Hi @Dollybagwash it's so rubbish up here. Our poor children.

AnotherEmma · 20/05/2020 22:56

We went to the beach today, took DS (aged 3) who loved every second of it. He deserved it too after 2 months of lockdown.

It was a long drive but it was bloody worth it.

However, the beach car park and toilets were closed - ridiculous to close toilets when people are going to the beach anyway (it was busy!) and we also know how important it is to WASH OUR HANDS!

The beach road was blocked off so people had to park in the town car park and walk 2km to the beach. I can see why they'd done it (the beach would have been even busier otherwise) but they are basically discriminating against people with limited mobility.

No food on sale either, no shops or fish and child or ice cream vans. We'd taken a picnic anyway as we'd anticipated that. (Picnic on the beach, the last thread title Grin)

It was bloody lovely to see people relaxing and having fun on the beach. Mostly families but some couples (young and old) and dog walkers, too.

AnotherEmma · 20/05/2020 22:58

fish and child chips (oops! We might be murderers but even we don't eat children!)

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/05/2020 23:04

She's in the Midlands. I will call her in the morning and get her take on the situation.
If necessary, she is welcome to come and stay and I don't have insane neighbours who would demand the SAS storm the house.
If she's fine and just needs help with finding a repatriation flight, I can help her with that too.
At the moment, I only have the father's take on it, so need to speak to her as well.
She's Muslim, so fasting as well, which must make it even harder (the family are Indian, but they have lived in Dubai a long time).
She may be doing better than he thinks, but he did send me some video clips she had sent to him and she seems very isolated and alone.

I just watched BBC Scotland news for the first time in ages. Christ, no wonder people are going mad. It featured a survivor but was ge really still quite doom-monger-y.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 20/05/2020 23:14

Like half the country (apparently) I also went to the beach today. I was nervous as I didn't know if it would be empty and there would be people out having a go at anyone who dared to step foot on it but it was lovely and such a relief to be out. It wasn't crowded at all but there were a decent number of families there having fun. There were people out on paddle boards and boats and waterskiing and children looking carefree. I got home to find the field next door full of about 20 teenagers playing a ball game and drinking. Grin Someone was even tending to the cricket pitch which I thought was a good sign.

I was feeling really low today up until going to the beach. It was all getting badly on top of me and I was feeling hopeless. I managed to see a few things on the news that dragged me down - I think it was a top EU medic AND someone from the WHO saying people shouldn't celebrate or let their guard down right now but should only be thinking about preparing for a second wave. I sat there thinking, how dementor-like can you get? Even if we have a second wave (and who knows! It's not guaranteed) many people are suffering very seriously with mental health issues right now. It has been frightening and overwhelming and people face losing jobs, etc. Let people have a bit of bloody fun. We can't sit around being miserable for months on the basis more might die. The sun is shining, the best thing people can do is get outdoors and get some fresh air and take care of themselves. I managed to see 2 seconds of the evening news too where some Ipswich hospital seemed to be saying they were preparing for social distancing to last for YEARS. Dear god, no it won't. You just have to look around you to see it can't - it's unnatural and completely unsustainable even for just a few weeks.

Anyway, there is a nice article in the Spectator about a study done at Stanford which shows the IFR is likely to be 0.2 to 0.5%. I am clinging onto that because it's hard to keep positive this evening otherwise. I'm sick of sitting in a room on my own, not knowing when I can mix properly with friends and have a social life again.

RhymingRabbit my local beaches absolutely are touristy, they aren't rammed by any means (admittedly they are massive), it looks nothing like it normally would this time of year.
Most toilets are closed but a couple have been kept open and details are on the council website.
Next bay up is a different council and their toilets are all open. The beach isn't as big, or as nice, but the council there stayed that they believe of is a vital service for locals as well as visitors and they stay open.

Willitneverend · 20/05/2020 23:18

Oh, I think I caught the bit about social distancing going on forever too. And a segment where a primary school had made a big point of taping books onto a bookshelf to make a point about how terrible it all is, rather than putting them in a box. Why!?

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/05/2020 23:19

And we are awash with ice cream vans, coastal and inland 😁

ilovecardigans · 20/05/2020 23:36

a segment where a primary school had made a big point of taping books onto a bookshelf to make a point about how terrible it all is, rather than putting them in a box

I saw that too and it really angered me. Completely over the top and unnecessary.

PickAChew · 21/05/2020 00:11

It's also one of the most pokestop dense parts of the Northeast, @Dowser :o

PickAChew · 21/05/2020 00:12

Taping books to a shelf is just bloody ridiculous.

