Do you have a milkman/woman?

I'd always bought milk from the supermarket or local shops if I was running low but when Covid hit and I couldn't get an online delivery, I signed up with the local dairy. It's been great. They only deliver three times a week whereas it was daily when I was a child. They sell milks, cream, eggs, juice and another local dairy also does bread.

I'd have never done this if it wasn't for covid and it's got me wondering if others have done the same?

I'd like to but they'd be nicked from the doorstep round here and my front door opens straight into the road. So I go and collect some from the local raw milk farm using refill bottles.

megletthesecond · 18/05/2020 19:40

Yes. Milk and More for about five years now. It was a lifesaver during the early days of lockdown.

I try to ignore how much it costs. It's my luxury.

Notso · 18/05/2020 19:48

I looked into it but the one who delivers to my area only comes twice a week and I can't fit that many milk bottles in the fridge.

We've had a mailman every since moving to this house, so for the last 15 years.

He delivers 6 days a week sometime in the early hours.

We usually only get milk but he does offer some additional items.

We can change our order just by leaving a note in the empty milk bottle.

Rebelwithallthecause · 18/05/2020 19:50

Milk and more here too. Milk in glass bottles. 7 bottles a week is £5 so doesn’t seem extravagant at all

Aragog · 18/05/2020 19:50

Ours are still glass bottles too.

GinnyStrupac · 18/05/2020 19:52

Yes, for many years - usually just milk except for Christmas but have added extras like eggs, juice, yoghurt and cottage cheese since lockdown began. More products are available like cream, fromage frais, crème fraiche, bread, mineral water, fizzy drinks, organic and alternatives to milk. They've never let us down and I intend to carry on with the extras once this is all over. It is a few pence more, but it is worth it for the convenience, reliability, local produce and employees, glass bottles and I save on petrol and time.

Vintagevixen · 18/05/2020 19:53

Yes I've just moved so signed up to milk and more, had my first deliveries this week.

Really pleased with it - the glass bottles make me all nostalgic for my childhood! plus I get full fat so get the cream on the top bit which is lovely. Also they deliver loads of extras, really handy for me as I don't drive.

Glass bottles recycled, supporting the local milkman etc, what's not to like IMO.

Maryann1975 · 18/05/2020 19:53

We have a milk man, but milk is delivered in plastic containers. It works out quite a lot more expensive to get 4 one pint glass bottles Rather than one 4 pint plastic bottle which is a shame, but financially I have to have plastic as we get through so much.

He generally turns up in the middle of the night. I was watching a late night film one night and he turned up about 1am!

Slydiad · 18/05/2020 19:55

Yep, we'd been thinking about it for a few years, and finally got around to signing up when we realized we didn't want to go to the grocery store any more often than necessary during this pandemic.

They only come once a week in our area, but I'm still very glad we signed up. We get milk & cream, butter, eggs, coffee, bags of baby spinach, and a decent if not amazing selection of cheeses. It's easy to change our standing order through their app, and prices are competitive with grocery stores in our area, and certainly cheaper than the general grocery delivery apps. Plus it feels kind of charmingly old fashioned to have a milkman. Ours is named Kyle, and he always has a smile and a wave for the baby.

CMOTDibbler · 18/05/2020 19:56

Yes, we've been having milk delivered in glass bottles for years. We have upped our order and now have 3 deliveries a week and get yogurt and some other bits as well

TwatCat · 18/05/2020 19:56

We have milk delivered in glass pint bottles. It tastes so much nicer than plastic bottles.

moobar · 18/05/2020 19:57

Yes since lockdown.

It shows the price difference though. I was paying 1.10 for four pints in tesco. Now 70p a pint. I don't mind and will keep it up, love the glass bottles, the quality and the freshness.

BakewellTarts · 18/05/2020 19:58

We use Milk and More too. Love our milkman. 3 deliveries a week since we had our family. And yes milk tastes better when it comes in glass bottles.

lemontreebird · 18/05/2020 20:01

Yes, I've had one for 20 years. One of the few places you can still get nice milk, not that homogenised crap.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/05/2020 20:05

We've had a doorstep milk delivery for about ten years. We recently changed 'milkmen' because the first one retired, but it was pretty easy to get a new one. Admittedly we do live very rurally... I walk up the road to buy eggs, too.

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 18/05/2020 20:06

Yes and get glass bottles. Love it.

ChicCroissant · 18/05/2020 20:08

Yes, we've had milk delivered for years - the amount has gone down from the days when DD used to drink a lot of it, so now we just get a couple of pints in glass bottles from a local dairy. Do get cream and other bits at Christmas as well. Our milkie also delivers in the middle of the night, usually about 1.15am!

1066vegan · 18/05/2020 20:08

I never have. But you wouldn't expect me to with my username. 😁

lakeswimmer · 18/05/2020 20:09

Yes - we've had doorstep milk deliveries in glass bottles since we moved to this area - about 20 years ago. We're now getting spuds from them too.

HathorX · 18/05/2020 20:11

Signed on with Milk&More a few years ago for environmental reasons, we get all our fruit juice and milk in glass bottles. Our milkman is fantastic and I am so glad we use the service even if it is a bit more expensive.

amazedmummy · 18/05/2020 20:13

Yes! Glass bottles of milk here every Tuesday morning although I forgot to put the bottles out last week so we have way too many.

whiteroseredrose · 18/05/2020 20:14

We signed up with the modern milkman in January because the oat milk is in a glass milk bottle.

We get orange juice (in a milk bottle and oat milk on Tuesday Thursday and Saturday and butter and eggs for DH on a Saturday.

We occasionally get real coffee in a tin that you put out with the milk bottles too.

They used to do washing up liquid in a milk bottle too (with plunger) but sadly that's stopped.

QuixoticQuokka · 18/05/2020 20:20

We did but the milk kept being stolen. It was delivered around midnight and empty bottles gone but no milk at 6am on a few occasions so I cancelled. Now we collect raw milk, kefir and yogurt once a week from our local dairy instead.

GinnyStrupac · 18/05/2020 20:48

We have seldom had milk stolen by humans but cats and blue tits can be an occasional hazard.
