What will you no longer spend money on post-lockdown?

I've had a bit of a wake up call, as i am lucky that my bank account is a lot healthier right now.

I normally work in London and fritter tonnes away on coffee, Pret lunches and random odd things from TK Maxx each week.

I'm shocked at what I've wasted.

Whenever / if ever we can go back, I'm definitely not buying lunch or coffee every day again.

Anyone else the same?,

Coffee, I was getting one most mornings on the way into work. Adds up to a small fortune Blush since lockdown I've dusted off my coffee machine and been using that.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/05/2020 20:49

Yes @TildaTurnip ! I have also realised that it LOOKS like I'm spending more on food, but I actually am spending a lot less, in those "quick nip ins" were you buy loads of extra bits of crap you don't need

Sunny345H · 14/05/2020 20:53

Gym membership. I've been searching youtube for online workput videos ansld doing them in the living room. I actually enjoy it much more than the gym and can fit it around everyday life.

I haven't actually figured out what it is I spend my money on but whatever it is comes to around £500/month. I have a bad habit of popping to a shop for one thing and coming out with 5.

brakethree · 14/05/2020 21:00

Great post OP but I'm the opposite to everyone! I won't be cutting back on haircuts anytime soon - cut DS's hair with trimmers, OMG poor boy, I'm taking his lovely barber a bunch of flowers. Mine is 3 colour foils to cover grey, will be back in the chair as soon as I can. Really miss my gym classes but have paid annually anyway. Agree with eating out though, although I had already stopped eating in pubs as I can cook better at home, am happy to pay more for a good restaurant though. Agree with other poster re clothes. I'm going to get some good quality items from now on plus invest in some nice gym gear.

EinsteinaGogo · 14/05/2020 21:04

@brakethree - your poor DS 😂😂😂

My hair is also something I can't wait to get back too... I can get by without the cut, but the foils are a different matter. My roots will be down to my ears by July 😱😱😱

The gym. Turns out there's an App for that! Actually a few.

I will be cancelling all my TV subscriptions after this because I don't think I will ever watch TV again, it's soooo boring now. I was enjoying some binge watches initially but now I can't be bothered to even watch the shows I like best.

I will be going to the hairdressers ASAP. I would love to have a spray tan, nails done, eyelashes, eyebrows, waxing etc. Too. Just stop feeling like a crap DIY project basically.

I won't be buying coffees out, or anymore takeaways. I will be having some nice meals out though.

FizzyPink · 14/05/2020 21:26

I’ve been having my nails done every 3 weeks for the last 10 years and actually haven’t minded having short bare nails. I dread to think how much that habit was costing me Blush

CoolShoeshine · 14/05/2020 22:59

Bloody Boots meal deals - £3.30ish per day because I couldn’t be arsed to pack lunch. Never again.
Also shopping at the supermarket for a whole week’s worth of food has taught me tgst if I have food in the house to cook and use up I won’t be tempted by takeaways.

ScreamingKid · 14/05/2020 23:03

Posh restaurants. Not that we went often of course, but I just can't imagine spending that on a meal now.

Coffees. To think we would spend £5 on two coffees whilst we walked the dogBlush

Ifonlywecouldwishuponastar · 14/05/2020 23:08

I used to have daily spending in the co op just buying crap like chocolate and Diet Coke on the way home from work. I also didn't realise how much I used to spend in town on toiletries and make up. I think lockdown is teaching me what I really need to what I really 'want'.

Sarcelle · 14/05/2020 23:11

I have saved so much money in the last two months. Paid off my credit card too.

Apart from supermarket runs once a week, and a few cosmetics/toiletries, kindle books (daily deal ones so cheap) and a cheese grater, I have spent nothing.

I will only do one supermarket shop a week from now on, and stop the mindless shopping to ward off boredom. I don't miss shops.

LizzieLoafer · 14/05/2020 23:20

DrinkFeckArseGirls Same here, usually spend a fortune doing daily shops when you add it up. Nipping in for a few bits costs me around £30 nearly every day.

