What will you no longer spend money on post-lockdown?

I've had a bit of a wake up call, as i am lucky that my bank account is a lot healthier right now.

I normally work in London and fritter tonnes away on coffee, Pret lunches and random odd things from TK Maxx each week.

I'm shocked at what I've wasted.

Whenever / if ever we can go back, I'm definitely not buying lunch or coffee every day again.

Anyone else the same?,

Hair cuts for the males in our household. I feel like a professional now :)

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/05/2020 20:06

Take out coffee and cake definitely

I think I viewed it as a treat.

The reality is they are high in calories and stupidly priced.

Undies1990 · 14/05/2020 20:07

Yes, haircuts! My DD has trimmed my hair very successfully and I've trimmed my DH and DS hair. We all look fine and have saved a fortune! Amazing what you can teach yourself on You Tube!

Coffee. Have a coffee machine at home and it’s better!

Dollywilde · 14/05/2020 20:10

I’m also committing to break my Pret habit Grin I do wonder if 95% of those saying they will stop buying lunch will crack within the first month back though! (Sorry OP!)

It’s a strange time for me as I’m starting mat leave at the beginning of July so don’t reckon I’ll be back to the office for another year. I’ll definitely be cutting back on the amount I spend at the pub after work but that’s due to other factors!

Becclescake · 14/05/2020 20:12

Costa coffee - was spending about £60 p/m on these! Crap from the 24hr Tesco before work, just a waste of money.

Dinosforall · 14/05/2020 20:14

I'll probably spend even more on lunch since I've got used to having something decent every day instead of a crappy sandwich...

Rainb0w · 14/05/2020 20:15

Cheap clothes just for the sake of it I'm going to spend a little more on quality

Bluewavescrashing · 14/05/2020 20:16

I never really spent much on coffee out as we have a nespresso machine and I prefer those. 30p a cup so more expensive than instant but much nicer.

Pub meals out - quite possibly will cut these out. We would normally combine lunch with a walk in the countryside but during lock down we've enjoyed walking for its own sake. I either cook a big breakfast or lunch and we go out after that, full up! Pub lunch is quite often mediocre anyway and I can rustle up a burger and chips at home quite easily.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 14/05/2020 20:17

I now know I can do a weekly shop (actually 2-weekly in the lockdown but going back to “normal”/ work it’ll be weekly) and not buy small top up shops in the week. I wasted so much money Blush

shartsi · 14/05/2020 20:19

Probably gym membership cos I have enjoyed outdoor exercise. However I need it for the winter months

mynamesmrdiggety · 14/05/2020 20:25

Going to spend loads more on takeaway coffee and pret lunches as that's what I can't have now! Less on clothes though

CoronaIsComing · 14/05/2020 20:26

Hopefully DH will cut back on the Costas. We’ve bought a coffee machine and he’s going to be WFH 2 days a week. Sometimes, when he was WFH, he’d go out, buy a Costa and come home 😵.

I’ll cut back on the Morrison’s meal deals, although I do think they’re good value for money and I love the box with the smoked salmon, salad and new potatoes! Maybe I’ll treat myself once a week.

We’ll cut back on crappy entertainment for the sake of it like trampoline places for DS. And hopefully on travelling to these places. We’ll instead focus on outdoor activities such as mountain biking and paddle boarding. Although we won’t cut back on going to ChillFactor as our holiday was cancelled at Easter 😭.

We’ll have to cut back on takeaways as we’re moving to the middle of nowhere and nothing’s on JustEat 😂 but the local pub is meant to be very good and it’s handily located at the end of our tiny new build estate.

I’ll cut back on petrol as we’re moving closer to my work.

SpiderPlantSally · 14/05/2020 20:26

I am amazed at how much less we have spent in lockdown. Obviously some of it is to do with travel to and from work, and convenience foods when I'm too tired to cook, but I didn't realise how all those "treat coffees and cake" at the weekends add up. £20 here, £20 there. They'll be out the window, as well as male haircuts. Oh and razor blades for DH too, with his new look Smile.
I do miss Waitrose trips though; it's not conveniently located to visit right now, but that's one treat I won't be knocking on the head now and again.

LadyLeucadia · 14/05/2020 20:27

Lunches, shoes and handbags.

Samtsirch · 14/05/2020 20:28

On the go snacks and drinks.
The mountains of tat I used to buy in charity shops, I will just make donations instead, my house looks so much better for being de cluttered.

EvolvingElle · 14/05/2020 20:31

Another one for haircuts!

I’ve totally found my calling with dh and 3 ds’s...never done it before but they look exactly the same as when they step out of the barbers!

Also cut my own hair (pony under your chin method) and that was also a success!

FuckThisWind · 14/05/2020 20:33

Was never a big spender anyway, but I've cancelled the gym membership. Walking is better plus fresh air. I will walk to places I used to drive to.

But the big one for me is haircuts and hair colours. It cost me a pound to do my own hair. As opposed to paying my stylist £50 every 4 weeks. I could barely afford it anyway. And I used to give tips to the stylist and the junior. I'm a supermarket worker on minimum wage. Sorry, hairdressers, but it has made me realise that nobody has ever thought to tip me!

Ohffs66 · 14/05/2020 20:36

Takeaway pizza and sushi. We've upskilled ourselves and realised how much money we can save on these! We've also bought a treadmill so DH prob won't go back to the gym. And I can cut my own fringe pretty well which I have never attempted before .

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 14/05/2020 20:36

Ive spent WAY more during lockdown! Mostly on random rubbish from Amazon

EinsteinaGogo · 14/05/2020 20:37

@Dollywilde - that's my fear - that I'm too weak!!!

OP posts:
FantailsFly · 14/05/2020 20:38

Commuting to work (hopefully) and all the associated costs - lunches, coffees, nice shoes ...

RaininSummer · 14/05/2020 20:40

Another one for haircuts. Quite pleased with my attempt.

Tiramisuiloveyou · 14/05/2020 20:45

We are saving a fortune apart from on our grocery shopping bill which has gone through the roof with two teens and two adults at home for every meal. We are both hoping to continue WFH for as long as poss or at least continue to WFH pt to save on fuel coffees and lunches. Also going to knock coffees and cake out in town on a weekend on the head.

TildaTurnip · 14/05/2020 20:45

Midweek top up shops. We have sent more on our weekly shopping (well more like every 10 days) but think the top ups we used to do must have added up to much more.
