What will you no longer spend money on post-lockdown?

I've had a bit of a wake up call, as i am lucky that my bank account is a lot healthier right now.

I normally work in London and fritter tonnes away on coffee, Pret lunches and random odd things from TK Maxx each week.

I'm shocked at what I've wasted.

Whenever / if ever we can go back, I'm definitely not buying lunch or coffee every day again.

Anyone else the same?,

erm well not a lot really as i am pretty tight and don't buy a lot of unnecessary stuff. i have developed a strong craving for plants though our house and garden are filling up/i will probably keep buying more.

SophieJo · 16/05/2020 20:05

Holidays abroad. Have no intention of spending any time at an airport or on a plane for x number of hours for a very long time.

Boltouttheblue · 16/05/2020 23:01

We've not bought anything other than food since the beginning of lockdown. Post lockdown it'll be the same as DH will shortly be made redundant in August. So no coffee and cake, eating out, meal deals for lunch, constant top up shops in Tesco, clothes for DH and I, random house bits etc.
DTD's do need some summer/winter clothes, school shoes, winter coats as well as birthday presents in early Autumn but beyond real essentials I'm hoping to keep our spending to the bare minimum until DH finds another job.

Holidays, for the foreseeable future Sad.

purpleme12 · 16/05/2020 23:12

I'll spend it on the same things. I miss my life so much and I miss the fun we had just by going to my child's activities and going to cafes and days out and being out. Endless sludge now and you see is pictures of fun on Facebook

Polkadotties · 16/05/2020 23:17

Getting my nails done. I’ve bought my own lamp, gels, products etc and will continue doing my own

SpiritEssence · 17/05/2020 00:30

Hairdressers for dd. Saving her a lot of money as shes impressed with my efforts in cutting n colouring it and doing an crazy colour on her ends. I must admit tho i did hairdressing at college a long time ago but I can remember to do roots and a basic layered hair cut. Grin just my hair I colour but cant cut it

LadyWithLapdog · 17/05/2020 01:00

We’re both reducing our hours so have to halve our outgoings. Hair dye, cut and nails will go, also Sky. Not renewing various subscriptions or regular small payments to charities. Just more mindful in general.

FrenchFancie · 17/05/2020 07:40

I have a list of local restaurants and coffee shops I want to go to - nearly all locally owned. I am worried about how they are / have coped and want to spend money with them to support them so I am very much looking forward to them opening!

Passthecake30 · 17/05/2020 07:55

I’ll be another one attempting to continue to meal plan and avoid top up shops, as there is other more interesting things to do than go to a supermarket! Plus it’s good for the rest of the family too, to know that they eat what’s there rather than expect their favourites to be topped up.
Some of my supermarket subs have been cheaper, own brand varieties and I’ll be sticking to them, as they have been fine.
I won’t let DD (10) out her clothes in the wash as often - during lockdown she’s been known to wear the same clothes for a couple of days so no more clean clothes after 1hr?!!
I’ve been enjoying you tube work outs so will continue with them, and consider cancelling the gym.

1moreRep · 17/05/2020 08:07

going out for meals, drinks etc especially as a family. i don't miss it and have saved.

we will entertain our friends at our home more as we have missed that the most.

i cut down on clothes this year, i will continue to buy in bulk cat supplies from amazon

coffees will be bought from independent places not costa as there is no way i'm giving them up

i'm going to cancel my new luxury gym membership as i don't need it and oy joined for the spa, yet have invested in a hot tub during lockdown

ill keep training at my sport thou

Pepperwand · 17/05/2020 08:16

I bought some eyebrow dye and tinted them myself, cost about £7 for a kit that will last me more than a year and they look good!

I'll spend less on random lunches out for the sake of it e.g grabbing lunch from Costa because I can't be bothered making something at home but more on going out for nice meals at pubs and restaurants. Basically better quality, less frequently.

beautifulmonument · 17/05/2020 08:21

Might be wishful thinking but hopefully make-up. I'm loving not wearing it, not worrying about it sinking into pores and wrinkles, not worrying about my mascara rubbing off on my eyelids, saving so much time in the mornings and just having a clean face. My colleagues are used to seeing me un made up on Teams now...
I'm not sure if I'll be brave enough to go back to the office without it though!