This once a week lark is much better. I just can't be arsed with the queuing and hassle of shopping now so I'm spending half of what I used to.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 14/05/2020 23:24

Snacks and nibbles out and about
Take away tea
Soft play
Expensive days out generally
Dd's Ballet lessons. (Sorry DD: but they cost a bomb, I bought them to satisfy your passing whim and your not really that into them!)

ssd · 14/05/2020 23:26

I'm not a big spender at all but I've realised that I was spending too much on food.
I'm only shopping once a week now, none of the popping in all the time anymore.

womanthatfelltoearth · 14/05/2020 23:30

Daily Starbucks on the way to work - now that I know I can froth milk in a cafetière!

For those cutting hair for DH etc are you using clippers and if so which ones. My DH is starting to look la little "disheveled"...

StarShapedWindow · 14/05/2020 23:35

The dog groomer, I’ve cut my dogs hair and it looks better than the groomer’s job, we pay £45.00 normally. I’ve also cut DH and DS’s hair and both look good but I can only do one style so they’ll probably go back to the barbers. Also the DC are finally using all the craft/stationary I’ve bought over the past 10 years and we’ve got loads, so I’ll stop buying that until we actually need something.

EinsteinaGogo · 14/05/2020 23:35

@ScreamingKid - I'm so with that. We'd spend £60+ at least once a week at a -nice-but-not-that-special burger place near us. £15 at a bar first, then £45 for two mains and two beers.

That's nearly £250 a month and we were usually home by 10.00.. bloody ridiculous now I look back.

OP posts:
StarShapedWindow · 14/05/2020 23:37

Womanthatfelltoearth - trimmers are great, but I used a beard trimmer because it’s all we had 😅

Legoandloldolls · 14/05/2020 23:37

I'm going to buy less clothes on a whim and properly think about winter / spring / summer to check the kids clothes and clear out/ fill gaps only at those points ( I wish - hope!)

During lockdown I have realised that some of my kids have too much they never wear, two have nothing that fit and I cant buy shoes. I need a system! So no more wondering into clothes shops on a whim

caringcarer · 14/05/2020 23:41

During lockdown I have coloured and cut my own hair and bought clippers for cutting dh and ds hair and it all looks ok. I thimk i will just carry on doing it myself and save money.

WarmSausageTea · 14/05/2020 23:48

Tesco shopping - probably not completely, but I’d like to reduce our trips there by 90% from what they were pre-lockdown.

We’ve found local food suppliers and producers who deliver, and with a couple of trips to the local Co-op a month, we’ve avoided big supermarkets altogether. I suspect that we could save money by going to Tesco, but I feel really good about supporting local businesses and eating local produce.

tectonicplates · 14/05/2020 23:55

Not only did I waste far too much money at Pret, but also during the lockdown I've lost half a stone of weight! We've done a food shop once a week, and there's nowhere to buy snacks as all the cafes are closed.

I've been paying my yoga teacher who's been teaching online, as I really like her, but apart from that there'll be no more yoga studios or trendy gyms for me. I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago about how often I spend half the class secretly hating everyone for being thinner than me, so not only will I save a load of money, I'll also feel happier, too. I've been doing some exercise videos online and it's going well.

quarentini · 14/05/2020 23:59

I have shopped once every 2 weeks so won't be going back to top up shops.
I've bought no new make up or skincare.ive been using up everything I've got and won't be running out anytime soon.
Won't be buying any new clothes as holidays have been cancelled.

packetandtripe · 15/05/2020 00:02

takeaways ironically, we've ordered one about 3 times in 8 weeks. I'll never waste so much food again. But the haircuts I have 3 hairy males to do this week and the clippers all ready to go. They are all ok with tight haircuts (I mean at 6 and 9 you trust your mam anyway! not so much the DH who has to be seen) so any tips most welcome - like 1 blade all round and a higher number on top?
