The mental health intolerance on here is horrific
Absolutely right. And I really really appreciated the words of Rev Stuart Campbell. Absolute grown up in this playground of nastiness we've been thrust into.
Honestly I think Dementors, in many ways like bullies (which come to think of it is exactly what they are) shrink away almost as soon as they are called out. In this situation it seems instead of being passive and accepting everything, we need to constantly question, weigh up, lobby, guide, actually shape the present and the future we want for ourselves. Not in a selfish way but in a way which holds everyone responsible for everyone else's minimum quality of life. This includes the quality of life to come on here and say you are struggling or speculate about when you might be able to go for a beer with your friends again without being leapt on from a bunch of entirely toxic and self-serving people.

Campervan69 · 03/05/2020 09:49

I don't think Rev Stuart Campbell is an actual rev BTW. It's the Wings Over Scotland bloke. But he is very good.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/05/2020 09:50

The people going to look at a meteor shower in their car, how is that even spreading the virus? Confused and the way the hair cut thing is made to sound like some kind of drug dealing. Grin it's quite funny really. Oh dear.

AnxiousElephant77 · 03/05/2020 09:50

And the most favourite term of the dementors has just come through as an alert on my Sky News app.

'The new normal.'

Orangeblossom78 · 03/05/2020 09:53

"It was so exciting to see friends again and have that human interaction but very quickly I started to feel very guilty"

"within half an hour it did make me feel bad"

Yes we get it BBC, people are bad and terrible, thanks for that...

trappedsincesundaymorn · 03/05/2020 09:58

'The new normal.'

Bloody hope not, it's worse than my 'old normal' and that was shit.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/05/2020 10:01

The UK government should not introduce an "arbitrary age limit" when lifting lockdown measures, the chairman of the British Medical Association (BMA) has said.

That'll please DH. He's 65 and there's been a few articles recently saying the over 60s should have to isolate (some said the over 50s) once this is over. One article even said people should be forced to prove their age if they were out and about and be fined if they were over a certain age. I think DH would have taken his chances!

Orangeblossom78 · 03/05/2020 10:02

Yes just been reading about that for the over 70s. Glad they seem to be seeing sense. I know some who are too frightened to go out at the mo

LisaSimpsonsbff · 03/05/2020 10:06

One of the really sad things to witness in how people have reacted to this is the complete evaporation of the (supposed) parity of physical and mental health. Turns out it was just noise when people claimed to take mental health seriously, now it's just all in their heads and a personal weakness/selfishness if people have the audacity to have a mental health crisis while PEOPLE ARE DYING

Alsohuman · 03/05/2020 10:07

There’s a piece in today’s Telegraph with some expert or other saying the health effect of extreme isolation is the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes a day. I’m considering putting a link somewhere to see what the reaction is. I’m also thinking about taking up smoking again.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/05/2020 10:08

People will be dying, of suicide...if it continues...but maybe that doesn't count. Wouldn't be 'from the virus' would it. Sorry to sound so cynical.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/05/2020 10:10

I must admit it's worried me. I'll be let loose soon I presume and will have to go back to the office. If the government decides that DH is vulnerable I don't know how that will work. I keep reading that he is at a much higher risk of dying and it frightens me.

Sorry, please don't think I'm turning into a dementor! I've never had mental health problems (not boasting, I know how lucky I am) and every now and then this situation gets to me.

Summersunandoranges · 03/05/2020 10:15

‘The new normal’ makes my teeth itch!

Just watching Andrew Marr and the top scientific analysts has said we are past the peak then later on in the show they are talking about the app they are bringing out which will help track it - but why if we are past the peak?

I won’t be downloading it!

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/05/2020 10:16

Being worried is absolutely fine PinkSparklyPussyCat, I think everyone is worried to some extent. The different between a dementor and someone who has natural concerns is that dementor wants everyone else to have exactly the same worries that they have, and will shout down anyone who isn’t worrying in the same way that they are.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/05/2020 10:17

It's Ok Pink, we're in the same boat. It's different to share stuff than to shame others...it's not easy is it. Mine can't work from home either as it's in manufacturing. He's going to go in, he's self employed so will need to. Hopefully they will make it as safe as possible for them to do so.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/05/2020 10:20

Thanks *Drivingdownthe101. I don't want to be banished for being a dementor!

