Mine is D. B. Cooper. He hijacked a beong 727, stole $1.25 million in today's money, and parachuted down to earth with it. His identity is unknown and it's unknown if he survived the plunge to earth.

If anyone wants to while away a few hours (or days!), the Unresolved Mysteries subreddit has a lot of really interesting stuff, especially if you sort by the top posts of all time.

Dyatlov Pass is one of my top ones!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 29/04/2020 17:38

Not so much a mystery but so bizarre. The two swedish twins Ursula and Sabina Eriksson who went running across the motorway. Both got hit by cars/lorry which was captured on camera by people doing a traffic cops series or something.
One after being released a few days later went on to stab a man. Then jumped off a 40ft bridge and broke her legs.

Know at the trial there was disorders brought up but how they survived running several times across the M6 even after one sister had been hit by a car she was off again.

CaroleFuckinBaskin · 29/04/2020 17:40

The two swedish twins Ursula and Sabina Eriksson who went running across the motorway.

Yes! That was just crazy stuff!

CoolCarrie · 29/04/2020 18:25

The film out recently about the Flannan lighthouse is called The Vanishing, Gerard Butler and Peter Mullan are in it, and it’s good, due to the actors involved, but a very unlikely resolution to the story, so solves nothing.

CoolCarrie · 29/04/2020 18:28

The behaviour of those twins is the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen , like something from a film, and it’s terrible that one of them went on to murder someone.

AdoptedBumpkin · 29/04/2020 18:32

Probably been mentioned, but Genette Tate is another one. More to that than meets the eye.

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 29/04/2020 18:48

@FthisS

Mary Boyle in ireland 77, she has an identical twin sister who claims it's been one huge cover up. There's a brilliant documentary on youtube

Wow. I've just watched a bit and will watch the rest later. That's horrific. Guessing it was the Uncle. Abused her and killed her to shut her up. Her sister said didn't she, she wouldn't keep quiet about something she was outspoken. Cried watching.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/04/2020 19:18

Is that the young woman who disappeared after a disco and was found in a quarry?

AdoptedBumpkin · 29/04/2020 19:23

Who are you addressing @Lordfrontpaw?

Missillusioned · 29/04/2020 19:53

There's evidence that Jack the Ripper wasn't a single killer at all but rather separate killers acting independently. The final victim had a boyfriend who was a possible suspect for her murder and Liz Stride wasn't mutilated. It was assumed this was due to lack of time but possibly just a different killer

Rodehereonthebus · 29/04/2020 19:54

I'd never heard of her but I just looked it up. How bloody awful. The fact that in each still shot the face is blocked by a post. I dread to think what happened to her. Heartbreaking.

I know, what rotten luck that there's nothing identifiable in the footage. You can't even tell if it's a man or a woman. I read an interview with Jennifer Kesse's parents from earlier this year and they're still holding out hope of her being found. Just tragic. I think one or more of the workers on the condo building site where she lived abducted and killed her.

louise5754 · 29/04/2020 19:57

I often think maybe the government were involved or aliens or people needed for lab tests.

It's strange how people disappear without a trace.

People can get new identities/ passports. Some of the people mixed up with drugs or crime may have actually gone abroad.

Maybe they literally disappear and no one knows about it because they never come back? Maybe witches? Magic? Who knows?

Claudia Lawrence and Corrie McKegaue are two cases that are in the media and there seems to be no explanation or reason as to why they would run away.

WaterIsWide · 29/04/2020 20:11

Thanks to a PP who advised the name of the book that is about Jack the Ripper's victims. I sometimes wonder about their lives prior to their murders. Should be an interesting read.

ofwarren · 29/04/2020 20:18

Charlene Downes from Blackpool.
There was a theory that she was chopped up and used in kebabs in one of the takeaways.
Doesn't bear thinking about, poor girl.

JudyGemstone · 29/04/2020 20:25

I've always thought Francis Tumblety was JTR.

The Five is a great book yeah.

eggerhunter · 29/04/2020 20:25

@LippyChick

This is an optical illusion which has an explanation! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autokinetic_effect

I accidentally recreated this with glow in the dark stars on the ceiling. I positioned them in such a position that they started moving around but only when I didn't look directly at them. I thought I was going mad so frantically googled and found out about this illusion :)

FthisS · 29/04/2020 20:34

Oh yes Charlene Downes her story is so sad. The disappearance of Charlene Downes on ch5 is heartbreaking. It seemed she had nobody and was failed so badly.
@ALovelyBitOfSquirrel it's awful isn't it. The fact that most locals probably have a pretty good idea of what happened to her but nobody has ever been held accountable.

AuntMasha · 29/04/2020 20:50

I listened to the episode on Charlene Downes on the “Redhanded” podcast. The poor girl was failed so badly. One of the details that was just unbelievable was that the main suspect, who was known for grooming young girls was actually allowed to adopt children!

AlternativePerspective · 29/04/2020 20:55

There was a programme on channel5 last night about the disappearance of Luke Durban. Had never heard of him but it made for interesting viewing, although I think it’s fairly evident that he got into a lot of trouble re drugs.

I also watched part of a programme about Steve Wright - the Suffolk strangler but fell asleep halfway through. So I looked up the details this morning and saw that the police do believe there could be a link between him and Suzy Lamplugh but unable to prove.

FthisS · 29/04/2020 21:40

My mistake it isn't called the disappearance but the murder of Charlene Downes, it's a 3 part and has interviews with her parents and the man accused. It's very dark and awful viewing. She was last seen on the Saturday night but nobody reported her missing until the Monday.

LadyEloise · 29/04/2020 21:48

Mary Boyle aged 6 Sad - her twin sister Ann believes there was a cover up. She believes a relative was involved.
She has fallen out with her mother over it I think.

@Hollyhobbi
Also Bernadette Connolly, aged 10, Collooney Co. Sligo - murdered in 1970.
There are theories that somebody in the local monastery may have been involved.
Nobody was ever charged. Sad

AuntMasha · 29/04/2020 21:57

I mistakenly said one of the main suspects in the Charlene Downes case was allowed to adopt, when in fact he was allowed to foster. Still mind-boggling.

bobstersmum · 29/04/2020 23:04

Will read this when I get chance, love a good mystery!

FelicityFlockheart · 29/04/2020 23:53

@AdoptedBumpkin genette Tate was more than likely murdered by Robert black

Packingsoapandwater · 30/04/2020 01:55

"i can't see anyone has mentioned Joyce Vincent, the dead woman who lay undiscovered for 2 years. Her death itself isn't so much a mystery, but why did no one report her missing? And who was she wrapping Christmas presents for?"

A lot of the beliefs surrounding the Vincent case are urban myths. In truth, her family had tried to find her for a long time, even hiring private investigators, when they did not hear from her.

It seems that Vincent may have been rehoused by an organisation that dealt with victims of domestic violence, so there was no paper trail and no one knew where she was living. This confounded the private investigators' efforts.

But her family did try to find her.
