He's exactly what I need in these strange times, so calming
Plus he has a new dog!

I like his gardens though, I like his gardening style: it’s a bit messy and looks like much less work than it actually is, but it’s so gorgeous and generous and romantic. I aspire for my garden to be like Monty’s.

So far I’m stuck at messy.

cressyeggy · 27/04/2020 18:29

Every time it's on I intend to switch it off but I actually love it. Especially Monty Don, such a calming kind encouraging man. Makes me feel I can do wonderful things to my garden I definitely can't though.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 27/04/2020 18:30

Ahh who remembers Geoff Hamilton doing Gardeners' World? I used to like watching him; another soothing voice. Pretty sure he died over 20 years ago, but even as a teen I would watch it with my mum.

Twenty2 · 27/04/2020 18:43

Geoff Hamilton died in the mid 1990s @BobbinThreadbare123 Sad He was the best Gardeners' World presenter ever. Can't abide Monty Don, his insufferable smugness has spoiled the programme for me and I can't watch it any more.

SpringFan · 27/04/2020 20:09

I know what twenty 2 means, Monty can see a bit smug, but we love Nigel and Nellie. I miss Geoff Hamilton too - and Geoffrey Smith ! ( I still have Mr Smith propogates plants and use it) I am warming to Adam and his cat though.

Slychomping · 28/04/2020 10:21

I'm old enough to remember Geoff Hamilton. He died relatively young didn't he?

Gosh, I genuinely don't think Monty comes across as smug or insufferable at all.
I find him quite affable and pragmatic.

Just look at his blog for this month. He acknowledges that having a garden (esp in current circs) is a privilege and a luxury and goes on to explain how you can grow herbs in window boxes.

And he admits to being a broadcaster and writer rather than a gardener as he doesn't garden full time.

He a had a mini stroke in 2008 attributed to being overworked (he is a workaholic apparently, or used to be before he was ill) and the Beeb famously didn't pay him a penny while he was off air recuperating for six weeks.

He's completely self taught and although I assume he must have help with his garden nowadays, he initially created it from from scruffy pasture.

He's also spoken openly about his battle with depression. And his bankruptcy when the jewellery business went belly up.

And although a pp described his series of gardens within Longmeadow as "absurd" , they allow him to explain and demonstrate all the different tips and techniques bbc viewers may have relating to fruit and veg cultivation, tending a lawn, container gardening or creating a herbaceous border etc. So they do serve a purpose.

Yup, concur with all the Monty love - a real gardener with mud on his boots, dirty hands and nails, often sporting plasters too, very much in the mould of Geoff Hamilton (Adam Frost served an apprenticeship with Geoff) and Geoffrey Smith.

Not afraid to admit to failures too, when things go wrong. Long may he be at the helm, though Adam, as a potential successor, would be no bad thing, in due course.

VenusClapTrap · 28/04/2020 11:26

Percy Thrower. Now THERE was a solid TV gardener.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 28/04/2020 11:34

It's a bit tiresome that Gardener's World has become 'the Monty show'. I find him really humourless, and bloody rude about non-gardeners (and I say that as a gardener).

MrsCakeTheMedium · 28/04/2020 11:58

I love Monty. I can't stand Adam's voice or accent and can't watch him.

lovinglavidaloca · 28/04/2020 12:16

I’ve got a right crush on Adam

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/04/2020 12:21

I love them both. They both make me feel calm and I watch religiously. Can't wait for the longer episodes

ThomasHardyPerennial · 28/04/2020 12:27

Why does it have to be one or the other? I think it's a more interesting programme with a range of presenters.

leckford · 28/04/2020 12:30

Lovely Monty and his dogs, best program of the week. If only the garden centres were open, it is a disgrace they are forced to shut and destroy millions of plants.

NotMyNigel · 28/04/2020 12:37

Monty has two full time gardeners and his wife Sarah also does a huge amount of work in the garden.

He’s is very honest that the broadcasting / writing etc is a full time job.

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/04/2020 12:49

He always uses "we" to make it clear that it isn't just him doing that huge garden.

Willow2017 · 28/04/2020 13:05

I kept missing the new series so i binge watched it all the other night. The most relaxing evening i have had in ages.

Love Montys style and all the different garden areas. Nobody has to stick to one style anyone can experiment till they find what works for them and his gives people ideas. I like how he happily admits when things didn't work and how to try it differently. If he was so smug he wouldnt admit to failures.

I am def crushing on Adam too. So calm, funny and down to earth. Laughing at himself when he said nobody was paying attention because they were watching the cat was funny and just like someone talking to a mate. A natural presenter not preachy just sharing advice with a bit of fun.
Long may they both continue to keep us all sane.
Btw i love Carol and her boundless enthusiasm and Rachels calm no fuss approach too.
Roll on Friday.😄

VenusClapTrap · 28/04/2020 13:06

Why does it have to be one or the other?

I agree. I’d like to see a lot more of Carol Klein, Rachel de Thame and the other occasional presenters.

FlamingoAndJohn · 28/04/2020 13:13

I love Monty and Gardeners World.
My friends and I had scheduled a web chat for a Friday night but we moved it to Saturdays because we all wanted to watch GW.
It took me some time to get to like Adam but I have taken to him.

When GW is off air Monty just curls up in a corner of the garden, the moss grows over him and robins nest in his hair. He wakes up again with the spring - fact.

Flamingo
A kind of modern day Radagast?😄😄

FlamingoAndJohn · 28/04/2020 14:10

Monty over the winter.

Thank God for Monty Don
aerosocks · 28/04/2020 14:15

He's all right, but I don't get the impression that he's a grass-roots son-of-the-soil gardener like Geoff Hamilton was, or Alan Titchmarsh.

I find him a bit superficial. Met him at Chelsea last year though. Seemed nice enough I like Chris Beardshaw better

Parkandride · 28/04/2020 14:59

@FlamingoAndJohn Grin

Exciting news everyone my gardeners world magazine has been shipped, it comes with free seeds! And a 2 for 1 voucher for gardens, if we can ever leave the house again...

I'm going to try and pay more attention to Adam this week

OP posts:
NotMyNigel · 28/04/2020 20:50

I can confirm that Adam is lovely, he’s exactly the same in rl as he is on screen. Very down to earth, hard working family man.
