Can we have an "OMG I can't believe I never realised that!" thread?

Mine is Sandie Shaw. I can't believe it had never occurred to me until tonight that her name is a play on Sandy Shore.

I thought that the George Ezra song ‘Shotgun’ was about a horse called Shotgun Who he rode underneath the hot sun. I envisaged a spaghetti Western style scene... 😳

Also for years as a child I’d literally say ‘when’. Adults found it hilarious and I didn’t know why.

Iirc everyone in our extended family said 'when' when sufficient had been poured ... didn't everyone? (And yes, we knew it was a sort of joke).

@BlossomingTulip female hyenas do not have penises - they have a very long clitoris that does look like a penis. They give birth through their clitoris.

Shockers · 12/05/2020 14:18

Bloody hell @WhenItIsOver Sad. I won’t ever buy leather again.

TheNightKing · 12/05/2020 14:19

A number of fish can change gender including clown fish.

Shockers · 12/05/2020 14:19

When I buy seed potatoes, I buy them as new potato varieties.

WhenItIsOver · 12/05/2020 14:27

@Shockers, I think that was the intention of the person that wrote that webpage, however other comments on this thread seem to disagree that it is true so maybe do some more research before making a decision.

I've always done this, most people I know do literally say "when". That's the joke.

I have just realised that if Russia fired rockets at the USA (which was my huge worry as a kid in the 70's) they would not have to fly over Europe & cross the Atlantic
Omg! How have I managed to get to 66 years old without knowing this 🤭
And CraftyGardener 😳 re Took me 5 seasons of Ru Paul's drag race to clock what they meant with charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent
Not to mention that the Paralympics aren’t for just paralysed athletes.....

I need a G+T!!

I knew that one!
Grin
(My obsession with google maps has finally paid off lol, Russial and the USA are really close.
Russia and Alaska practically touch at one point, they're that close.

Cruddles · 12/05/2020 15:09

Aren't they joined by ice during the year? I'm sure I've seen something about Innuit going back and forth across the border on sleds

ErrolTheDragon · 12/05/2020 15:28

That's reminded me of a geography one - I was surprised when we watched Occupied last year (good Norwegian political thriller) that Norway has a land border with Russia and it was feasible for a Norwegian character to get to Murmansk (by skidoo or suchlike, courtesy of a Sámi reindeer herder, they're allowed to follow their herds over the border).
I'd not realised it went up and over Finland, which only has a coast on the Baltic side not the Barents Sea.

ememem84 · 12/05/2020 15:32

@Cruddles I think they are. I’m sure it’s the bearing strait which freezes over at its narrowest point. If memory serves there was a show on tv ages ago about teams racing from us to Russia over the strait. They had to get to it before it defrosted.

I thought God was called Peter for quite a long time....because in church when they say 'Thanks be to God' I.l thought they were saying 'Thanks Peter God...' and God was his surname ShockGrin

I'm still not getting the knot one Blush

cannockcandy · 12/05/2020 16:42

I never thought Timbuktu and Tipperary were real places.
As a child i never knew the icons on playing cards were the same number as the number on the card. Played cards a tonne when i was a kid and just never picked up on it.
Also never knew how hyperbole was written down, although I did use the word a lot.
During Uni I was speaking to a lecturer about modernity but, thanks to a Fall song, pronounced it modern inity, que my lecturer dying of laughter.
I knew about cocoa beans because of Minecraft lol

chergar · 12/05/2020 16:47

I've probably got loads but @user1495884620 reminded me of the song Closer by The Chainsmokers, I thought they were singing about a Rover, like a Rover 400 until DS informed me it was a Range Rover

Graphista · 12/05/2020 17:57

Mine is that when I first moved to this country I thought Del Boy and Inspector Frost were played by two different actors

Some actors are particularly good at this.

My favourite and imo a massively underrated actor is Vincent d'onofrio

Most people know him from full metal jacket, law and order and men in black, what they're shocked by is that he's also the mechanic in Adventures in babysitting (he's VERY buff with long blonde hair in it) and kingpin in daredevil

I've had very heated debates with people who refuse to believe it's the same actor.

It's not just a change in appearance but gait, arm movements, way he holds his head all sorts

Justtakeatowel · 12/05/2020 18:41

I took my children in the woods to check their dandelion knowledge, thankfully their plant recognition skills were spot on!!

Rebelwithallthecause · 12/05/2020 19:00

My DH was just trying to find dandelion clocks for DS

DS was holding a yellow one.

All of a sudden DH says we need to find some dandelions.

I exclaimed that DS was in fact holding a dandelion and DH quickly pretended he knew that (but he definitely didn’t) Grin

xsquared · 12/05/2020 19:12

James Spader was in Mannequin as slimy Richards.

NeedToKnow101 · 12/05/2020 19:21

@ChangeThePassword
Yes. In Scotland we like to make use of having an R in a word. It seems pointless to have it and not use it.
😂😂 Of course! Thank you.

ChangeThePassword · 12/05/2020 19:28

xsquared, that reminds me - it took me a long time to realise that Chewetel Ejiofor from 12 Years a Salve also played Lola in Kinky Boots. Two VERY different roles!

ChangeThePassword · 12/05/2020 19:31

Need toKnow - where I'm from, shore could even be described as having two syllables. Sho-ar.

Not sure if that's typical throughout Scotland though.