Orangeblossom78 · 21/05/2020 06:49

I loved going along in the little boat yesterday, looking at the water and time going quicker than usual, not looking at the clock, it can be quite fun to rebel slightly and skip the home schooling too. It took my mind of things in the same way something like meditation would, being outdoors can be very mindful can't it in a way.

Even with the disapproving dementor.

So, I decided not to let dementors put me off and just think, am I ok with what I am doing? and if so do that. Not to care so much what others think. Especially dementors.

Oh BOGROLL I understand about the limited conversation. I'm cooped up with DH and two teen boys who all watch things like Red Dwarf, Star Trek etc over and over and do lots of coding and computing / electronics which is great but I just feel quite excluded sometimes.

I do escape them all by walks and sometimes they go out (DH self employed and has a shed type thing for work they all go to sometimes) we all need time space and freedom don't we

Good to see most of the responses to this school thread seem more normal today

bookworm14 · 21/05/2020 07:41

The ‘why are London’s figures so low’ thread has some classic dementory replies. The figures aren’t really that low, it’s just the government fiddling them to try and get people back to work!!

Pepperwand · 21/05/2020 07:44

Can I join? I've been lurking for a while and my gld have I needed to read these threads and know that there are others out there thinking the same as DH and I.

I also saw the BBC news item with the headteacher putting bloody caution tape round the books in the school. And they say there isn't political point scoring going on? I call BS. I must stop watching BBC news as it has been absolutely awful in its coverage. Item this morning saying we must stop the blame game that NHS hospitals knowingly sent covid patients back to care homes and there is no evidence this happened. Well it bloody did, my brother works in a care home and was saying weeks ago the local hospital had been returning elderly residents with coronavirus back to he nursing home as they didn't want deaths on the official hospital figures.

Bollss · 21/05/2020 07:51

The people of my town have an excellent work ethic I've noticed. Many of them would prefer to lose their jobs and claim benefits than send their children back to school.

Oh well all the more jobs for people who actually want them I suppose.

It's a shame they don't realise poverty shortens your life expectancy too!

rosettesforjill · 21/05/2020 07:56

We had a four page letter from DS's school with the details of what was going on. It all sounds very strict if you're an adult but I don't think DS will notice! Groups of 10, no social distancing within their groups. Lots of outdoor activities. The emphasis is very much on getting children up to the same level and healing any mental impacts of lockdown. The biggest difference for him will be no school dinners in lunch hall as they'll all be having packed lunches in their classrooms.

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 08:02

helllloooo!
as my name suggests I HAVE been to the beach (3 times in a week ). its an hour away. The seaside we use has been very sensible. ALL the toilets and carparks are open. Yesterday we had a whippy and doughnuts. So no pooing and weeing in corners etc etc. The beach has oodles of space!
Great to see everyone out, near normal! Not all seasides are being silly (looking across the wash at you skeggy!) shutting bogs and not understanding why people are shitting on the beach!

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 08:05

I was "freedom" last week .....

LivinLaVidaLoki · 21/05/2020 08:09

I live in a seaside town.
All our local facebook dementors are sharing a picture of it being overcrowded yesterday and all getting soooo angry.
Screaming about "peaks" "second waves" and "selfish bastards why can't they just stay at home".
It's full on hysteria.
I made the comment that the poct8us clearly doctored as the two buildings in the frame are a half a mile away from each other, so they would not appear that close in a frame, there is a significant chunk that's just disappeared from one of the buildings and there are another two buildings in between the two which are nowhere on the picture and the amount of streetlights is laughable.
Jesus the abuse I'm getting.
Why the need to create drama where there is none.
Yes it was busier yesterday but most were keeping a safe distance. But the locals here are absolutely screeching. I thought it was nice.
Anyway DS went back to school yesterday and had an ice cream from the ice cream man yesterday (paid in cash), so we alone have probably caused the second peak. But I was so happy at seeing him so happy I almost cried so fuck it.

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 08:13

when I say near normal, I mean social distancing etc. BUT it goes to show that a sensible council does exist. The benches have signs on to remind folk 2m rule , don`t share with a stranger etc. use phone app at the carpark if u can so dont touch parking machine buttons, lots of soap and water in bogs for handwashing blah di blah. the smiles and looks of families getting out .......

some places round here are shut (sandringham, wells , rspb).

beachgoer · 21/05/2020 08:17

Im sure the fb page was screeching! DH used to teach in this seaside towns secondary (yep that local), we are more aware of the coastal deprivation/ rural poverty there. The tourist £ is important! and the council know it. Hence they`ve decided to allow opening of some prom stalls etc. They need the economy to get going a bit. Its bleak in the winter!
