Will you go out when lockdown is eased?

so say when coffee shops and restaurants are allowed to reopen, will you be going? I can’t see myself being comfortable going out to eat for quite some time

I wonder how many people commenting on this thread will die from it. Because the likelihood is...some will.

The death rate is still pretty low, but fair point to a degree I suppose ... except that not going out doesn’t mean you won’t get it either.
The Spanish flu was endemic apparently until the 1990s so likely most of us have had it, it’s just that immunity built up over time and those at the greatest risk died at the start.
COVID-19 is going to be here for a VERY, very long time even if we vaccinate (and even if those vaccinations work because no vaccination is 100% and no take up rate is 100%). We need to accept that.
The current lockdown period is just making sure it spreads more slowly and doesn’t overwhelm the NHS.

Life is terminal. More likely to die from an accident in your own home.

Probably won’t go to cafes etc but more because I have a baby and they take up a lot of room with pram etc. But will be seeing my mum as soon as possible. She is in her 50s with no underlying conditions. She hasn’t got any work at the moment so we will use that time for her to spend time with my little boy She has offered to take on childcare when I go back to work as finding a nursery place is proving difficult so want them to bond and make that transition easier to. Want to see my dad and step mum to but they are both frontline workers and they don’t want to risk giving it to us.

Guttersnipe · 05/05/2020 11:47

I've never been fussed about pubs, restaurants and cafes and I am not a great frequenter of mass gatherings so I can easily give those things a miss for a while longer, but I do greatly miss my freedom of movement, so, in that respect, yes, I will be first out the door when restrictions are lifted. I am also looking forward to being able to walk where I like and in what order I like round a supermarket.

I feel very sorry for people who believe that things will never get back to normal for them. I mean that genuinely, not patronisingly. I am pretty confident life as we knew it will return.

BirdieFriendReturns · 05/05/2020 11:51

I won’t be surprised in a year or so, people start posting on AIBU.

“I’ve not left my house in over a year due to Covid19, AIBU?”
“I’ve not been to work in 12 months and now my work want to dismiss me, can I sue them?”

Willitneverend · 05/05/2020 12:13

I'll be out like a fucking shot as soon as I can be. Obviously taking precautions, but the idea that the lockdown is going to go on for much longer than this is ludicrous. People die of other things too.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/05/2020 12:18

No. Whereas death may be inevitable I'd prefer it did not happen yet and I am happy to decrease my chances in the context of a known risk.

Drivingdownthe101 · 05/05/2020 12:39

Do you drive, YetAnotherSpartacus?

minmooch · 05/05/2020 12:53

Yes. Following all the guidelines and taking sensible precautions. Can't wait to see my son.

I've not found lockdown too hard as I'm very happy at home, have dogs, a garden and a bike so have been kept busy whilst working full time from home.

Will support my local businesses/shops/bars/restaurants when we can and as safely as possible.

Won't be getting on a plane though for a while (not that there are any flights anyway).

Dad is in a care home and imagine visiting him will be a long time coming - not sure he will know who I am even now but it is what it is.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/05/2020 12:54

Oh, I do love a good strawman argument ... not.

I don't drive, as it happens.

When I do travel as a passenger I am always careful to put my seatbelt on and I tell drivers if I feel unsafe. I stopped being a passenger in my elderly father's car when it was clear he no longer had the capacity to drive safely. We took the keys from him because he was a risk to himself and others.

Right now, I do not feel safe going out. I do go out, but only when I need to and when I need to buy food or to exercise. I avoid busy times and I exercise well away from people. I doubt this will change for some time.

It's called being aware of risk, making risk assessments and acting accordingly.

You may choose to do otherwise.

Drivingdownthe101 · 05/05/2020 12:56

It wasn’t an ‘argument’, it was a question.
My brother took all those precautions and unfortunately still died in a car accident when a drunk driver drove him off the road.

TeeBee · 05/05/2020 12:57

No, I'll probably do what I'm doing now. I'm in no rush...except maybe to get my personal grooming done.

God yes,my mental health instability scares me more than the virus.

Drivingdownthe101 · 05/05/2020 13:03

Distasteful? That’s a vile comment.

Angel2702 · 05/05/2020 13:06

No I’ve not really missed eating out as much as I thought I would. I’m looking forward to going to a few other shops, going to the beach or being able to take the kids to play football.

What about some of us who dont have that choice?
What about all the people still working in environments for hours at a time where SD is impossible. Like for instance supermarket staff, factory workers, lorry drivers who make sure that when you do venture out you can actually go out for food?

Dont try and make out that people who want a bit of normality even if its still restricted are some idiots who dont understand risk assessing. Many of us live with a far greater risk than a cup of coffee every time we go to work. We dont have the luxury of choosing when we go out among hoards of people so when restrictions are lifted i will be there, still taking precautions, but not hiding away at home. Just because I get to decide to do something for me and not only 'going out' for other people's needs for a change.

Same. Probably got more chance of being knocked over and killed by a car on my way to a cafe than getting killed by the virus now

Happyspud · 05/05/2020 15:57

If the infection numbers are low then yes, I’ll be out and about. While taking care to wash my hands and wear masks if that’s what is specified, and take care to not be too close to too many other people wherever I am. I think we just need a few weeks to get our confidence back and we’ll settle in again to life.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 05/05/2020 16:30

I need my nails done... I don't think my fingers can last any longer. So yes please.

IncrediblySadToo · 05/05/2020 16:47

@Jeeperscreepers69
I thought everyone would be chomping at the bit to be out not wimping in a corner. Stop letting this virus rule you

There's just no need for comments like this.

I'm not letting the virus rule me or wimping in a corner Hmm

But I will not be rushing out, going here there & everywhere I have underlyings 'diabetes & high blood pressure and CV IS killing people with those conditions. Ventilation is unlikely to save me, that's even if they bother to take me into hospital.

I also have an elderly (92 yo) Aunt & i'd rather be able to see her (in the garden at a distance) without worrying more then necessary that I'm passing on to her

Why should everyone be chomping at the night to go to a cafe or restaurant?

I make a bloody good coffee & perfectly fine food, in my comfortable home. I have plenty of things I enjoy doing & all the joys of technology - why risk my health to go to a Café/restaurant?

Ill probably drive to the lake and take a coffee with me & sit in the sun ☀️

Jeeperscreepers69 · 05/05/2020 17:13

@IncrediblySadToo.... Theres no need for comments like this? Stop making me feel bad for expressing my opinion. This virus is ruling your life. We have a immune system for a reason sweety 😁

Jeeperscreepers is it necessary to be so patronising to IncrediblySadToo? You appear not to be recognising that for some people this virus is putting them at increased risk and their immune system may not to be able to fight it. It may well be able to but being cautious and not rushing out if you have an underlying condition (2 in this case) is not ‘wimping in a corner’ .

People are going vary hugely in their attitude to this according to their individual circumstances. Much better that those happy to go out when the time comes to get on and do so whilst understanding that others will feel differently.
