Inspired by a thread I saw on Twitter, what was yours ? Mine was in 1991 when I was 18, a white Metro X reg (1981) with a bright orange interior. The choke was knackered and the heating didn't work but I loved it.

A 1994 Nissan Micra. I spent all my savings on it and it was a piece of crap that regularly played up and nearly killed me with faulty brakes.

Fabvegetablegrower · 09/05/2020 13:59

A blue Fiat 127 around 1989 loved that car. Grin

T reg 1999
Silver corsa - reg JNY so Jenny.
Did get a little sad, when watching it being driven away on the back of the scrap lorry!

A black Fiat Uno. Horrid little thing. No power, nasty interior, unreliable, rubbish to drive.

My second car was a Peugeot 205 diesel which was in a completely different league. A wonderful little car and a joy to drive.

This. It was about 14th hand and cost 750,000 Lire. I used to go to the junkyard and hack off any spare parts I needed. I could mostly fix things myself, too. The engine was at the back, great for pushing me up mountain roads, and one day the gear stick came off in my hand! I just coasted down the mountain until I ran out of inertia... good job the roads were deserted.
I kept it for three years until I needed back seatbelts for DC1. By then I also knew I could trust myself with a more valuable car.

Red rover metro sport with black trim

Ford Orion, 1.6 fuel injection. Went like a bat out of hell, beloved by boy racers, and I was a young mum. It was known as 'the pepperpot' in the trade. It was a great car.

Sgtmajormummy · 09/05/2020 14:11

THIS was the “more expensive car”.Grin

MG Metro in 1987 - white - got it plus small amount of cash as part of a split up settlement with ex BF - he got the house but I didn't care - so glad to get shot of him 🙄

A Morris Traveller which had to be scrapped cos the wood was growing mushrooms. Replaced by a WV Beetle which I had for 16 years and had to anticipate emergency stops in. Another car with character. Now got a Skoda which always starts and gets me from A to B but not so much fun.

CakeCakeCake21 · 09/05/2020 14:17

My first and only car is a Ford Focus, bought the day after my first son was born in 2007 and still going strong now he is 12 and a half.
When I was a teenager I used to drive my mum’s VW Polo, which had a tape player. We were so dazzled by the sophistication of this when it first arrived that we used to sit in the car while it was parked outside listening to tapes (and draining the car battery presumably).

ImDillDandin · 09/05/2020 14:21

A blue mini, very old, in 1981. The choke was held with a wooden peg and the window wash was pump action 😄. If I let the petrol run low, muck from the petrol tank was sucked into the fuel pipe and the engine would stop, so I had to learn how to dismantle the float chamber, blow it through and reassemble quickly as I usually stopped on a busy road or a roundabout.

Love all the tales of much loved old bangers

I got my first car in 2000. It was a 1984 B reg VW Polo Classic (like the picture). It had a temperamental automatic choke and no power assist on the brakes but I loved it. I had it for 4 years and drove all over the country in it.

Ahhh, 1992, I was 17, an old W reg mini clubman, was falling to bits but was my pride and joy, spent every penny I earned keeping it running, had a manual choke, top speed of about 50mph and filled up empty to full with £12 😂

Drogonssmile · 09/05/2020 16:21

A D reg mini (classic old one) in gold. Brilliant car, like driving a roller skate!

Nat6999 · 09/05/2020 16:25

1998 a Blue K reg 1.8 diesel Ford Fiesta ex police car, my dad's friend got it me from the auctions, I learned to drive in it & kept it for 6 months after I passed my test, I loved it.

TwelfthOfNever · 09/05/2020 16:37

I'm fairly sure threads like this on twitter are largely social engineering to harvest answers to online service security check questions... Grin

Who was your favourite teacher? What was the first gig you went to? What's your mother's maiden name (usually as a "your porn star name is your mother's maiden name and the last item of household cleaning fluid you bought")?

Gotta be careful out there folks. At least here it's not linked to your actual name!

Somanysocks · 09/05/2020 16:46

Antique gold (khaki) mini. Got it in 1987 and it was preloved then. I loved it, no radio so had to take a ghettoblaster with me on the passenger seat and because I drove up to London every weekend it drank a whole bottle of oil each week. Oh, and the roof leaked when it rained.

Good memories.

Kez200 · 09/05/2020 17:56

Mine was a Fiesta and the only car I made a profit on.

Back then literally all young girls seemed to have minis. I was looking for a mini for about £600 and they were far older than a Fiesta. So I bought a newer Fiesta and for only £400.

A couple of years later I was selling my Fiesta and it seemed to have become the favourite car for young drivers! I sold it for £600.

That was the only vehicle Ive ever made a profit on (except a campervan which doesnt count really)
