Hi, just need a bit of help. I'm writing a quiz and need one of the answers to be "Germany". It can't be too easy so I don't want anything along the lines of "in which country is Hamburg located"

Does anyone have a fun fact about Germany where the answer isn't too obscure or too obvious? My brain is addled! Thanks

From which country was Paul McCartney deported in 1960? (though that would have been West Germany at the time)

The Mollibahn is a narrow guage railway that runs through a normal street in Bad Doberan (like a tram does)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/05/2020 14:42

Yes I might get someone pedantic arguing with me over that one. For complicated reasons the answer has to be Germany rather than East or West Germany. But it's the sort of level of question I need!

In which country on every New Years Eve do they traditionally watch the British slapstick comedy Dinner for One?

The demolition of the Wall officially began on 13 June 1990 and was completed in November 1991. The "fall of the Berlin Wall" paved the way for German reunification, which formally took place on 3 October 1990.

Can you set your question from the above paragraph for the answer to be Germany?

Bloodylovecheese · 01/05/2020 14:47

Pilates was invented there

Where was aspirin (as we know it) discovered?
Germany

Prince Philip was educated in France, Great Britain and where else?

I don't know if Germany is unique in this but there are strict laws on what you can/can't use as forenames for your children. Eg no surnames, must be obvious what the sex is etc.

In which country is it a NYE tradition to sneakily fill a doughnut with mustard and place on a tray with jam-filled doughnuts to trick an unsuspecting party goer

reluctantbrit · 01/05/2020 15:18

How knowledgeable is the audience? Thee is no point getting an obscure fact if nobody will know the answer. I do office quizzes once a year and we are a German bank with around 1/3 either German or have lived in Germany and we always keep it easy.

Levi Strauss (founder of Levi’s) was born in Germany

Adidas and Puma were founded by two rival brothers from Germany.

The point regarding strict nameing laws for children is correct. Gender has to be identifiable, it can’t be rude or made up. If it is a strange name you have to proof that it is used as a popular name in another country.

Dinner for One is also a good one.

The term WAG was first used as a popular expression during the 2006 football world cup in Germany (when they invaded the country and shopped until they dropped).

APheasantPluckersSon · 01/05/2020 15:29

DinnerForOne also shown every NYE in Denmark so could make it tricky or up for dispute? I think it is German though just with English actors?

APheasantPluckersSon · 01/05/2020 15:31

How about:

Which country was born in 1871 and reborn in 1989?

froggers1 · 01/05/2020 15:31

In which country do you have to be quiet on Sunday afternoons? No hoovering or DIY.

Where did the the British Army officially leave in 2019?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/05/2020 15:43

I like a lot of these suggestions.

What is the attraction of "Dinner for One"? I've never heard of it.

OP posts:
PamDenick · 01/05/2020 15:45

Hmmm, after a quick Wiki, it seems that Dinner for One is also broadcast in quite a few other countries...
it is British though...

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/05/2020 15:46

Sorry, I probably should have said that , if they get the theme of the round correctly, the teams will work.out that the country starts with the letter G. So the fact about Germany can't be too obvious.

OP posts:
Brahumbug · 01/05/2020 15:46

The trouble with these suggestions is that the answer is always the same, Germany. I am trying to think of a question about Germany!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/05/2020 15:47

@froggers1 DH used to live in Belgium and says it was the same there. That was many years ago though so it might have changed

notchickenagain · 01/05/2020 16:04

I think it's the only country starting with 'G' that borders nine other countries
