Mine is D. B. Cooper. He hijacked a beong 727, stole $1.25 million in today's money, and parachuted down to earth with it. His identity is unknown and it's unknown if he survived the plunge to earth.

Jeffrey Macdonald - the guy who wrote the book spent a lot of time with him as initially believed in his innocence but by the end of it was sure he was guilty. Also the wife's parents quite dramatically changed their opinion after witnessing his subsequent behaviour. I think he is a similar sort of character to Bamber and probably guilty as sin.

Pootle40 · 08/05/2020 07:59

I've read quite a bit aboutJeffrey McDonald - I think he is guilty. An early Chris Watts. I watched Fatal Vision in the 80s and the case stuck with me.

Hippywannabe · 08/05/2020 08:58

That Carl Tanzler case is disturbing. A similar one is that of Julie Mott, a cystic fibrosis sufferer whose body disappeared from a funeral home. Whilst going down the rabbit hole on that one, I read a load of posts on a forum from her ex boyfriend (a suspect in the disappearance) which went on for pages-weird! I can't remember which forum the boyfriend's posts are on but you can probably find them if younresearch the case.

@DulciUke with West Mesa, would the police not have released his name if he appeared to be the killer?

Hushabusha · 08/05/2020 14:59

An Icelandic man disappeared in Dublin in Feb last year. He came for a poker tournament on the Fri. Went for a stroll on the Saturday morning and was never seen again. Bizarre.

Tramolamodol · 08/05/2020 15:13

@Darklane the Glenn Miller case is apparently not that mysterious. My partner's colleagues uncle was a bomber pilot in WWII. On a return journey back to England, the bombs were dropped to ensure enough fuel for the journey home. Unfortunately, one of the bombs was dropped on a plane flying below. It was apparently an Allied plane, was in the same area as GM should have been and also the night he never returned. Apparently, there are records to this affect. Who knows though?

MrsJoshNavidi · 08/05/2020 15:27

The plane that disappeared a few years ago. I don't suppose we'll ever know what happened to it for sure

It’s so sad for his family. Reminds me a lot of Trevor Deeley’s disappearance too.

@Besom

Interestingly, the author, Joe McGinnis was sued by Jeffrey MacDonald, the accusation being that he had falsely claimed to believe in his innocence in order to gain access. It was settled out of court with damages awarded to MacDonald. Joe McGinnis' involvement was criticised. After all, it's a much better book ending if he is guilty. I am unsure about this case. The thing that I can't understand is that the military policeman actually saw a woman who fitted Macdonald's description, standing near the house on the night of the murders. That woman existed, she was called Helena Stockely. She confessed at various times. It's a very weird coincidence if he simply invented her.

Hushabusha · 08/05/2020 16:51

Yeah, poor Trevor Deeley must be missing 15 years now. More. Nearly 20.
I think I read something a few years ago that suggested he may have inadvertently come across a drug deal and that was why he disappeared. Or was disappeared.

LadyEloise · 08/05/2020 17:15

The night Trevor Deeley went missing was an awful night. I've seen the video of the last sighting of him. So sad for those who love him. All the posters his friends and family put up around the city. Heartbreaking.
All the missing women - some we can guess what happened but don't have proof
Phillip Cairns.
The Icelandic man.

ThelmaDinkley · 08/05/2020 17:37

Bigfoot fascinates me. Same as Jacob Rees Mogadishu I think there’s something in it and am now a believer.

ThelmaDinkley · 08/05/2020 18:09

I also watched a programme about Luke Durban who disappeared after leaving a nightclub. Very sad, looked embroiled with drugs and some shady characters.

ThelmaDinkley · 08/05/2020 18:10

Claudia Lawrence too. I wish her parents and sister could get some closure.

MissEliza · 08/05/2020 18:55

The couple who were murdered in their car in the Alps. Their DD's survived. I think they were of Iraqi origin. I think the dgm died too. It didn't make any sense and I felt desperately sorry for the little girls.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/05/2020 20:34

Katrice Lee who disappeared from a NAAFI Supermarket on her second birthday.

Heygirlheyboy · 08/05/2020 20:56

Poor Trevor and his family... I was in Dublin that night, taxis were on strike if I remember rightly and it was absolutely lashing. Is it naive of me to think that someone could call.or write anonymously even just to say he's gone... more than one person must know. His family walked the streets putting up posters. Believe it or not it will be 20 years in December.

Frownette · 08/05/2020 21:53

@MissEliza I think you may be thinking of Al Halli? One dd survived but the others didn't.

Might have been a random shooting but both parties (cyclist and family) had security cleared jobs

MissEliza · 08/05/2020 21:57

I didn't realise one of the little girls died. It was a really sad story and I wish they could have got justice.

ellanwood · 08/05/2020 23:08

I think both Al Hilli girls survived @Frownette

Chicchicchicchiclana · 08/05/2020 23:13

Why have several people said on this thread "the police know something about Claudia Lawrence" quite knowingly? What is the source for this speculation?

One thing that this thread has made quite clear to me is that it is actually extremely rare for a person to disappear without a trace - the same few names come up again and again.

SydneyCarton · 09/05/2020 07:33

@AuntMasha Stephen King has written a short story called Herman Wouk Is Still Alive based on the Taconic State Parkway crash, trying to rationalise why someone would take that course of action. It’s available online here -www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/05/herman-wouk-is-still-alive/308451/

Hushabusha · 09/05/2020 08:32

20 years since Trevor Deeley disappeared. Wow.
I also thought there was some more information on Philip Cairns? A DJ maybe? I don't remember properly.
And little Mary Boyle who disappeared in Donegal. Heart breaking

ellanwood · 09/05/2020 08:35

Thank you for that link @SydneyCarton. I'll read that today.

Heygirlheyboy · 09/05/2020 09:35

Wasn't there a real hope for finding out what happened Mary Boyle very recently? (Last 3/4 years) Yes I think Gareth O'Callaghan publicised something about Philip Cairns, I remember that schoolbag in the lane so well. I don't think anything came from the revelation tho. I think there's a suggestion that someone knows something about Mary Boyle..
