To ask wtf to do with tinned sardines?

judemom · 21/04/2020 17:32

I bought too much canned sardines in olive oil to prep for the lockdown.

DH dislikes sardines, so I now have to eat them all.

Any recipes or suggestions on how to eat them? On a salad? Can you cook them?

Boswell beat me to it Grin

What @abraid said. Google pate de sardinha, it's easy cheap and lush. Do as a dip or spread.

To ask Wtf to do with tinned sardines?
Just chuck them in the bin Ffs. Don't open them just straight in the bin. Disgusting, slimy, stinky buggers

Pasta con le sarde- traditional Sicilian dish can be made with tinned sardines. There are loads of variations if you Google.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 21/04/2020 18:18

Pasta con sarde - it's Sicilian and one of my favourites. Sardines, pine nuts, fennel and raisins.

Replace for the anchovies in puttanesca?

houseinthemiddleofthestreet · 21/04/2020 18:21

When DP moved in he brought all the tins he had in his cupboards. I came in from work one night and there was a horrendous smell. He was frying up a tin of sardines with some limburger cheese he had found in the fridge. It was one of the worst smells I have ever encountered Envy not envy.

boomchikawowwow · 21/04/2020 18:22

I give them to my dog!

Bakedpotatoandgin · 21/04/2020 18:24

Mash them with mango chutney and a bit of curry powder and put them under the grill on toast. Or in a toastie. Or mash with lemon and pepper and use them on a sandwich with cucumber. Or mash them with tomato puree and use them as a topping for pan pizza (self raising flour, olive oil and water dough, done in a frying pan then under the grill to melt the cheese). Or add them to tomato sauce for pasta or couscous.

I really like them. Sometimes I put them on top of a salad and I often eat them straight from the tin!

Redcrayons · 21/04/2020 18:28

This is one of my favourite on toast combos.

Sometimes I mash with a bit of mayo and a squeeze of lemon if I’ve got any in. Otherwise just straight from the tin.

justtakeatowel · 21/04/2020 18:30

@SandrasAnnoyingFriend I was going to suggest the same

Peel back the lid and eat straight from the tin. add some black pepper if you're feeling fancy

TheLightGetsIn · 21/04/2020 18:32

They go well with anything tomato based. Sardines and tomatoes on toast, add them to a tomato pasta sauce etc. I also give them to DC instead of anchovies if we're having something with anchovies in it, as they're lower in salt.

BikeRunSki · 21/04/2020 18:37

pate or fishcakes

RoLaren · 21/04/2020 18:39

Straight from the tin, yummy!

TheSandman · 21/04/2020 18:41

Personally I like them cold straight from the tin on top of a bowl of hot rice with light soy dashed over.

Though I am puzzled why would you buy "too much" of stuff you don't know how to use while prepping? And why do you need to 'use them up' with any urgency? They're not going anywhere. They last for years.

judemom · 21/04/2020 18:45

I bought many tins when prepping, and ran out of freezer space for fish.

I'm mainly pescatarian and decided that tinned sardines would tide me over if there was a supply chain issue and couldn't find fish to buy?

In my house they are kept in the back of the cupboard until years out of date then I throw them away !!!

BlueJava · 21/04/2020 18:48

I am so fancying mashed on toast rightnow!!

HeimdallSaysNo · 21/04/2020 18:54

Wash off the oil. Break them up. Mix with a can of chopped tomatoes, and any dried herbs you can get. Warm through on the hob, add tinned olives if you have them, mix well, add to pasta. Can feed two.

ritzbiscuits · 21/04/2020 18:54

One of my favourite dishes - Pasta with sardines, rocket and breadcrumbs. Ours is out of a Gordon Ramsey book but sure it exists online.

Hobbes8 · 21/04/2020 18:57

They’ll last ages - no need to rush.

They’re nice mashed up with cream cheese and a bit of chilli and spread on toast or as a jacket potato topping though.

joystir59 · 21/04/2020 19:00

Mash with a squeeze of lemon juice and eat with hot buttered toast or salad.

joystir59 · 21/04/2020 19:01

I'm at work and really hungry- I want sardines now!
