That is an awful story @Orangeblossom78.

Madness. Complete madness. Angry

Thisdressneedspockets · 19/05/2020 08:43

I went for a walk with a friend the other day. We didn't have a socially distanced walk, because if two people walk at opposite sides of a path, it makes it hard for anyone to pass.
For the first time, I'd been lulled into feeling it was situation normal, until I noticed a family kindly tucked up on a verge waiting for us to pass..

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 19/05/2020 08:51

I know. 4 people died in wales yesterday. Why are we not celebrating with joy instead of endlessly extending lockdown?

@DominaShantotto - very glad you’re making progress. It’s beyond belief you’ve had to fight for this.

Cattermole · 19/05/2020 08:51

Thirty cases.

OutwardBound2016 · 19/05/2020 08:53

I do think the tide is turning, I’m increasingly hearing from people that their mothers cancer treatment has been postponed/they are due back into work on the 1st June/their child’s SEND assessment has been pushed back. People (that I’ve spoken to at least) seem to be more angry and frustrated because they feel their their personal needs are being forgotten in all this. From a local perspective things seem to have calmed down here, lots more people about but generally everyone is being sensible and respectful of others, lots of smiles and chats in the parks etc, the one thing that concerns me is that my DC have only been to the supermarket (once) in almost 9 weeks, I’m desperate to take them somewhere but everything seems to unwelcoming of children suddenly, it’s incredibly sad.

HauntedGoatFart · 19/05/2020 09:00

I was thinking of getting a t-shirt printed like the FRANKIE SAY RELAX one on Friends.

Except it would say EPIDEMIOLOGISTS SAY "NOBODY CATCHES IT BY PASSING SOMEONE ON THE STREET"

I would genuinely wear an "EPIDEMIOLOGIST SAY RELAX" T-shirt. Please, someone, get a tee-mill on it and we can start looking out for anti-Dementors in real life :)

Blobby10 · 19/05/2020 09:01

@Daffodil101 as that very aptly describes the way I look right now then please do call me Blob! 😂😂😂 @userxx exactly - especially that idiot Piers Morgan - he was actually quite decent in the early days but has now descended into government bashing. And I lost ALL respect for Dr Hillary Jones when he said that you shouldn't wash your car in the street as it would risk passing on the virus. In the water. FFS!!!

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 19/05/2020 09:02

My children are completely bored off their skull. We are lucky and fortunate: we have a big house, a garden, plenty toys, lots of food, countryside and beach nearby. And they (and we) are bored of it all. Why? Because it’s all been exhausted.

You could live in Utopia itself under these conditions (in Scotland) and need sectioning after the now 9 weeks we have been void of any the usual external stimuli (swimming pool etc).

My children are BORED. And that is making them destructive and angry. We live in a rental and that’s back to the landlord in October. It is a matter of time before they take their fuckery to the next level and pen the walls or something. My otherwise really well behaved DD scratched every single panel of our car the other day. I mean, WTF.

Namesgonenow · 19/05/2020 09:02

I’ve occasionally lurked oh these fab threads and just wanted to say do follow or check out the Twitter feed of prof Karol Sikora @proflarolsikora who’s wise and hopeful analysis and tweeting on this is a ray of hope.

DesmondTheMoonbear · 19/05/2020 09:03

Anyone else finding the constant scaremongering headlines are making them irrationally angry? Todays gem: people in hospital with COVID get hallucinations and delirium. Of course they bloody do - they have a high temperature!! Anyone with a high temperature can get those symptoms! Its not just bloody sodding COVID 19!!!!!

Yes, a very high temperature can cause delirium but there is also a phenomenon called ICU delirium, used to be known as ICU psychosis, which is far from new and is certainly not unique to Coronavirus, in which a stay in ICU or sometimes another part of the hospital, is enough to induce delirium, cognitive impairment, sometimes PTSD etc, regardless of illness.

This is an interesting article on it. www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/06/the-overlooked-danger-of-delirium-in-hospitals/394829/

I agree totally that it's totally irresponsible of the BBC to make out that this is unique to Covid-19 and I'm considering making a complaint.

Mrsfrumble · 19/05/2020 09:04

Another waffley comment piece in the Guardian about how schools shouldn’t be going back, this time from Suzanne Moore (who I usually like). Her argument is not very clear, but seems to be “because it’s what the government want and they’re tories so it must be bad”. She does at least mention the importance of school for children’s emotional wellbeing and social development, but I rolled my eyes at her dismissal of the Australian study that suggests that children are not significant vectors, “because it’s only one study”.

