Outside lessons are a great idea LittleBelina..... way to go is to look for solutions to problems rather than the 'no we can't do that i's tooooo dangerous' that sadly some have adopted..

Drivingdownthe101 · 31/05/2020 16:42

Yes, our school are planning to do at least 50% of the day outside for reception and have put some shelters up in preparation.

Which is rather ironic as much of teaching is...teaching kids how to problem solve 🤣🤣

@Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy You're very welcome. If you decide to go, and have a fancy to go on some excursions, you should check out Images Around Austria on Facebook. Two fantastic blokes, funny, informative- they really know their stuff.

I'd forgotten about the Pink Panther! Grin I was going for Unagi, from FRIENDS Wink

JassyRadlett · 31/05/2020 16:55

@Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy Oh I’m glad you’re open to Austria! If you were doing Switzerland I’d suggest Bern and then up into the Oberland (Wengen or Mürren for choice) and then back down to Lucerne).

We were supposed to be taking the kids on a train holiday this summer - sigh! Was supposed to be Germany (Cologne) then sleeper down to Innsbruck and then up into the mountains (my fave is Achensee but Zell am See is also gorgeous, and the Zillertal is another gorgeous place.) Then down to Salzburg then the GORGEOUS train trip back via Innsbruck to Zurich - the view as the train goes through the Arlberg pass is spectacular.)

Hoping against hope we might be able to go somewhere, but it feels unlikely...

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 31/05/2020 17:03

I'd definitely recommend Cologne. DH and I have had lovely time there doing day trips from Brussels. We always have potatoes with assorted meats (I call it the farmyard special)! We'd recommend Munich and a trip to the Black Forest castles as well as Stuttgart if you like wine. If you can coincide your visit with the Oktoberfest it's fantastic fun (although these were pre-DD days so maybe terrible advice depending on the age of your children). If you want somewhere off the beaten track, I'd recommend Turin. It's got a fantastic Egyptian museum and film museum and does aperitvo, where you pay for your drinks and get a free/cheap buffet. It's the home of Martini and it tastes so fresh there (like Guiness from Dublin). The ice cream there s heavenly too. If you're tempted, this will swing the balance discoveritaly.alitalia.com/en/gb/destinations/turin/5-things-to-do-in-turin-castles-and-museums (Nothing to do with me I promise).

There are now dementors on one of the George Floyd protest threads moaning that the protesters weren't socially distancing and how it's going to cause a spike 🤦‍♀️

Weedsnseeds1 · 31/05/2020 17:15

AnxiousElephant77 personally, I wouldn't be putting myself in the middle of a riot right now, although I have no issue with people sitting in a beach in family groups.
A lot of the states have relatively low infections and death rates, the big figures are New York and New Jersey. Most states are the size of a European country and if you have 16 deaths in a day, like Minnesota, it must be hard to see the lockdown as something that applies to you.
People over there are angry, they are bored, they are increasingly unemployed.
They don't have the safety net of furlough or grants. If they are poor, they often don't have much access to health care. If they haveost their jobs, they've lost their health insurance for the whole family.
Then on top of that, there is another case of police brutality leading to a death.
It's thed blue touch paper for all their frustrations rolled into one.
You won't see much about it on here because it tends to be UK centric and people are far more interested in anonymously reporting their neighbours for real or perceived infringements.

Willitneverend · 31/05/2020 17:18

I had a lovely day sitting on the beach. It's an enormous beach and it was busier than it had been but folk were generally very well spread out and the main group of people not observing social distancing and mixing with other households were the police.

There seems to be a lot of dementoring on Scottish social media this weekend. Folk seem very angry the tide has turned away from staying at home.

Weedsnseeds1 · 31/05/2020 17:29

Interesting article Magda
I must be pure dark material. I've dodged every bullet on this one, from Chinese flights, the London Underground to Cheltenham race goers and multiple trips to the tip. I was at the Metropole in Hong Kong while Dr. Death was starting the SARS outbreak, without a snuffle. I was bitten multiple times during a dengue fever outbreak last year and... nope.
My twin sister had chicken pox, measles, German measles and mumps when we were kids. Guess who never cough any of them? Grin

AgentCooper · 31/05/2020 17:32

There was much publicised talk about outdoor learning being planned in Scotland but nothing since the blended pish was announced.

