Film recommendations rom com type for 14 year old!

ITonyah · 18/05/2020 16:23

My 14 year old dd has just started really enjoying films. She hates anything in the least bit scary.

She's enjoyed
Devil wears Prada, Clueless, 10 things I hate about you, Booksmart

Basically rom coms!

Any ideas?

Here on earth
A walk to remember
(Above are weepy but good)
Chasing liberty
You could try old series like Dawson's creek , charmed, ally macbeal

I loved The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the book is also great! It has a lot of difficult content in it but I would say it's an important film for teenagers to watch. You could even watch it together and discuss it.

Here's a list I made when searching for films with either strong female characters, or feminist themes. I can't vouch for them all.

Whip It (teen film, women's Roller derby)
Juno
Hidden Figures (true stost African American women who worked at NASA)
A League of their own (about women's baseball team in 1949's)
10 Things I Hate About You
Arrival (sci fi film with strong female role)
Little Women
The Help
The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants
Bend it like Beckham
The Hate U Give
The Color Purple
Gravity
The Hunger Games
Divergent
I also think films that don't have female protagonist but highlight misogyny are good, like Loser. But that may be more 15 plus.

Not a rom com, but Hidden Figures

Herpesfreesince03 · 19/05/2020 11:22

My kids love how to lose a guy in 10 days. It’s hilarious

BiggerBoat1 · 19/05/2020 11:26

Love Simon is great - from the book Simon Versus the Homosapien Agenda

NetballHoop · 19/05/2020 11:35

We bought a Zoo

And when things return to (more) normal, you can visit the actual zoo which is in Dartmoor rather than Southern California.
www.dartmoorzoo.org.uk/
They need as many visitors and donations as possible.

BiggerBoat1 · 19/05/2020 16:13

Yes to We Bought a Zoo!! Its lovely, plus it has Matt Damon to lust over. Win win!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 19/05/2020 16:41

Not exactly a romcom, but What We Did On Our Holidays is a lovely film. Billy Connolly dies while out with his grandchildren, who can't get the adults to pay attention because they're arguing. So they give him a Viking funeral.

BikeRunSki · 19/05/2020 18:51

What we did on our holidays is gorgeous. It is much lovelier than might be interpreted by the description above.

Alsohuman · 19/05/2020 18:53

It’s a lovely film @Bikeskirun.

TheSheepofWallSt · 19/05/2020 18:55

They’re old but:
Mystic Pizza
She’s All That
10 Things I Hate About You

And get her watching Buffy!

TheSheepofWallSt · 19/05/2020 18:55

YY to Little Women - the new one made me weep start to finish. The old one with Winona Rider is ace.

Alsohuman · 19/05/2020 20:01

I hated the latest version of LW. The only good thing about it was the frocks. The Susan Sarandon version was a million times better.

RuffleCrow · 19/05/2020 20:10

10 Things I Hate About You is such a classic - Heath Ledger Star

Rewatched both When Harry Met Sally and You've Got Mail recently. The former is much better but it does have the fake-orgasm-in-the-deli scene. And both sort of perpetuate the myth that arsehole men love us really Hmm

Mind you I mainly watch these films because I love New York (is it legal to marry a city yet?!)

sobersides · 19/05/2020 20:13

Blended is on Amazon Prime. Me and DD really enjoyed that.
My go to film though is always White Chicks.

DianaT1969 · 19/05/2020 20:17

Leap Year

Notnownotneverever · 19/05/2020 20:29

Bruce Almighty
Our Family Wedding starring America Ferrera
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 1 & 2
Father of the Bride 1 and part 2 (old but good!)
Steel Magnolias (old again but pretty good)
Inn Love (Netflix original)

TheSheepofWallSt · 19/05/2020 20:54

@RuffleCrow

You are me.
Have developed a massive crush on NY. I’ve never been!!!
If you haven’t watched Mrs Maisel on Amazon q good for a NY fix (and it’s vintage style)

JassyRadlett · 19/05/2020 21:03

Oh so many of these! What a lovely list.

How is she on old movies? I’d go for things like Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, It Happened One Night.

And definitely both Freaky Fridays.

Rollergirl11 · 19/05/2020 21:42

DD and I really like Crazy Stupid Love. And I usually hate romcoms.

Cupasoup76 · 19/05/2020 21:45

My 13 year old loves Crazy Rich Asians and the Pitch Perfect films

sofakingawesome · 19/05/2020 22:12

27 dresses, pretty woman, nottinghill, about a boy, Bridget Jones definitely, also saving mr banks, and if she's into musical type ones the new Mary poppins is brilliant, as is phantom of the opera and the greatest show (deviating from the brief slightly but ones I love to watch over and over)

Taddda · 19/05/2020 22:19

Is Silver linings playbook a bit old/out there for her? Bloody love that film!

RuffleCrow · 19/05/2020 22:20

@TheSheepofWallSt - save every penny you can and go!! (Once all this is over, of course). It's one of the few things/places in life that actually lives up to the hype! Be prepared for your crush to become a full blown affair Grin

I haven't seen The Marvellous Mrs Maisel yet but I've been meaning to for a while now. Not least because Alex Borstein is in it.
