review period will change from 21 days to 28 days.
“This will allow decisions to align more closely with the period of time necessary to assess the impact of previous changes on key data feeds, including the R (infection) rate.

“The Government will also keep all the measures under continual review and will account to Parliament on an ongoing basis.”

The reviews are continual and ongoing. I'm actually expecting to see more of the kind of short-notice lifting that we saw at the weekend, rather than less.

Duckyneedsaclean · 03/06/2020 14:29

Has anyone got a letter or similar they've sent to school governors/headteacher about their refusal to reopen?

I'm just so cross my children are missing out. The nursery school initially said they'd reopen to half the pupils, but have now backtracked. They wrote to say they couldn't reopen as the "children are too young to socially distance" and the building wouldn't allow them to keep bubbles separate. Bizarre as they have three separate classrooms with toilets, and three outdoor spaces Confused

Our local MP has been very vociferous in objecting to schools reopening. So a letter for her would also be good! Gah.

ThatLibraryMiss · 03/06/2020 14:29

If too many students defer the lower ranking universities may go to the wall and not be there in the same form the following year, while the more competitive ones won’t have the space for everyone the year after.

It could change the face of higher education. I’m told that it’s expected that some universities will go bankrupt, but it’s not clear whether they’ll be the red brick/plate glass ones or the more recent colleges-turned-universities. If a lot go, will it change the courses offered back to the more academic subjects and away from sports surface management and the like? Does this mean that a degree will once again be for the elite who get good A-levels, with the class divisions that implies?

Bollss · 03/06/2020 14:33

@Cattermole that has made me a happy woman. Thank you for pointing that out!

  1. Familiarise yourself with the maximum safe group size
We know that, unlike older children and adults, early years and primary age children cannot be expected to remain 2 metres apart from each other and staff. In deciding to bring more children back to early years and schools, we are taking this into account.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/preparing-for-the-wider-opening-of-schools-from-1-june/planning-guide-for-primary-schools

The bit where it specifically says young kids cannot be expected to socially distance which is WHY they're doing the fecking bubbles!

www.usforthem.co.uk also have a letter but it's more anti-social distancing than "stop pissing about not opening" (but they do seem to be one of the more intelligent and measured groups campaigning in this in terms of trying to stop the dementoring social distancing in schools idiocy)

We've just had an email sounding out how parents feel about bubbles with NO guaranteed 2m distance for the keyworker kids from one school. Sadly there wasn't a "2m is bollocks - bubble 'em up baby" option or I would have ticked that one.

As someone who has been an extremely law abiding citizen my whole life and so far not committed any crimes, I for one am actually quite glad they’ve criminialised sex with non live-in partners. Now I get to feel like a naughty and dangerous rebel every time we have a shag. I’m quite the master criminal at this stage Grin I wonder what my prison sentance will be should the police turn up at my door and I get caught?

I’ve had literally no contact with anyone other than my bf and one friend (who I’ve been for a long walk with twice) since lockdown started as I’m furloughed and live rurally with no family around. Both of the people I’ve met up with are in the same situation so minimal risk I would think but still, I’ve sure I’ve managed to kill at least a dozen children and pensioners every time I have an orgasm. Lock me up!

justasking111 · 03/06/2020 14:37

Just checked my MP Robin Millar, nowt on him re education yet.

RubberDinghyRapids · 03/06/2020 14:38

When I picked up 15m DD from nursery this week the staff member told me that it was really hard to encourage the children to distance from each other.

Er..... no one is expecting you to do that? (I responded much more politely obviously , giving assurances that it isn't expected, and that they should crack on as normal. They're constantly washing hands/cleaning anyway as it's the baby room).

justasking111 · 03/06/2020 14:42

DS going back into halls with girlfriend in September all booked, if the uni. decides he will have to live with others on his course all hell will break loose. He never bonded with others on his course despite getting on really well with flat mates on other courses. As for virtual freshers haha. their halls are about a 3 minute walk from weatherspoons. Good luck with that one unis.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 03/06/2020 14:42

A lot of welsh dementors suddenly seem a bit less certain about keeping their kids off until September now the schools are reopening if my friends are anything to go by. One teacher will be sending hers back but is worried about the staff! If you’re that worried set an example. Maybe that’s a bit harsh but they’ve been no support to me while I’ve been miserable about dd being alone for months

Willow2017 · 03/06/2020 14:43

Well if they go to school we cannot see them anymore" gggrrrr....

So they would rather sacrifice thier kids/grand kids education for thier own selfish reasons?
Wtaf?

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 03/06/2020 14:44

It took me a while to realise that the welsh news included high school! DD yr 6 is chuffed DS (yr 3) not so much but badly needed for him.

Just had a lovely message from our head saying he can't wait to see everyone again soon

Though my friend panicking as her employer expects her back to work from when schools reopen. She has 8 and 11 yr old. What does she do when they aren't in?!

Willow2017 · 03/06/2020 14:50

DS will have to go to a childminder the 3 days a week or whatever he doesn't go to school.

Havent the gov said that kids cannot go to two different places now? So only school or child minder not both. Screwed up going back to work for so many people of course it will affect mainly women as men apparently dont need to be flexible if they have a little woman at home according to many companies.😠

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/06/2020 14:52

Havent the gov said that kids cannot go to two different places now?

Yes at the moment they can only use one setting. Hopefully it will be different by September!

justasking111 · 03/06/2020 14:52

Well weather grim so am off to Tesco for first time in a month to kill a few people, wish me luck Wink DS has just gone off with a friend he has not seen since March to walk the dog woo hoo. Two days out in a row he is spreading his wings again.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 03/06/2020 14:58

Havent the gov said that kids cannot go to two different places now? So only school or child minder not both.

Shit, I missed this. I doesn't affect me but it will bugger up plans for a lot of people.

Bollss · 03/06/2020 14:58

Yes at the moment they can only use one setting. Hopefully it will be different by September!

I think it says "where possible"

I'd be telling them it's not fucking possible and sending Ds anyway. We can't live on only one wage!
