I wonder if lack of travel will revive the British seaside at all.
It has been sometime since I have visited the UK coast but have memories of the majority of places I went having shabby hotels and some very down at the heel shops and pubs.
I'd love to find out if in my absence which places have improved or potentially will to gain back tourists.

@Mucklowe
Whitby goth weekend!
It's a thing! Google it, the whole place gets taken over by goths

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 07/05/2020 12:58

@DisgraceToTheYChromosome
Whitby is good for atmosphere and laughing at goths
WTF? Angry
Sophie Lancaster springs to mind Sad Flowers
I love Whitby, and especially goth weekends as some of the outfits are amazing.
Filey just down the coast is lovely too, more quiet though and traditional "seasidey".

Folkestone - it's great.

I was walking along behind some tourists during the 2014 triennial (art and sculpture festival - Folkestone has some of the best outdoor art in the UK) and one of them was saying to the other, "why did you insist on driving all the way to Cornwall last year, when we had this so close to London!"

Although, the triennial that was planned for this summer has been postponed for a year. Sad

Check out the Harbour Arm, the Leas, the Sunny Sands.... Folkestone is stunning. Not sure where else in the UK has a champagne bar in a lighthouse.

None of it stay away and go abroad.

hippy1952 · 07/05/2020 13:09

Weymouth!

WobblingMyWigglyBits · 07/05/2020 13:09

Waves to Callmecordelia 😄

LizzieMacQueen · 07/05/2020 13:13

St Andrews would be my suggestion

CoolShoeshine · 07/05/2020 13:14

Fowey in Cornwall is my favourite seaside to town, but also like Norfolk: Sheringham, Wells next the Sea, Holkholm and Southwold over the border in Suffolk. Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft have beautiful beaches and lots of fun things to do if you avoid the main parts of town which are a bit shabby. Most importantly kids love them.

JudyCoolibar · 07/05/2020 13:16

St Ives, but it gets stupidly crowded at holiday times. If you can go outside those times, it's utterly beautiful and has a lot going for it in terms of things to do and see, both for adults and children.

viques · 07/05/2020 13:27

callmecordelia you forgot the tapas bar in the old railway line sheds, the Gormley statue and the fish restaurant on the harbour, omg their fish soup.......sorry, let me wipe the drool from my keyboard.

Another one who likes Deal, though it takes a bit of getting used to that everything closes on the dot in the evening. Including the chip shops.... There is a brilliant fish restaurant that does amazing fish and chips, and the pier cafe is great for breakfast and lunch.

Margate can be fun, the shell grotto, the Tate, lots of good cafes and restaurants, some absolutely tiny but with amazing food. It can be a bit grim, but has redeeming features.

Whitstable is lovely, but almost unbearable at weekends when you can barely move along the pavements and parking is a distant dream, good restaurants though, and you can also book a posh lunch or dinner at the Sportsman. The dream house I have been stalking for five years is just outside whitstable, one day my pretty, one day you will be mine.

Bromeliad · 07/05/2020 13:35

Lytham St. Anne's is lovely. Next door to Blackpool but completely different.

woodlandwalker · 07/05/2020 13:38

Swanage for a small town and Worthing for a larger one.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 07/05/2020 13:38

Have you thought of Northern Ireland? Many beautiful beaches and coastal areas, why not take a look at the Tourist Board Site - you may well be surprised at how much is on offer.

katie43210 · 07/05/2020 13:43

I love Whitby, Looe & Lytham St Annes. I also have a soft spot for Southport.

What's funny about goths?

36degrees · 07/05/2020 13:51

I am glad someone mentioned Sophie Lancaster Flowers.

If you're not into committing hate crimes I can recommend Formby, Lytham, Pwllheli/the Llyn Peninsula and Crail/the East Neuk. The Rhins of Galloway is lovely as well, my favourite beach is at Port Logan.

Bloodybridget · 07/05/2020 13:55

For us, possible for a day out from London, Broadstairs has plenty of charm and a lovely beach. And there's a pleasant walk to Ramsgate (which is a bit of a dump tbh) or towards Margate, we didn't manage to walk all the way there tho.

Obviously not grown up since being the bully at school

And there is nothing wrong with Great Yarmouth I'm obviously far too 'chavvy' for the middle class wannabes of mn Hmm

lifestooshort123 · 07/05/2020 14:15

Anywhere on the Isle of Purbeck - stunning beaches at Studland and Sandbanks.

joystir59 · 07/05/2020 14:20

I live in an amazing seaside town up North but not telling you because we don't want you here just yet thank you.

Grin Good plan lol
Likethebattle · 07/05/2020 14:39

‘laughing at goths’

Do you usually ridicule people on how they look? That’s just horrible and was the reason Sophie Lancaster was killed. Her boyfriend and her just looked different due to being goths and she was effectively kicked to death! You are an. Utter twat!

BeltaneBride · 07/05/2020 14:47

Yea to@Haggisfish /you beat me to it😀
Glad to see no-one has mentioned my favourites 😀

SpicedCamomile · 07/05/2020 14:51

Southwold, Aldeburgh, Dunwich (not much there as it all fell into the sea but I do love it there!). Frinton in Essex has a fantastic beach. Mevagissey in Cornwall. Practically all of Cornwall really. Tenby in Wales.

MrsAvocet · 07/05/2020 14:53

I don't know whether it counts as British or not, and the borders are currently closed anyway, but the Isle of Man is beautiful. Also there are lots of lovely small towns in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Ullapool is lovely and has a surprisingly mild climate.
