Can I have a smear test

Lemonslices · 18/05/2020 11:51

I'm 8 months overdue a smear test, my doctors phone has been permanently engaged.
I've got other issues with my lady area that I'm worried out.

Can I get a smear test done during this coronovivous time?

Mine has been postponed. Previously had pre cancerous cells and had smears every six months so trying hard not to worry.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/05/2020 12:19

They aren't doing them at the moment in my health authority area.

My surgery aren't doing them either at the moment.

Lemonslices · 18/05/2020 12:39

It honestly winds me up, i can't help but think of all the people that are going to die in the next few years because they were unable to have these kind of check ups.

I have a condition with my area that can turn cancerous and I'm so so worried.

stay at home... Save the NHS.....save lives.
Ummmmmm I need a vital check up and because of this I might lose my life.

Could you ask for a GP appointment to check the area that has the potential to turn cancerous, while you are there you could discuss your concern about your overdue smear. They can either reassure you, book you in ... or maybe do one there and then?

PotteringAlong · 18/05/2020 12:44

True, but you said yourself you are 8 months overdue. They would have done it in October for you without a problem.

lovinglavidaloca · 18/05/2020 12:46

I’m also due a repeat smear for the ‘changes in cells’ and stupidly left it and now can’t get one.

I’m very anxious about it now.

MrsG010814 · 18/05/2020 12:46

I'm also very concerned about this. I had severe pre-cancerous cells removed 2 years ago after a borderline change smear test. I go to colposcopy every 6 months to be checked. Its not due until July but it makes me so anxious the thought that it will be postponed.

HouseOfSticks · 18/05/2020 12:59

How are they ever every going to catch up on all these appointments. Around 60,000 additional deaths will be caused because of the complete shut down of all other areas of the NHS. A complete disgrace.

Whatthefunk · 18/05/2020 13:44

Hi. I guess it depends where you live. I had one a couple of weeks ago. My Doctor's surgery didn't want routine appointments to fall behind.

Windyatthebeach · 18/05/2020 13:52

Mine has just sent a reminder.. I cancelled the last one due to CV.. Letter says final reminder so they must be doing them!!

Yet if you hadn't gone EIGHT MONTHS over you could have had yours done ages ago Hmm

Spam88 · 18/05/2020 14:07

Whether screening is going ahead depends on where you are, but your other concerns are a separate issue and you should make an appointment to discuss those.

Lordfrontpaw · 18/05/2020 14:08

Due one too. Was about to book after a few reminders then ‘pufft, lockdown’.

user1519475227 · 18/05/2020 14:12

I had one 2 weeks ago, my area are still doing then and got my results last week. Just call until you get through see what they say, they might be still doing them - no one on the internet can tell you if they are or not

crybaby11 · 18/05/2020 14:15

Not being rude but if you had booked 8 months ago you would have been fine, like a pp said.

Stop being a moaner

Lolliloo1234 · 18/05/2020 14:16

I’m sat waiting to go in for mine right now. Call up and insist.

Lolliloo1234 · 18/05/2020 14:16

Politely. Obviously.

MakingASilkPurse · 18/05/2020 14:57

Unfortunately our surgery are point blank not doing them, insisting isn't an option. I can understand why the OP is worried - IMO even though it was overdue she is still entitled to feel upset that the tests have been stopped.

MunchyMunchkin · 18/05/2020 14:59

Ring your surgery and get a phone review with a doctor about your other issues. Smears are a screening not a diagnostic test. If appropriate they will get you into the surgery for examination and do the smear at the same time.

Lemonslices · 18/05/2020 15:10

Wow. The point Im making is not being able to get one at this time, I hold my hands up I should have had one months ago but other health problems got on top of me and that was bottom of the list.

It would have been sooner but this coronovivous has added more time to my wait as I wasn't sure if I'd even get an appointment as all my important appointments got cancelled or postponed.

Honestly you and the others telling me it's my fault for waitng and to stop moaning is DISGUSTING, you don't know my situation and you don't know why I didn't have it done 8 months ago. I'm appalled and you should be ashamed. I asked for advice an all I got was..... Stop moaning it's your fault.

Get a grip. A massive one.

tilligan · 18/05/2020 15:27

Had mine last week (south west), negative result back a week later.

tilligan · 18/05/2020 15:33

Just keep calling the surgery, or email them and someone will let you know whether they have appointments.
