Why get drunk when you have kids in the house?

Some of you might tell me to keep my nose out.

But scrolling through Facebook today (I really don’t know why I bother seen as it angers me more than it pleases me)

And many couples I know posting their kitchen work tops full of alcohol and how they are going to get drunk today. Couples who have kids.
And obviously it’s lockdown so they are definitely in charge of kids.

It’s taking all my tongue biting not to say something to them. Probably why it makes me let some of the steam off by writing this post. Why would you get drunk when you have kids?

You might say, how do you know they are getting drunk?
Well a couple with a photo of a huge crate of Budweiser and 4 bottles of prosecco amongst spirits are not exactly having a small glass.

It’s neglect.

Well you can't get drunk anywhere else or send your kids anywhere else at the moment Confused

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 08/05/2020 15:18

Because they think it’s fine.

I'd agree with you op. My opinion is very skewed though. I'm teetotal. Previously worked in a pub where parents would sit there getting shit faced all day. Kids would run riot climbing walls. They'd just give them fizzy drinks, crisps and tablets. This was same faces every weekend

user200000000 · 08/05/2020 15:20

Why would you get drunk when you have kids?

Why wouldn't you?

MiniChoc · 08/05/2020 15:22

Why wouldn't you?

Because it's irresponsible, what if someone got ill or hurt?

iklboo · 08/05/2020 15:24

That was a tongue in cheek post from user.

Drivingdownthe101 · 08/05/2020 15:25

FFS. They might have all that alcohol, doesn’t mean they’re going to sit and drink it all in one session. I could take a picture of the 18 bottles of wine I’ve just had delivered. I’ll only drink 2 glasses today!

MoonBaby1 · 08/05/2020 15:25

Oh come off it. There’s drunk and there’s paralytic.

iklboo · 08/05/2020 15:26

Is it balls neglect.

pastabest · 08/05/2020 15:26

I'm not drinking today but I probably will have a few glasses of wine tonight like i usually do in a Friday night when my toddlers are in bed.

Is that ok? Or is it just day time drinking that's neglect?

Well a couple with a photo of a huge crate of Budweiser and 4 bottles of prosecco amongst spirits are not exactly having a small glass

I have about 2 bottles of Prosecco, a crate of cider a box of red wine and some cooking sherry on my dresser. Doesn't mean I'm going to down it all in one go.

walkingchuckydoll · 08/05/2020 15:26

Why get drunk at all? A little bit tipsy is fun, drunk makes you look stupid, is a lot less fun and you feel terrible the whole day after.

CayrolBaaaskin · 08/05/2020 15:26

Because it helps block out the noise...

Areyousurethatsright · 08/05/2020 15:26

I agree OP.
There should always be someone sober to drive in an emergency, it sets a bad example, and having a hangover with kids around is hell so what's the point anyway?!

isabellerossignol · 08/05/2020 15:27

Hmm. I do think it's pretty grim to take kids to a pub every weekend and have them climbing the walls with boredom whilst their parents get pissed.

On the other hand, I had a huge delivery of booze the other day and photographed it and WhatsApped it to my friends. I'd be a bit horrified if they thought that meant I was planning on drinking it all at once.

user200000000 · 08/05/2020 15:28

Thank you, iklboo. I think it went a woooosh over the heads of some Grin

Michaelbaubles · 08/05/2020 15:28

I’m not one to get very drunk anyway - about 3 drinks tends to be my limit - so it’s not something I’d do, but given that they may well have been in the presence of their children 24/7 for the last six weeks, I’d expect they’d have a very good idea of how much attention they need and how likely they are to get ill or injured and have weighed it up accordingly. It wouldn’t be great parenting on my part, but if I started drinking now and kept a slow but steady pace all evening, I’d never get roaringly drunk and my kids, given unlimited screen time and snacks, would be perfectly happy.

MoonBaby1 · 08/05/2020 15:28

The someone needs to drive thing always comes up! Mn bingo

I think a lot of people on here have suffered neglect and it clouds their opinion.

A few drinks and/or spliffs isn’t neglect ffs.

Apolloanddaphne · 08/05/2020 15:28

Is it any different to drinking at christmas or on a birthday or whatever? Just because someone bought 4 bottles of Prosecco it doesn't mean they are going to drink them all. We got 12 bottles of wine delivered today but that doesn't mean we are going to drink them all today. You don't know if they mean to get a bit tipsy (which is fine) or so drunk they pass out (not so fine). Leave them too it. I am sure the kids won't come to any harm.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 08/05/2020 15:28

Generally I’m of the opinion that as long as someone is sober enough to drive, or at least get a taxi/deal with an emergency then it’s okay.

LovingLola · 08/05/2020 15:29

Why wouldn't you?

Because it’s upsetting and frightening for the kids?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 08/05/2020 15:29

I think setting out to "get drunk" is pathetic and really people should have grown out of that behaviour by the time they are about 22.

Being drunk is awful and being hungover is even worse.

Having a few drinks and being a little bit pissed and merry is one of life's great pleasures otoh. It's a fine line. Knowing when to stop and switch to water or a lovely cup of tea is one of the great grown-up skills in life.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/05/2020 15:30

Helps me clean the kitchen Smile mind you mine are adults and may join in, if they want. They have to get their own booze in, they not touching mind lol.

Shalom23 · 08/05/2020 15:30

Friday always has people declaring their anticipation of a few relaxing drinks.

So they've a stock good for them sensible with reduced shopping etc. Drinking around children is not wrong.

Why do you assume they'll get paralyzed with alcohol?

Alcohol is fun for lots of people.

pastabest · 08/05/2020 15:30

There should always be someone sober to drive in an emergency

so a couple should never again enjoy a bottle of wine together in an evening until one of their children passes their driving test? One must stay sober at all times?

I live in the middle of nowhere and DP doesn't drink so we always do have someone sober to drive but even I can see that's unlikely to be the case for most families. Presumably taxis exist in more built up areas?
