Mine is D. B. Cooper. He hijacked a beong 727, stole $1.25 million in today's money, and parachuted down to earth with it. His identity is unknown and it's unknown if he survived the plunge to earth.

I must stop reading this thread late at night. It's terrifying (but fascinating).

Pootle40 · 18/05/2020 07:27

@dayswithaY

I agree it is odd that the evidence re the pineapple wasn't talked about as it was clearly always known from the autopsy and the photos in the house. The initial investigation was poor though so that may have a lot to do with it.

It's interesting that so much was made of her being a child who took part in beauty pageants .........I often wonder who started that narrative because it is really irrelevant I think and led a lot of people down the wrong path. Just a distraction from a family incident gone very wrong.

dayswithaY · 18/05/2020 08:29

True, and now Jonbenet will forever be known as the tragic child beauty queen and every photo you see of her she's is in full make up at a pageant. That was the narrative with all its paedophile implications and the child behind all of this has been forgotten. Poor Jonbenet was let down by many people in her life. I did listen to a podcast (can't remember the name) when a former Boulder police officer said that neither the parents or the police wanted this solved and he left the force as he couldn't stand what he was seeing.

BBC News has quite a detailed story on the Dyatlov Pass incident today - link above

Brahumbug · 18/05/2020 10:29

The man from Taured was a 1982 science fiction story. It is in the book 'A directory of possibilities'. Plus the fact that there is no mention if it in any contemporary Japanese records.

AppleJane · 18/05/2020 11:25

Thanks to FlamingoAndJohn I now know what that purple icon on my phone is Grin

If anyone has the time to post a list of interesting podcasts (crime and otherwise) to get me started I'd be really grateful Smile

user1471565182 · 18/05/2020 11:34

I just dont really see the confusion around Dyatlov. If you ignore the 50s government inspectors (who were probably terrified of blaming anybody) there are fairly obvious answers

Awbu · 18/05/2020 13:26

What do you think happened user?

Zaphodsotherhead · 18/05/2020 13:31

There's an excellent book about the Dyatlov Pass incident - the title of which I can't remember at the moment, annoyingly - but it puts forward a very plausible theory for low frequency sound waves causing the party to think an avalanche was on the way. Most of the rest of the stuff, the injuries and so on, can be explained away with natural causes.

It's very interesting. Wish I could remember what it's called!

BertieBotts · 18/05/2020 14:08

Infrasound? There is a fascinating but creepy documentary series called Ghosts on the Underground which is totally worth watching, I think it's on youtube. They reckoned infrasound might be to blame for some of the creepy experiences people have in tube stations etc. It's outside of our range of hearing, but it still reaches us and has effects on our brains, making us feel distinctly unsettled and "creepy" and more susceptible to interpreting innocent things as dangerous.

SunnyAfternoon12 · 18/05/2020 14:48

I stayed up late last night reading the Reddit threads about Andrew Gosden and I can’t get my head round how he was last sighted at Kings Cross then completely vanished. There’s so much cctv in London and yet there’s no trace of him beyond him leaving the station. It’s such a sad story.

dayswithaY · 18/05/2020 16:15

@AppleJane it really depends if you like serious or light hearted podcasts. Good British podcasts that tend to focus on UK crime are Seeing Red and They Walk Among Us. A very factual podcast is Casefile, lots of detail. For all the big stories in true crime like JonBenet, Jennifer Kesse, Maura Murray, Yuba County Five, West Memphis Three, etc you want True Crime Garage, Generation Why and Trace Evidence. They are all stand alone episodes but if you want a gripping podcast series then listen to Serial, Season One. It's what got me hooked on true crime.

For lesser known crimes with a gentle, investigation style approach I do like Someone Knows Something and also Bear Brook. They are both a slow climb but so compelling. Criminal is a series of short podcasts on obscure small town crimes, quite quirky and charming.

I love My Favourite Murder but it's very light hearted and not to everyone's taste.

Genette Tates dad has died...know there was links to Robert Black and plans to charge him before he died but still...sad he never got actual answers or closuree

Brahumbug · 18/05/2020 16:29

With the Dyatlov pass incident members of the group being found minus clothing does point to hypothermia, a phenomenon known as paradoxical undressing.

Brahumbug · 18/05/2020 16:30

My previous reply was for @LifeIsBrutal

Snooks1971 · 18/05/2020 17:59

@Brahumbug yes I’ve read that too. Wonder why they apparently broke out of the tent though by slashing it from the inside? Or why they left the tent at all?

AppleJane · 18/05/2020 19:47

@dayswithaY that's a cracking list, just what I was after!

Thank you very much Smile

SweetMarmalade · 18/05/2020 19:59

@dayswithaY thank you from me too Grin I’ve just taken a screenshot of your post and will check some of your recommendations out!

Frokni · 18/05/2020 20:53

Great thread! Scrolled every single page of it :-) lots of inspo for documentary watching

MulticolourMophead · 18/05/2020 22:29

Do Android phones have a similar podcast icon? Or do I look for podcasts via other means, eg Spotify, etc?

dayswithaY · 18/05/2020 23:59

I don't know much about androids but you can get podcasts on Spotify or Stitcher - which you can just Google you don't need the app.

BubblyWater · 19/05/2020 01:47

@MulticolourMophead download "podcasts" from the Play store. Icon looks like multicolour raindrops ironically!

BubblyWater · 19/05/2020 02:00

I went down a rabbit hole on the Vanishing Triangle based on this thread. I was acutely aware of the details of the cases given that I lived in Ireland in the nineties. Murders are rare in Ireland and the cases of those missing women (presumed dead) shocked and frightened the nation.

I think because of the media attention we always assumed the deaths were connected, and a lot of people, myself included, assumed it might have something to do with LM. Having read far too much on Reddit now, its clear that 3 of those deaths related to domestic violence and Gardai have a prime suspect who has never been charged. So these men continue to walk around their communities and enjoy their lives and everyone knows the truth of what they've done and can do nothing without a body.

MulticolourMophead · 19/05/2020 03:22

BubblyWater Thanks for the info.

SabrinaThwaite · 19/05/2020 10:03

For anyone interested in the Dyatlov incident, then this website has a good collection of information:

dyatlovpass.com/

I found it via a previous MN thread on conspiracy theories here.
