Mine is D. B. Cooper. He hijacked a beong 727, stole $1.25 million in today's money, and parachuted down to earth with it. His identity is unknown and it's unknown if he survived the plunge to earth.

@SabrinaThwaite thanks for the links. Don't think I have the fortitude today to read the conspiracy thread. It looked like it descended into the usual name calling if you dare to question the official versions! Confused

SabrinaThwaite · 19/05/2020 11:18

Think it’s the last 3 or 4 pages on that thread that went all Confused, so if you ignore those ones you’ll still find a few new rabbit holes to fall into. I spent a good few hours reading the Dyatlov pass stuff.

AppleJane · 19/05/2020 11:38

Oh that's not so bad then, I'll give it a go! Smile

loopylindazdaughter · 19/05/2020 13:48

@dayswithaY which serial was it please?

Sorry I can't post links but if you go on the website serialpodcast.org/season-one you can download it from there.

Zaphodsotherhead · 19/05/2020 14:02

I've found the book I was on about. It's called Dead Mountain.
www.amazon.co.uk/Dead-Mountain-Untold-Dyatlov-Incident/dp/1452140030/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&s=books&crid=1QYLXL2JF2ONV&keywords=dead+mountain+the+untold+true+story+of+the+dyatlov+pass+incident&sprefix=Dead+Mountain%2Cstripbooks%2C504&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1589893284&sr=1-1

It says it's the 'True Story' of what happened, but in reality it's one man's version of events. But very plausibly put, I think.

mistermagpie · 19/05/2020 15:47

I'm loving this thread!

I watched the documentary about the woman who drive the wrong way up the motorway in America whilst it wasn't a 'mystery' as such, what was odd about it was her behaviour with a load of kids in the car and her families attitude later. I felt in the documentary that there was a subtle hint that her husband and sister (might have been SIL) we're having a thing now, but that might be my imagination. I read a reddit on it that put forward the theory that what she had done was actually murder/suicide. Her behaviour on the drive was interesting as was the fact that a 35 minute journey took her about 4 hours, but there wasn't much detail on what she was doing for all that time.

Anyway, infrasound reminded me of something. I work in crime prevention and we used to use these devices that emitted sound waves of a specific frequency. They are only detectable up to a certain age (something to do with the development of the ear) so sound like a horrible unpleasant noise to people under about 25. Good for dispersing teenagers hanging around shops etc. We don't use them anymore for some reason but I was reminded of that.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/05/2020 20:37

You can get Dead Mountain on audible. It's one answer but - to my mind - one of the least impossible ones.

loopylindazdaughter · 19/05/2020 21:07

Thanks @dayswithaY I've started it this aft ;)

monkeyonthetable · 19/05/2020 21:09

@mistermagpie - that's interesting what you say about sound. We were in Japan a couple of years ago with DC teens who suddenly said, 'Argh - horrible noise!' DH and I couldn't hear it. It was playing outside a mall to stop teens congregating there.

SabrinaThwaite · 19/05/2020 21:26

Those anti-teen devices are called Mosquitoes in the UK - not banned, but there are questions about their use in the UK.

SweetMarmalade · 19/05/2020 22:17

@mistermagpie I’ve seen that documentary, it was very bizarre.

Everyone was saying how normal the morning was, Nothing out of the ordinary when they left the holiday park.

Loads of unanswered questions, why did she leave her phone where she did? Why did she take the route she did. It’s so strange.

Everyone interviewed can’t believe she would do this, completely out of character, always in control.

Was it a mix of smoking and drink? Would that completely tip you over the edge to act in such a completely bizarre way.

I wondered whether tumour or stroke, but didn’t they not check for this on the autopsy because they found alcohol in her system?

Some facts are fuzzy as I watched it some time ago now.

SweetMarmalade · 19/05/2020 22:19

They mentioned dental pain meds I think too? Could it have been a combo of all three.

mistermagpie · 19/05/2020 23:00

Yeah her family were really hung up on the fact that she had a tooth abscess. The weird thing was that I'm sure her levels of intoxication were described as being really extreme, but people who saw her on the drive noticed nothing (until she drove up the motorway the wrong way obviously).

I felt sorry for her remaining son, I wonder if her husband is trying to protect her memory for him or something?

dayswithaY · 20/05/2020 00:03

@loopylindazdaughter I'm jealous as I'd love to listen to Serial for the first time again. Come back and tell us your thoughts or take a look on Reddit, they love discussing it.

AppleJane · 20/05/2020 07:33

For anyone new like me to the podcast app:

Serial, series 1 episode one is called The Alibi
Remember to search all podcasts (I was accidentally searching in my library only!)

If you click the plus sign it will add the episode to your library and you can also download to your device for uninterrupted listening.

Now I just need to find a way to get some peace and quiet Grin

AppleJane · 20/05/2020 07:40

@SweetMarmalade and @mistermagpie

The documentary I watched suggested she went into a gas station looking for pain killers.

It reminded me of a story my friend told me years ago. They are type 1 diabetic and they had an 'episode' which saw them drive home for over half an hour through a very busy city centre and 'woke up' when they got home and had no memory of the journey.

The brain is an amazing organ.

The documentary led you to believe the American lady could have been a secret drinker which interacted with medication. Such a sad story.

monkeyonthetable · 20/05/2020 12:20

Some dental pain meds are really strong. I remember having an abscess and being given fizzy extra strength co-codamol which made me feel high. If you coupled that with secret drinking, you could easily be off your head.

Zaphodsotherhead · 20/05/2020 12:26

I'm not big on Podcasts, can anyone recommend any Netflix or Amazon series or documentaries that I ought to watch?

I've just been binging Buzzfeed Unsolved and, while it's fun, it's not quite as detailed as I'd like.

dayswithaY · 20/05/2020 13:00

The Confession Tapes
The Devil Next Door
The Innocent Man
Abducted in Plain Sight
Ted Bundy Files
Amanda Knox
The Staircase
Don't F* With Cats
Making a Murderer
The Confession Killer
Cold Case Files

All on Netflix.

AppleJane · 20/05/2020 13:16

Another cracking list from @dayswithaY Star

Unfortunately I've seen most of those but they're all binge worthy!!

dayswithaY · 20/05/2020 15:05

I can also recommend The Witness, a documentary about Kitty Genovese and the bystander effect, also on Netflix.

If only they had taught True Crime instead of maths at school, I might have paid more attention!

Zaphodsotherhead · 20/05/2020 17:18

Thank you so much, dayswithaY.

I've never even heard of most of these! The only one I have heard of is Don't F**k with Cats, which I think features some horrible behaviour towards animals and I can't watch that.

That's my week off sorted...

BillandBen87 · 20/05/2020 17:37

How has no-one mentioned the Long Island Serial Killer yet??

Also, if I injured my head and couldn't see it, I would use my phone to snap it and then inspect it. Have followed the Panama case with interest since the Daily Beast 3 part article which was a good write up.

I suspect the Delphi killer will just be caught one day like the GSK. The podcast 'Down the Hill' descibes this awful case in detail.

Leicester5 · 20/05/2020 21:24

@Zaphodsotherhead no I would hate that so wouldn't go anywhere near it.

I'm not interested in the JB case because I tend to not want to read because of the beauty pageant connotations. I thought sadly we'll never know anything about MM so don't read anything about that. I don't read about Panama girls as it gives me the creeps and keeps me up at night.

Ok so what next?