Zenithbear · 17/05/2020 08:23

Window cleaner - we've done a good job ourselves and it didn't take long.
Less meals out - honestly not worth the money most of the time. Probably go for Sunday lunch now and again.
Less haircuts for both of us. Maybe twice a year in future with DIY in between.
Highlights for me - my hair is now a lovely silvery colour and I've made the decision to accept it.
We will start spending on holidays, swimming and going out to the pub and gigs/festivals asap though.
I will spend about the same on clothes as I cut down a few years ago but definitely no more shopping in big centres - shopping locally and online has been great and no trudging about or expensive parking.

VaselineOnToast · 17/05/2020 08:37

Hopefully commuting. The cost is insane for me and my husband, and I only work part-time. We've been putting all our "extra" money in savings and towards paying off some home refurbishment that we couldn't afford outright before.

Aside from that, we are pretty frugal otherwise, out of necessity. I've cut my own hair for years, rarely drink takeaway coffee/tea, and bring my own lunch to work most days.

thecatsthecats · 17/05/2020 09:14

I don't tend to view money spent on take out food etc as wasted.

I stick a big chunk of my wages in my pension and another lump in my savings, and all the bills money away too.

What's left isn't wasted, it's spent. Sometimes on silly things, sometimes on things that make my life easier.

I don't consider making my life easier to be money wasted.

I think if I wasn't locked down right now I'd be struggling to be honest - too much going on at work, but I can keep on top of it with the travelling etc removed.

Ihavenoidewhatsgoingon · 17/05/2020 09:21

Cancelling my gym membership - much prefer being outside - love seeing the changes in the seasons

Will try to buy less clothes and to buy sustainable ones when I do

Growing vegetables in pots and menu planning / making things from scratch - less random buying of stuff because it’s there

Not buying things on impulse when I am out shopping just because it catches my eye

Will spend more on meeting up with friends - but will narrow down the friends I spend time

TravellingSpoon · 17/05/2020 09:25

I feel for all those small business out there, hairdressers for example, who are going v to be losing a large amount if their client base if this thread is anything to go by.

We've saved so much since lockdown although DH has had a paycut so it's not all good. However we've always saved a lot as we paid off our mortgage last year and don't have cars on finance, etc. I for one, can't wait to get back to our old life (whenever that will be...) and so will be back to spending on:

Coffee - I like my weekly trips to Nero
Gym - I need the machines there, HIIT workouts are ok but not the same
Beauty - My foils need doing and my eyebrows need threading!
Shopping - I like to browse and try on not order everything online
Meals out - I don't want to cook at home all the time
Bars - I miss getting dressed up and going out!

MrsJBaptiste · 17/05/2020 09:44

@TravellingSpoon I think that for every person now colouring their at home, there will be 10 people desperate to get to the hairdressers.

I also think that many people do find it hard to change. They'll bypass Costa for a week or two and then get back into the habit of that coffee before work or that Pret sandwich for lunch.

NewYorkIvy · 17/05/2020 10:23

For every person not buying coffees I think there's probably one who will buy more to make up for what they've missed. There was a massive queue outside our local independent coffee shop when they reopened this week for takeaway.

I'm not going back to little top up shops that ended up costing £20/30 a pop. Being at home I'm finding I will use up what we have and look for alternatives rather than go to the shop for one thing.

I've saved a fortune on gig tickets and hotels but that is one thing that I will definitely be making up for as soon as I can.

Salene · 17/05/2020 11:06

Starbucks - realises it's a total rip off and I don't need it

taking my kids out constantly and paying to do stuff . We had plenty of fun just walking and biking.

Bread, I've been making my own and going to keep doing it.

BestIsWest · 17/05/2020 11:18

I miss swimming so I’ll be resuming my gym membership. I also miss going to our favourite coffee shop a couple of times a week. I’ll be buying less clothes but better quality.

Hair - I’ll still be getting it cut but now I have an inch and a half of grey, I’m going to stop getting it dyed.

Dog groomer - I’m going to have a go myself today.

thecatsthecats · 17/05/2020 12:58

I also think that many people do find it hard to change. They'll bypass Costa for a week or two and then get back into the habit of that coffee before work or that Pret sandwich for lunch.

There's also the time factor.

It's quicker to do your own haircut, and you don't need to make an appointment.

It's not usually quicker to make your own sandwich than it is to buy one from a shop, and people will have less time when they're commuting again. I can see people saving themselves money, but falling back into habits that save them time.

I definitely can't wait to get the gym back, as no way could I afford the variety of machines.

As it is, I'm having the barista come to me by travelling van Grin