Not that they'd want me either - I'm thinking of what I'm going to do after lockdown. I've decided to trade in my car after lockdown for something that's fun! I know fun isn't really allowed, and I'm not looking at an electric car either so I really am doomed!

DianneWhatcock · 03/05/2020 10:21

Don't want an argument but I think some people demanding a longer lockdown are not understanding that just because people survive covid that they may not go on to live long and happy lives. Due to mental health traumas from this and also due to other serious diseases not picked up in time due to the NHS basically stopping all other services
*
I think the generous government packages alongside payment holidays mean quite a lot of people who are short termist about money are happy right now because they are "safe" from the virus and have enough cash. There are going to be more mental health issues and poverty related deaths and illnesses caused when the economy tanks but they just can’t see that angle. They just think ‘we have enough money, a house, are safe this is the best option’.
Well the government cant keep printing money indefinitely. and we will all have to pay that back via taxation. and companies will fold if they cant trade leading to more and more redundancies. (on that note makes me laugh wasn't it always Labour who were accused of having a magic money tree? yet suddenly the Tories have found one it seems.)...Also want to add those that need shielding should quite rightly stay in for as long as needed and also get financial and practical help, I am not disputing this or being insensitive to them I have friends and family who need to shield and I do not want any harm to come to them or any of the others.*

^ Posted this on my Facebook yesterday because I'm sick of all the hysteria about lockdown must continue indefinitely (I borrowed some comments from posters in this very thread)

Wow it soon brought the Dementors out on my Facebook friends. Quite useful as I ended up deleting loads Grin

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 03/05/2020 10:23

SPEND MONEY... BUY SHIT... SAVE THE ECONOMY

Finally a message I can get down with! goes online to buy cosmetics

It really disgusts me how the police are harassing people for sitting on bloody park benches when there are SO many women and children enduring increased domestic abuse at home- why arent they out protecting them instead of policing a frail 80 year old sitting for more than 20 seconds on a fcking park bench?

AnxiousElephant77 · 03/05/2020 10:26

What I want to know is what the dementors think of all the industries affected by this. Arenas, cinemas, restaurants, bars, sports. Places where social distancing isn't a feasible way for them to operate. Do we just let those industries tank? I'm sure I read that leisure accounts for 9% of GDP. British Airways putting 12,000 people at risk of redundancy, where do they find jobs?

And also, what about actually enjoying our lives? Do we just all shrug and admit that this is the new normal and at least we aren't all dead?

Orangeblossom78 · 03/05/2020 10:31

Dianne, it is common sense. I guess the response you got might be cos deep down they know that and don't want to think about it. It's costing billions a day...

Anyway, just been reading the new message might be something like "Restart" Hmm.

ThatLibraryMiss · 03/05/2020 10:31

From another thread: I never queue for stuff. Never.

Quick, ladies, curtsy! The queen's in the house! I mean, I can't think of anyone else who finds there is no queue, ever, between her and possession of the things she wants.

And the poster wringing her hands about why there are so many people in the post office queue when she herself was in the post office queue obviously feels that her business was Very Important whereas the others were just covidiots who will seize any opportunity to break The Roolz and cause Nightingale hospitals to be full for the next five years.

Still, it's nice to see dementors being called out and seemingly being in the minority.

And from this thread, there's been a few articles recently saying the over 60s should have to isolate (some said the over 50s) once this is over

This 62-year-old says Fuck That.

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/05/2020 10:33

The thought of my 62 year old dad agreeing to self isolate...
Also my mum is 60. She still works full time in the NHS! Surely a lot of 60+’s still work?

Summersunandoranges · 03/05/2020 10:34

Alexis I agree! Ridiculous.

Diane I bet you did! My facebook is full of handwringing, some one dared to say they wanted to come out of lockdown and was piled on!

LisaSimpsonsbff · 03/05/2020 10:35

The Guardian is reporting that the public are overwhelmingly against the lifting of lockdown, which surprised me: www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/02/fearful-britons-oppose-lifting-lockdown-schools-pubs-restaurants-opinium-poll

Maybe MN isn't so unrepresentative after all.

I know that this is me being patronising now but I can't help but feel that this wouldn't be the case if so many people didn't see the current situation as 'free money' and time off work. That will end - it has to - and I think the shock is going to be devastating to a lot of people

LisaSimpsonsbff · 03/05/2020 10:36

Sorry, that was supposed to be in agreement with Diane but I didn't say that so it looked like I was just trying to nick your point, sorry!
