To ask wtf to do with tinned sardines?

judemom · 21/04/2020 17:32

I bought too much canned sardines in olive oil to prep for the lockdown.

DH dislikes sardines, so I now have to eat them all.

Any recipes or suggestions on how to eat them? On a salad? Can you cook them?

Do you have cats?

Mine love tined sardines Grin

PhantomErik · 21/04/2020 19:03

*tinned!

OhMargo · 21/04/2020 19:04

I just eat then from the tin, bones and all for the calcium, with oil dripping down my mouth. Gorgeous stuff, but I often forget how delicious they are.

Take them to a midnight feast with lashings of ginger beer.

(Have just been watching the excellent Malory Towers on iPlayer!)

Sardines on toast! Mmm! Lightly toast the bread as you would for cheese on toast then spread the sardines on and under the grill.

I think I'll add some sardines to my trolly when I next go to Aldi!

Stronger76 · 21/04/2020 19:17

I'm mainly pescatarian and decided that tinned sardines would tide me over if there was a supply chain issue and couldn't find fish to buy?

The only supply chain issue was morons clearing the shelves of stuff they don't know what to do with/can't store toilet rolls, baked beans, sardines

AdaColeman · 21/04/2020 19:20

Top pizza with them, or add to a tomato sauce with olives & capers for a quick pasta dish, or bake on top of sliced lemons and serve them together on top of rice.
But best eaten broken up on very fresh thickly buttered white bread with a good shake of malt vinegar over them.

bloodywhitecat · 21/04/2020 19:27

I peel back the lid, give them to the chickens and run as fast as I can because the little buggers love sardines.

Ohffs66 · 21/04/2020 19:27

Do you have a dog? Mine LOVES sardines!

Mysterian · 21/04/2020 19:33

I eat them out the tin. Head end first with me looking up at the ceiling (Or clouds outside)(Or stars at night) so I can pretend to be a penguin.

Giggorata · 21/04/2020 19:39

All of these suggestions are wonderful, can't wait to try them!
DH, the animal, just likes them on toast. Still, it's an easy, cheap breakfast.
I often chuck 'em into my fish pie.

JustStayHome · 21/04/2020 19:40

On toast

Barrique · 21/04/2020 19:56

DH once made a sandwich with sardines, mint jelly and peanut butter because that was what was in the cupboard.

Sometimes every day with a Y in it I wonder why I married him.

lizzie1970a · 21/04/2020 20:48

I like the ones in tomato sauce, mashed up, salt and pepper, either in a sandwich with cold butter or on toast. Lovely.

mindutopia · 21/04/2020 21:04

On toast with mustard. One of my true pleasures of lunch at my grandparents as a child, which sounds so strange when I think about it now. I still love them. They won’t go off forever though.

CaffeineInfusion · 21/04/2020 21:25

Love them on toast for lunch.

But since the panic buying started, I can't find them for love nor money. 🙄

Wineloffa · 21/04/2020 21:31

I love them on toast. They are full of Omega 3 and Vitamin D which we all need right now!

GetawayfromthatWelshtart · 21/04/2020 21:31

Drain them and grill them (do it on some tin foil so your grill pan doesn't reek of them) and eat with black pepper and lemon juice. Very naice with a salad and tomatoes

Or drain, mash them with some ketchup and bung them on toast and pop under the grill for a bit.... mmmmm...

or get a cat and share them straight from the tin. Grin

OneKeyAtATime · 21/04/2020 21:34

I have mine with vinegar on top.

I was to try the pasta dish now though !

LockedDownNOut · 21/04/2020 21:40
  1. mix in with egg and scramble as normal.
  1. Slice onions, tomatoes and peppers, add in seasoning, empty in your sardines with the oil and stir fry together. Eat with potatoes, yummy!

Failing that, send them to me in post.

Quarantimespringclean · 21/04/2020 21:42

Mash them, adding a little white wine vinegar and spread on granary bread that you have toasted on one side. Top with thin strips of cross crossed anchovies, rings of red onion and sliced black olives. Drizzle with a little olive oil and grill.

Sally2791 · 21/04/2020 21:43

On toast or on pizza

augustusglupe · 21/04/2020 21:51

I like them on hot, buttered toast or I plonk them on top of a nice big salad. I love them though, so could also just eat them straight from the tin.
I’m the only one who likes them in our house.

ISawATiger · 21/04/2020 21:52

I heard tigers love them
