I wonder if lack of travel will revive the British seaside at all.
It has been sometime since I have visited the UK coast but have memories of the majority of places I went having shabby hotels and some very down at the heel shops and pubs.
I'd love to find out if in my absence which places have improved or potentially will to gain back tourists.

Llandudno is lovely :)

Whitby is good for atmosphere and laughing at goths.
Whitley Bay is a good family beach.
The Cornish beaches (Whitesands, Watergate, Carbis, etc) are lovely for swimming.
Southwold has the pier.
There's loads of them.

I live in East Yorks and if you look past the rather depressing seaside towns (Bridlington in particular has a "Where dreams come to die" vibe) the coast is beautiful. The stretch from Filey (sleepy but quite pretty) up to Whitby is good for the kind of lowkey fairly outdoorsy holiday we'll all be having this year. Also the climate is pretty dry so plenty of sunny days.

Not my town thank you.
It's lovely to be able to go down there without hordes of lobster red people chucking rubbish everywhere and drinking to excess.

WitsEnding · 07/05/2020 12:20

Sidmouth. Lovely gardens.

However, notable shitholes include Blackpool, Gt. Yarmouth, Poole, Hastings/St. Leonard's, Hunstanton, Newquay and New Brighton.

Whitstable is lovely.
....
I echo that, love it. Stayed there a few years ago at the Crescent Turner Hotel which I highly recommend.

As well as the lovely town with its quirky restaurants and shingly beach, the beautiful sandy beach at Tankerton is wonderful for swimming. You can walk dogs on there too.

There are plenty of places in the UK though, North Norfolk is a great place with lots of unsploilt areas and a seven mile long sandy beach - Holkham.

I fancy Filey and Whitby, never been.

Pembrokeshire. Absolutely beautiful with stunning beaches.

New Quay in Wales, I love it there.

BiggerBoat1 · 07/05/2020 12:28

Whitstable is gorgeous

Whitby is a total tourist trap but still lovely and the views from the abbey are outstanding.

Rye is a lovely little town and has some lovely beaches nearby and some great cliff walks.

Contrary to a previous poster - I live in Poole and I love it! But by all means stay away and I'll enjoy the gorgeous Dorset coast. Grin

Woolacombe is lovely. Or most places on the IOW.

Most of the beaches arent in nice towns tbh but I dont really care as I grew up on Margate and broadstairs. You can drive and go home for the night. I love Weymouth too which has its fair share of young 30ish people swigging out of 2L bottles of cider during the day. It doesn't unsafe though