The fact that no one’s else seems interested in studying it makes me angry. If I were in charge (as I told DH the other day) I’d be throwing Everything at investigating that possibility because it seems hugely important to me. I can’t believe everyone is so relaxed about confining and isolating children when it’s possible they neither significantly suffer or spread the virus.

Blobby10 · 19/05/2020 09:07

DesmondTheMoonbear thank you for that link - it looks very interesting! I hadn't heard of it specifically but was aware of the other issues during/following a stay in hospital. I'm not involved in healthcare in any way but this does interest me Grin

It wasn't just the BBC making the 'headline' but the papers as well.

fartingsparkles · 19/05/2020 09:11

@Cattermole I just read that article. My eyes rolled so much I can see my shoulder blades.

For some reason (personal, political, pessimism - who tf knows!) it is as if c19/lockdown has given some people a focus. And when it goes they will have 'lost themselves'. I wish they would fecking lose themselves - far, far away from me.

Schools are a big thing on my fb unfortunately. I seem to know a high proportion of teachers and tas. And a lot of people who seem to be politically slightly to the left of Karl Marx. An awful lot of them sadly seem to be sharing crap. I genuinely thought better of them. Although some, who are very lovely people, are those who are quick to get onto things like the "Charlie's/Alfie's Army" and every bloody crap 'warning' that snopes has debunked.

This is not 'life now'; this is not our 'new normal' (I really hate that phrase, nearly as much as lockdown). Most people enjoy their 'normal life' - cafes, restaurants, theatres, holidays - too much to allow these to be permanently removed for 'the greater good'. Temporarily they/we will accept, but I can't see the dementor predictions of "nothing til 2025, and only then if we are very lucky", being something people will take.

DesmondTheMoonbear · 19/05/2020 09:14

It seems that I'll be making a few complaints then. Not that they'll give a shit, but it'll give me something to channel my ire into.

Even if they(understandably) weren't familiar with ICU delirium, as you mentioned they should be familiar with very high temperatures sometimes causing delirium. It's disgustingly irresponsible for them to report every possible symptom and side effect as though they are all unique to Covid 19.

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/05/2020 09:17

Yes, I suffered delirium in ICU when my temperature was 42 as a result of mastitis. Don’t see people calling to ban breastfeeding!

SummerHouse · 19/05/2020 09:20

@Namesgonenow thank you I will check him out.

Mascotte · 19/05/2020 09:22

There's been a big campaign recently, well before all this, to recognise the signs of delirium, particularly in elderly people. It's really common with UTIs in that population too and important to screen for to exclude mental health issues. It's bizarre that it's being headlined as a Covid issue.

I'd also heard of the ICU thing years ago. It's just crap scaremongering to be painting it as a new thing to be frightened of.

I saw The Globe is in danger of insolvency. The arts are screwed and it’s really sad. You can’t social distance in an orchestra pit!

MaudesMum · 19/05/2020 09:31

I do think that the government's demonstrable lack of competency and bare-faced lying over some issues (eg protecting care homes, ramping up testing) is making it really hard for many people to trust them, so I can quite see why them saying "trust us, its all going to be fine in schools," isn't likely to inspire confidence. And putting Michael Gove up to talk the other day, given his track record with schools, was not exactly helpful. Twats.

DominaShantotto · 19/05/2020 09:33

Sending Michael Gove as the trustworthy face to talk to schools was the equivalent of sending Hannibal Lector in to teach cookery.

I can't believe it - the schools have leased and I have both kids allowed back in as vulnerable kids struggling to cope!

SummerHouse · 19/05/2020 09:38

Follow @ProfKarolSikora on Twitter. What a wise man.

rosettesforjill · 19/05/2020 09:53

I've just been on a call with my manager who is concerned that we're lifting lockdown "too soon"... but the changes even in England are tiny and don't seem particularly likely to cause any more infections really.

My office are wanting everyone back in which I don't really agree with and will be impossible for me until nursery is open full time and before and after school club are running. I'm going to have to be awkward about it which is frustrating as actually there's nothing I would like more than to be having daily contact with some different people!

Nihiloxica · 19/05/2020 09:56

It makes no sense to say we can't trust the government AND to insist that same untrustworthy government should be trusted with keeping us confined to our homes.

"This is a government of incompetent liars, and for that reason must be allowed indefinite control of our movements." Confused

Talk about trying to have it both ways.

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/05/2020 09:59

I've just been on a call with my manager who is concerned that we're lifting lockdown "too soon"

I don’t get this. We’re still not allowed to see our family. Still can’t send our children to school. Gyms, swimming pools, cafes, restaurants, sports clubs, shops, cinemas, theatres, hairdressers, beauty salons etc are still closed. How on earth does that translate to ‘lifting lockdown’?

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/05/2020 10:00

That’s so true Nihiloxica