I do think we get some stuff really right in this country but then so much just feels like fluffy talk to show we’re so progressive and EXACTLY like Denmark and Sweden and then it never actually appears.

On a wee positive note though, my sister is a teacher in an ASN high school in the East End of Glasgow and she’s just won an award for the school on her work on LGBTQ issues with the kids. The first ASN school in Scotland to get this award so I am so proud. And my mum, dad and sister came and sat in our garden today. They were a bit nervous about not hugging DS but he went full toddler and threw himself upon them. All nerves out the window. I doubt I’ve ever seen my mum so happy.

I am SO putting this on my Bucket List! It sounds amazing.

2ndtimearound2020 · 31/05/2020 17:33

I think the problem with dementors is they are like a record stuck in a grove... no matter what the subject matter is they turn it around to the V thing.... murder/screaming/hysterical rantings and you really cannot reason with them. Every solution you provide is to them not acceptable.

As someone else said they moan some people are left to rot and then freedoms are increased and some moan it is crazy etc... no one can win an argument against a dementor - best to just feel sorry for them and avoid

KaronAVyrus · 31/05/2020 17:38

I think that’s it - they are more than likely pessimistic about everything. Best to avoid in case they drag you down with them.

Bollss · 31/05/2020 18:15

The latest dementing seems to be about shielders now being allowed out. And to meet one other person outside.

All the "they definitely want us to die" is driving me mad.

For 1. Nobody is forcing you to do it. You are free as a shielder to stay at home alone if you please.

And 2. You can't just catch it by walking past people ffs. And if the one person you meet is over 2 metres apart again you're very unlikely to catch it.

Prevalence in the community is low and presumably this is why they're now allowing it (and possibly to protect people's mental health!)

It's just being seen as a death sentence for shielders. Barmy.

GoldenOmber · 31/05/2020 18:22

Twitter is just ridiculous at the moment. "I know someone who works at an undertakers and they've been told to expect a wave of mass deaths from August", eight thousand retweets.

I wish people would be a little less keen to pass along scaremongering bullshit.

Jourdain11 · 31/05/2020 18:23

Yep, I think it's totally down to people's common sense and personal risk assessment. Right now, during heavy-duty chemo, I wouldn't meet up with people. But I might go across the road to the gardens because it's depressing to be indoors all the time.

A friend who is shielding because they take a particular medication for Crohn's stuck with it while the transmission rates in London are very high, but now that there is less risk (and she is feeling very well presently) she will go out for walks and meet a friend, but still is avoiding shopping and so on.

One just has to be sensible!

It's like the military lockdown we were going to have, because somebody saw soldiers doing maneuvers around Clapham. There's an army base there 🤣
BirdieFriendReturns · 31/05/2020 18:32

I’m having to ignore the shrieking about a second wave and how the virus is worse than Spanish flu. I just don’t read those posts and skip over them.

Jourdain11 · 31/05/2020 18:37

Did anyone read the BBC article about parents being shamed for their school choices during lockdown? Quite interesting... and also disturbing.

I've had "friends" AND family saying it's selfish to send my children back because:

A. Do I want them to DIE?
B. Don't I care about the teachers?
C. If the DC pass it onto me/DH and we DIE, the kids will be crippled with guilt for the rest of their lives.

I'm going into hospital for a week of chemo+ tomorrow. DH is working from home doing online provision and feedback for Y6s who aren't back in and Y5s. What are we supposed to do? Evaporate them for the week?

Jourdain, I'm having to accept that an awful lot of people are twats. I already thought an awful lot of people were quite stupid, so now I have a venn diagram of the two categories. The overlap in the middle is sizeable...

Pertella · 31/05/2020 18:43

Our local arena type place was supposedly being fitted out to become a makeshift morgue for all the dead bodies that were going to pile up.

I've done a quick search across all my cities postcode areas and theres been less than 50 'confirmed' covid deaths (from a population of around 180k)

Orangeblossom78 · 31/05/2020 18:46

Thanks BakewellTarts for the link Smile to Chris Whitty

Jourdain11 · 31/05/2020 18:47

I, like my DD1, don't really like to think that anyone is inherently stupid and horrible. So I find it quite sad.

My DH and DD2, on the other hand, think that most people they come across are stupid and horrible 😂
