Can I ask a question here without fear of being shouted down by people calling me a murderer?

It generally seems acceptable to sit/stand 2 metres away from neighbours and have a "socially distanced chat".
Is it acceptable to sit in my mums garden 2 metres away and have a "socially distanced chat". And if not can anyone explain why?

Full disclosure my mum is 51 and has no health conditions; neither of us has been anywhere except the supermarket in the past two weeks.

Drivingdownthe101 · 08/05/2020 20:07

Well I’d do it RhymingRabbit3!

Bollss · 08/05/2020 20:09

I've just seen a comment along the lines of

Childcare can't be relied upon what happens when the polar ice caps melt and disease is unleashed.

Batshit.

@RhymingRabbit3 in my opinion it's fine. I suppose it's only "wrong" in that if you have to drive there it's not an "essential journey" but personally I think it's ok.

userxx · 08/05/2020 20:23

@RhymingRabbit3 Yep, I've done it a few times with friends, wine was even involved. Shock fucking horror....... I'm going to hell 😱

Willitneverend · 08/05/2020 20:27

@livinlavidaloki yes, I've seen that one. Also a graph purportedly about Spanish flu with nothing on its y axis or explaining where data is from, just a wobbly line indicating a massive peak in the future and a marker saying "you are here" before first small peak on x axis.

I'm beginning to feel demented myself as the people sharing this shite are normally sane, rational human beings. I had a big panic near the start but bounced back fairly quickly. But I'm finding people I muted for 30 days are appearing back on my timeline still being mad.

Willitneverend · 08/05/2020 20:28

@RhymingRabbit3 I did this a couple of weeks ago, my elderly parents live a 45 minute drive away so I made sure I'd loads of food in the car. They're still both alive.

heroku · 08/05/2020 20:29

A friend of mine had a socially distanced glass of wine with two friends in their garden today and got a howler posted through the letterbox from nextdoor! Apparently their behaviour is making everyone feel "very uncomfortable". People really are insufferable.

userxx · 08/05/2020 20:32

Oh the irony. The worlds gone mad.

Iamamoleinahole · 08/05/2020 20:36

Oh joy. This MN is full of end of the world types.

Brexit.
Shitstorm.
Old thickos.
Starvation.
Stashing.
Pandemic.
More stashing.
Toilet roles.
Virus killing sprays.
Airborne virus attack squads.
Covid9999.
Recession.
Depression.
Job losses.

None of them know about the asteroid yet

How do you combine your stashes mathematically to avoid additive stashes causing upper house floor collapse.

TinRoofRusty · 08/05/2020 20:40

Oh, yes, the Spanish Flu! Granted, there was quite the cover-up with that, to end the war. My grandmother survived it, her first husband and child did not. A few points, however. First of all, they did not know it was a virus. Secondly, they had no antibiotics to treat pneumonia, or anything else for that matter. It was an influenza virus. 102 years ago.

Toomanycats99 · 08/05/2020 20:44

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

Same here - I do feel a little bit guilty but it did me a lot of good!

My daughter even went to her friends garden for a socially distant chat.

Mikki2019 · 08/05/2020 20:44

I don’t understand why it’s ok for cleaners and nannies to go into people’s houses to work yet you can’t see your mum or partner ?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/05/2020 20:45

The Spanish flu thing is a classic example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. People read on the internet that the Spanish flu second wave was worse than the first and suddenly they are expert epidemiologists and know for a fact the second wave of covid will be the same.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 08/05/2020 20:48

Economy prioritised over family socialising.

Russellbrandshair · 08/05/2020 20:49

we’ve got 2 choices atm. Stay in our homes, or risk having to stay in a hospital whilst fighting for our lives

I saw that! Yes there is No middle ground at all is there? either stay in or fight for your life. noone has it mildly ever- everyone who has covid has to FIGHT FOR THEIR LIVES!!!!

Willitneverend · 08/05/2020 20:53

I've posted about this on another thread, but my Dad remembers the flu in 1957. He remembers getting ill and going to the GP where he was prescribed whatever it was that was meant to help. He then had to go back to his university digs where his landlady looked after him for a couple of weeks, he did get it quite badly. (Imagine going to the GP or your landlady looking after you at the moment!)

He also remembers someone in the train compartment he was in throwing up on the floor.

Df's a bit bemused with all the fuss now. Obviously I don't want him to get it but he has a degenerative disease and I think the coronavirus is less of a worry than that.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/05/2020 20:58

@Toomanycats99 I think this afternoon has done wonders for my mental health. I’ve always thought I’m strong but I’ve been getting more and more down recently. I’ll be worrying for the next few weeks in case DH catches it (he’s 65) but I’ll stick to this thread for my sanity!

Anyway according to a the VE Day thread on here I should also be ashamed of myself for celebrating war - I’ve done nothing right today!

TitianaTitsling · 08/05/2020 21:02

@Russellbrandshair I know! No one wants to be told about the recovered patients or those who don't need FULL LIFE SUPPORT!!!

Toomanycats99 · 08/05/2020 21:03

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

Yes typing this I just realised it's the first time in 7 weeks I actually have just had a nice chat and enjoyed myself.

I am a single parent to 2 still working full time and I just never get a break - this just gave me a bit of normality.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 08/05/2020 21:25

@RhymingRabbit3 - one of my adult children suffers with depression and anxiety, and because of the lockdown hasn't been able to access any of the help their GP tried to organise for them. I've been going to see them with a food parcel and sitting in their garden with them - a good two metres apart - for a chat and moral support to try and help keep their head above water. It helps both of us, although it kills me not being able to hug them.

I wonder if the dementors think death by suicide would be an acceptable result if I was to rabidly stick to their guidelines?

Sadly, I think they probably would.

theThreeofWeevils · 08/05/2020 21:29

neither of us has been anywhere except the supermarket in the past two weeks

Well, there's your answer, @RhymingRabbit3. Mixing supermarkets is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. You could bring the entire supply chain grinding to a halt were you to be so selfish and foolhardy and also wipe out every customer at each of your respective shops.

I think you should go for it.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/05/2020 22:01

We've had a lovely evening. We didn't do afternoon tea because the configuration of our house is a bit awkward, with a shared drive of only us and one neighbour having a sociably angled frontage, and sitting between our two people carriers wasn't that attractive a proposal! We went out on our scooters in the evening (so hedonistic and fun, it's double the body count of a run Wink ) and there was a good cluster having a sensible time on the green at the end of our road end. On our scoot there were lots of little clusters of gatherings along the quiet roads and cul de sacs and all very civilised. So we got back, grabbed the camping chairs and joined in on the green. DS got to run around sensibly with a classmate and they had a good time. I got to see a neighbour over the road that I haven't seen since school runs (over the road is technically 5 roads away!)

It's been really refreshing seeing people socially again Smile

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/05/2020 22:02

Interesting thread going in the coronavirus topic about how schools are dealing with outbreaks. Every single comment from people who work in schools have said there have been no cases of coronavirus in the keyworker children.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/05/2020 22:06

I mix supermarkets every week because I need oat milk in one and soya free bread in the other.

Trust me, if I had the wrong milk or bread, that stockpile of bogroll would vanish and the miasma would either cure Covid 19 or annihilate the population far more effectively. Wink

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/05/2020 22:11

I’m now feeling a bit guilty that the social distancing went a bit to pot. Don’t get me wrong, there was no hugging or anything like that but we were probably closer than 2m apart. It was just nice to feel normal again for a few hours
