Put on Horrible Histories for DS today. One sketch was 1600s wife swap featuring Puritan and Restoration couples.

As puritan Mr Misery dolefully intoned "Fun is sinful" whilst eating his meal of a raw unpeeled onion, I was put in mind of the dementors...

@TrustTheGeneGenie she’s fine thanks!

Chucked her straight in a cool shower for 20 minutes then took her up to the hospital. She’s got some huge blisters so we have to go back today and tomorrow to have them checked and the dressings changed but they don’t think it’s too bad.

One of the most difficult things for me has been dealing with the dichotomy of the actual stats, which are reassuring, and the general hysteria which is massively disproportionate.

Yes, absolutely. Same here. One of the key things Johan Gieseke talks about is that the majority of the measures governments are taking have no good science behind them in terms of managing pandemics - one of the only things that does is hand washing. Lockdowns absolutely don't. He is asking that the science gets followed, especially in light of the damage lockdowns do.

I linked to a Spectator article yesterday (the one saying COVID has an IFR of 0.2 to 0.5%) and in the comments I see someone had posted updated IFR's by age range (based on a Spanish study). It's still not absolute but it's staggering really. I went to read other papers this morning and they are full of 'this photo shows a healthy man who lost x stone after weeks of being in ICU with COVID and NEARLY DYING' and 'second wave due in weeks' kinds of stories. There is a video on my FB of a poor young child struggling to breathe in hospital. There are the comments of 'you're selfish if you go out.'

Can you even imagine if every news outlet in the world was reporting things calmly and proportionally? I know they won't ever do that but I look at the negative stories and my fear still spikes. I still sit here some days thinking, this is all too scary, I'm going to have to kill myself to have some control and avoid having to watch the world crashing and burning. And I'm not going to do that because I have some good real life support but it's still horrible experiencing those feelings and knowing others are too.

I went to Chew Valley yesterday OrangeBlossom, the car parks were closed but you can still park on the bit where the road crosses the lake.
There were ice cream vans 😁
A couple of OAP birdwatchers with table, chairs and beer (made mental note to bring my own next time), an OAP couple with a flask of tea and a middle aged guy photographing the egrets.
We then went to Burrington Coombe, which is completely open and empty, if you fancy a little trip out.

There's good news about a potential vaccine here - a non-dementory friend just shared this on FB

Orangeblossom78 · 21/05/2020 11:38

It was mental on the banks of the Avon at Salford Weeds, lots of revellers from inner Bristol, topless ladies - DH didn't know here to look! Grin

Police slowly driving about but didn't stop of anything, little roads very jammed...(lots of fun though)

Orangeblossom78 · 21/05/2020 11:39

Saltford

LilacTree1 · 21/05/2020 11:39

Mrsfrumble “ I’m guessing using public transport for leisure is still frowned upon”

But it’s not illegal.

Weedsnseeds1 · 21/05/2020 11:40

I have a slight dementor varient on my FB. The new age, woo, conspiracy theorist. I'm keeping her though, for the laughs.
She has it all sussed. All we have to do is spit on a seed and plant it, the seed then models itself on your DNA (but somehow still looks like a plant, rather than being your clone, I think), becomes a perfectly matched suoerfood for you and protects you from illness in all forms.
I assume this only works with non-toxic plants, if you want to give it ago, but didn't actually ask the question, so hemlock or Deafly Nightshade could still be OK Confused

Orangeblossom78 · 21/05/2020 11:40

Can you swim at Chew Valley? A couple of women in the Avon were swimming and saying it was colder 'than the pond'...and I wondered where they meant.

I saw dogs on paddle boards, lots of kayaks and the usual boats too...

BirdieFriendReturns · 21/05/2020 11:40

Is anybody else watching the “snitching” bit on This Morning with Vanessa Phelps? “Should I report my neighbour for having guests over” and one woman phoned up saying she was going to her sister’s for a birthday dinner and Phil was pretty rude to her!

DominaShantotto · 21/05/2020 11:41

Bit of nice news - one of our lecturers who is utterly utterly epic got one of the uni teaching awards this year. She's fantastic (considering her subject is fucking HARD) .

I love the fact we all got all these lectures about responsible and professional use of email and then we get ones from her with like 9million emojis in them!

LilacTree1 · 21/05/2020 11:41

V short post here

I had a feeling people were vocally supporting a lockdown they weren’t sticking to

Oh I have some..Weir nearby closed, I wondered as DH said it looked heaving fro the road the other day...it already used to get so busy so this doesn't surprise me. Also we got tummy bugs there in the past

Weedsnseeds1 · 21/05/2020 11:45

You can't swim at Chew or Blagdon Orangeblossom but you can sail or fish.
The pond is probably Henleaze lake, but I think its members only

Orangeblossom78 · 21/05/2020 11:47

Not really dementoring though just sounds overwhelmed.

Weedsnseeds1 · 21/05/2020 11:47

Or Abbotts pool maybe?

Orangeblossom78 · 21/05/2020 11:48

Thanks Flowers

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 11:56

@anotheremma the beach I refer to is old hunstanton/ hunstanton. not a secret far as I`m concerned. the cafe at the cliff top carpark near the loos is open for takeaway. on old hunstanton beach the loos are open just near the lifeboat station, but not the cafe there.

AnotherEmma · 21/05/2020 11:58

Fab thanks so much Smile

DominaShantotto · 21/05/2020 11:58

One local school now refusing to open for 1st June. They're saying they'll go a week later if the schools reopen for logistical reasons but meh.

I've not been told no for the sessions I've requested for after half term - but I think we're more protected from the politicking with being in the vulnerable kids group. I did say when they asked for attendance that if they needed to bump a kid for numbers on a given day mine were fine to do that.

BlackberryViolet · 21/05/2020 12:00

Just seen the headlines in our local rag. Local council still refusing to open up car parks behind the beach, country parks or the woodland parks. Still not safe apparently. We must all stay home this bank holiday. A couple of the car parks lead into a nature reserve. There is nothing there not even a loo, no houses nearby, no chip shops, nothing but dunes and beach. This beach is huge. Even if the car park was full you could be 100m away let alone 2Angry

There’s a little lay-by near one local park. People were parking in it. They have now shut the lay by.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 21/05/2020 12:04

The dementoring is strong in the SW that's for sure. The latest jolly jape from the self-appointed guardian of the villagers behaviour, is to call for those on furlough to be penalised (i.e not paid), if they go to the beach or beauty spots not within a 10 mile distance of home. This, apparently, will make those of us furloughed realise that we are NOT on holiday (her caps not mine), and it's unfair that those working cannot enjoy the sunshine. The post was jumped on so hard that the foot prints are still visible.

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 12:05

@AnotherEmma once my sunburns gone (we forgot to put on the suncream we took) I shall be scouting out Brancaster beach. According to the DM photo with the amount of folk there I`m assuming the carpark was open. But I shall go and see if the snackshack and loos are also open too . Love Brancaster beach. did my very 1st wildcamp there......

Orangeblossom78 · 21/05/2020 12:07

Maybe it is worse in villages and 'beauty spots' than in the city? as London doesn't sound that dementor-y in some areas either. Not sure Confused
