Do you have a milkman/woman?

I'd always bought milk from the supermarket or local shops if I was running low but when Covid hit and I couldn't get an online delivery, I signed up with the local dairy. It's been great. They only deliver three times a week whereas it was daily when I was a child. They sell milks, cream, eggs, juice and another local dairy also does bread.

I'd have never done this if it wasn't for covid and it's got me wondering if others have done the same?

Yes - we buy milk from Ocado but the milk man supplements it twice a week. Also Orange juice. Started it during Covid,

I love the milk man milk.. as it’s so fresh It makes an amazing froth on my coffee, even the skimmed which is normally rank!

Yep, we started at beginning of lockdown too and I plan to carry it on. I hate that annoying moment when you make a cuppa and then go to the fridge only to realise there’s no milk left! Doesn’t happen any more!

I would also carry on using the milkman as I feel a sense of loyalty to him now for helping us out at what was a very busy time for him - he’s a one man band and I’ve been very impressed with his other offerings too such as bread, cheese, juice, eggs etc. It’s a nice little almost old-fashioned ritual to have a milk delivery I think.

We’ve had two deliveries a week since we moved here about 3 years ago. God send at Christmas and now during Covid as deliver juice, yoghurts, eggs , bread etc.

We've started using the milkman too. He delivers four times a week. We're getting eggs from him too, could get OJ but we don't drink it.

We forgot to shake the whole milk the first time!Grin

We're also getting a veg box once or twice a week (can choose contents, it's not random root veg) and meat roughly every other week.

Other stuff available online ... we've not had to go to a shop since before lockdown started.m

I briefly did but I had to sack them. I feel bad because I think he was trying to do the business on the side of another job. This meant though that he delivered late in the evening rather than early morning.
He was delivering from midnight onwards (if I heard him i would end up getting out of bed to get it). Or it would end up sitting there for 7 hours+, I had some lumpy milk once.
The final straw was when they wouldn’t let us cancel for a week away and they would still have to deliver! Nope

MilkshakeandFries · 18/05/2020 21:16

Yes, it's about double the price of supermarket milk so I have half and half to reduce my plastic usage and to support local.

We also have meat deliveries from the local butcher which again are slightly more (in line with Waitrose meat prices) but the quality is so amazing that it's totally worth it.

Doryhunky · 18/05/2020 21:19

Yes because it comes in glass bottles! Very flexible and convenient and worth the extra cost.

bringincrazyback · 18/05/2020 21:21

We've been using Milk&More for a couple of years now. It's really handy having milk delivered although I do miss glass bottles, they deliver in the normal sized cartons.

bringincrazyback · 18/05/2020 21:23

Yes, our milkman comes 3 times a week

And then he delivers the milk. (Sorry, couldn't resist 😁)

AvoidingRealHumans · 18/05/2020 21:26

I had one for ages but last summer they kept coming late (they state before 8am) so the milk was on the step in the heat all day as we had left for work/school.

I had to cancel it sadly but I did love it.

I've used one for over 20 years, always feeling slightly guilty about the comparative expense. But when I had 4 kids at home drinking milk like water it was invaluable. Now I'm even more grateful for it - it's just one less thing to have to remember.

TiggeryBear · 18/05/2020 21:29

We have a milkman (it's my Dad 😊) we get all sorts; milk, bread, juice, fruit & veg. It's saved me loads as I'm not going to the shops for bread & doing the inevitable spend more on stuff chocolates & doughnuts that I don't need 😬😂

Quornflakegirl · 18/05/2020 21:31

Yes for the last 4 years. We get 12 bottles or organic whole milk delivered 3 times a a week. It is 89p a bottle so not cheap but the milk tastes delicious and it is a handy service.
We get 2 bottles of orange juice and 2 loaves of bread a week too.

BikeRunSki · 18/05/2020 21:37

We’ve had a milkman for about 15 years. We live 3 miles from the farm our milk comes from, and not much further from several more dairy farms. Our milkman also brings local eggs, local yoghurt (made locally, but is a brand sold nationally) and juice. One of the other local farms makes cheese which can be delivered with your milk. We get bread from the bakery, although they don’t deliver.

whojamaflip · 18/05/2020 21:40

Yes local dairy - arrives with the milk at 4.30am 3 times a week. Proper milk with the cream on the top in glass bottles.

We were actually milking our own cows until 5 years ago when we had to pack up for financial reasons so were spoilt for years just being able to walk down and fill the milk jugs direct from the bulk tank - the local dairy milks jersey cows and the cream has to be seen to be believed! They also do cream and butter and during lockdown have been happy to pick up other bits for people who are self isolating.

123456abcd · 18/05/2020 21:42

Yes..and no! Started about a year ago and had to give up after 3-4 months as delivery was so inconsistent - lots of missed deliveries.

ToothFairyNemesis · 18/05/2020 21:43

We signed up week before lockdown.

ScarfLadysBag · 18/05/2020 21:43

Yes we do! Milk, eggs, yoghurt and orange juice. They come twice a week. More expensive than supermarket but I prefer it (and get weirdly excited when I open the door and there's stuff there Grin)

ScarfLadysBag · 18/05/2020 21:48

We spend about a tenner a week, but DD drinks a lot of milk as she's only 15mo so we get a lot of blue milk and a bit of semi-skimmed for me and DH. It also includes 12 eggs from local farm, a couple of pints of orange juice and a big tub of yoghurt. So not so bad, really, although more expensive than supermarket.

Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 18/05/2020 21:49

Yes - have had milk and juice delivered in bottles twice a week for over a year. Also, since lockdown, I get fish/bread/veg delivered from the fishman once a week. Will keep all the deliveries up after lockdown ends. Between the deliveries and the local butcher/baker I only need to go to the supermarket once a month for tins etc.

soundsystem · 18/05/2020 21:49

Yep! We had ours since before COVID but we've increased the quantities and frequency of deliveries now that we're all at home all the time (family of 5).

We get milk, orange juice, bread and eggs, and every now and then a HUGE sack of potatoes.

Ours does loads of stuff, including oat milk in glass bottles, specialty coffee and fancy sourdough loaves, as well as the usual stuff. Oh and bags of compost! And tins of Roses at Christmas!

AlCalavicci · 18/05/2020 21:53

I have been using a milkman for years , I get 3 pints of milk a pint of grapefruit juice and half a doz eggs each week for about a fiver .
they sell all the normal dairy stuff and bread , some biscuits, a few types of cat and dog food .
They also have a lottery for £1 per week, i think you can win up to £100
Due to covid they have had to change things a bit but before hand I could make any changes to my order up to 9pm the night before it is due and they deliver 6 days a week
Now I have to give them 24 hrs notice and they only deliver 3 days a week to my area and the other 3 days to the next district , which to be fair I still think is a bloody good deal .

CurbsideProphet · 18/05/2020 21:54

We've had our milk delivered for nearly 3 years. It's delivered by the farm in glass bottles and saves us money, plus massively reduces our plastic usage Smile

MurrayTheMonk · 18/05/2020 21:57

Yes me! Got milkman when were in SI for 14 days. I love it! We get milk, yoghurt, juice and smoothy (in glass bottles). Once we also had bread and some kitchen roll! And some fancy cheese.
