Inspired by a thread I saw on Twitter, what was yours ? Mine was in 1991 when I was 18, a white Metro X reg (1981) with a bright orange interior. The choke was knackered and the heating didn't work but I loved it.

A light blue Morris Minor, circa 1960, which I bought in 1974.
Before that, had various cars with ex DH, the first of which was a mini. But that little Boris was all mine.

TowerRingInferno · 08/05/2020 22:29

Ford Puma 1999. I loved that car!

Lolimax · 08/05/2020 22:30

An old style Nissan Micra. 1986. C898HUH. Bloody loved that car. It was my freedom.

TroysMammy · 08/05/2020 22:30

Renault 5 TS. It had high sports seats and being a shortie, if anyone was behind me, it looked like no one was driving the car.

I actually only passed 4 years ago. Was a very late bloomer. I was a nervous wreck while learning to drive. Took 2 years and 4 tests.

Was overjoyed to pass. Went out and bought a 2011 Ford Fiesta. Absolutely loved it......until I realised I could t actually drive it! I passed my test in a manual, however let loose on my own, I just couldn’t get the hang of the clutch. No matter what I did, I just couldn’t do it. The more I tried the worse I got, until I ended up a nervous wreck.

I would stall on every single hill, or even slight inclines. I once sat at a set of traffic lights that long (on a hill) that the traffic lights changed 4 times. I’ve never been so stressed in my life. Thought I was going have to ask the irate bloke behind to get me moving again!

After a few months I gave up and bought a 2011 automatic Corsa. It was a revelation! It was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I could drive anywhere and everywhere stress free. I loved that car but circumstances changed and it was just too small. I now have a new suv, again in auto. Wouldn’t go back to a manual if you paid me. Couldn’t go through that trauma again!

Grey Renault 5. 1986 C plate, I got it in 1994. Bits gradually dropped off it. It had no locks bu the time I px’ed it for a new car.

Stabbitha · 09/05/2020 00:16

N reg Ford escort. Standard 5 door hatch. It had a tape deck and manual windows.

Pimmsypimms · 09/05/2020 00:26

Metallic green Vauxhall Nova....bloody loved that car!!

Osirus · 09/05/2020 01:19

A Land Rover Freelander 2. Maybe not a usual choice of first car but it’s so nice to drive.

barkingfly · 09/05/2020 05:58

Never ask this of a Californian, Lol. I had a 63 Ford Galaxie v 8 427, four door, no FM radio, no heat, and not all the doors worked. I loved that car.

RedRiverShore · 09/05/2020 06:03

A 1974 reg. yellow beetle in the late 80s, I used to have to hold the choke out with a clothes peg as it didn't work properly but I think this was a common problem. I was 30 when I passed my test and loved my little car, you couldn't get much shopping in them though as boot was at front.

zaphodbeeble · 09/05/2020 11:17

@Zomblie I'd have been so jealous of that car !

My first car was a cleo.

MrsPerfect12 · 09/05/2020 11:22

We need an edit button! Clio

Staywithmemyblood · 09/05/2020 11:47

My dad gave me my first car in 1995 - a white 1987 mini advantage (tennis inspired edition). I loved that car 😍

That's not me in the photo btw!

A 1982 Y reg fiesta in a terracotta colour. Loved that car! It had big round spotlights on the front and a huge speaker in the boot. I thought I was the mutts nuts as a 17yo in 1997 Grin

overthi5 · 09/05/2020 11:58

2008 BMW 3 series in 2009. I was 20 and I learnt to drive in it so was actually quite sad when I swapped it - even though I did so for a new one of the same car.

Zomblie · 09/05/2020 12:10

@zaphodbeeble I'm just sad I have no photos of it. It was before phone cameras were really a thing, and definitely before Facebook so I wouldn't have even been able to upload it. I think I may have had a photo on my first phone with a camera but that's long gone now.

I loved that little car, even when the brakes failed one time on the A303, and again when an engine mounting snapped on the M5 and the engine fell out...

I used to barrel around the back roads at stupid speeds believing myself to be completely invincible... now I have an actual fast and powerful car I'm so, so careful because I know I'm not!

Thelnebriati · 09/05/2020 12:13

A Suzuki GT 125, I loved it. Easy to drive and park, cost peanuts to run and insure. I sold it when I had the kids Sad
I can't drive a car at all.

ArbitraryNameChange · 09/05/2020 12:17

A Talbot Samba with no radio, no clutch, an attempt at a gear box and no rear heater.

I'm very confused as to why I loved it so much. It was shite 😁

MsLumley · 09/05/2020 12:24

A G reg navy Ford Fiesta in about 1998. I didn't love it but it did the job and had 5 doors which seemed a bonus at the time when ferrying mates around.

When I got my first proper job I upgraded to a T reg Clio which I absolutely loved. It had electric windows and air conditioning and everything.

zaphodbeeble · 09/05/2020 12:29

I don't know if anyone remembers these little bunny toys sleeping in hammocks ? My Metro had one of those attached to the window

mejon · 09/05/2020 13:43

In 1990/91 mine was a primrose yellow Metro with brown (I think - long time ago!) interior. Can't remember the reg, but it certainly wasn't new. Part-exchanged it eventually for a brand new Seat Ibiza in bright red .

Pipandmum · 09/05/2020 13:47

Fiat Panda, around 1988. Limited edition bright blue.

Popuppippa · 09/05/2020 13:50

Bright yellow Citroen Dyane in 1986. It cost me £400 and was a death trap. The brakes failed once and I had to stop it by driving it into a convenient pile of sand outside my BF's house!

I LOVED that car. I saved every penny myself.
