If you walked 8 miles would you be knackered?

I am a usual 3 mile a day person (with the dogs). Decided to go a bit further today as bored and then got lost (live in the middle of nowhere before anyone tells me off and have literally seen not one other person except a man In the far distance on a bike). Been out for about 3 hours in the end and my tracker says I've walked 8.5 miles. I'm bloody exhausted. Does that suggest I am very unfit? I thought I was fairly healthy but clearly not.
In my defence I do have a bit of arthritis controlled by meds and I didn't have a drink or anything With me so probably a touch dehydrated as well.

i do that daily at work, but obviously interspersed with breaks and quieter moments

fresh air and moving up/down hills etc will make it rougher for you. you did it thoughts clearly are fit enough to manage it

Concerned12345 · 18/04/2020 16:23

Yes, would have a few aches and pains slightly in joints to.

YouStupidBoy · 18/04/2020 16:23

No I'd not be knackered, but I run 6 - 10 every morning and do long runs of 30 every weekend if I am training for a long race or 12- 20 if just for pleasure. I suspect you're just knackered as you almost tripled your daily distance but that would improve rapidly (if you wanted to do that) with a gradual increase I am sure.

For me it depends on the pace. I tend to walk quite quickly, so I would be knackered after 8 miles.

However, I've been taking my DC's on walks and although we are walking for about an hour, its at a much more leisurely pace (probably would take bloody 8 hours to walk 8 miles at their speed!)

ihatethecold · 18/04/2020 16:25

yes.

MysweetAudrina · 18/04/2020 16:26

I think the fact that you got a bit lost probably made you more tired. It can make you more weary than if you had set out for a specific 8 mile walk.

Makeitgoaway · 18/04/2020 16:27

I'm fit, I ran 10 miles this morning. An 8m walk would be easily achievable for me but yes, I'd be tired after 3.5 hours on my feet in the fresh air. Glad to sit down with a cuppa and likely have a nap.

VettiyaIruken · 18/04/2020 16:29

I'd have to be transported home in a wheelbarrow.

Puddlesplasher · 18/04/2020 16:29

No. I would be able to do that without being tired and I'm very, very fat.

MurrayTheMonk · 18/04/2020 16:30

It's mainly my ankles that hurt but that's the old Arthur I suppose Sad

Quarantined · 18/04/2020 16:32

No, I wouldn't be knackered.

MurrayTheMonk · 18/04/2020 16:32

If someone had offered me a wheel barrow at the bottom of one of the hills I would have taken it Grin

I’m very unfit but I would be ok with 8 miles. 14 miles is where I hurt.

midnightstar66 · 18/04/2020 16:34

Yes I'm pretty active and on my feet all day at work but I'd be tired walking that far non stop in the fresh air with varying terrain

taptonaria27 · 18/04/2020 16:34

I walk v similar to you with the dog and I'd definitely know about it if I'd gone as far as you today. I'd do it ok but would have a few aches and pains and a strong urge for a nap!

Redcrayons · 18/04/2020 16:34

Well I can run 8 miles easily enough. So I’m theory I should be able to walk it and not feel tired. Time on my feet might be a factor and I might feel more tired after 3 hours.

AgeLikeWine · 18/04/2020 16:34

If the terrain was fairly flat, definitely not. I walked 14 km (8.7 miles) one day last week and I was a bit tired but definitely not exhausted. I could easily have walked further. Felt fine the next day & did another 12km walk. And yes, I did walk from my house and maintain strict social distancing before some hysterical idiot accuses me of trying to kill her children...

If I walked 8 miles including significant hills, I would be knackered and my legs would be stiff the next day.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/04/2020 16:36

If it was hilly, a bit stiff the next day. And would probably sleep well that night.

TheEndIsBillNighy · 18/04/2020 16:37

Just returned from 7.5 mile walk (I usually walk 7-10km on a daily basis, but throw the 7.5 mile in when I have the time), and as soon as I returned I felt a bit light headed, but I do power walk. A cup of tea sorted me out, so get that kettle on!

AmelieTaylor · 18/04/2020 16:38

I'd be fine at the time, but my knees would be absolutely screwed the next day & I'd be feeling a bit tired. Especially if I'd been 'lost' (I live near a huge wooded common and I frequently get 'lost' and I end up walking miles further than I set out to. Mind you I'm being super careful not to do that at the moment so I don't need 'rescuing' 🤣

No

lazylinguist · 18/04/2020 16:40

I'd be a bit tired, but not knackered. Dh, the dc and I did 7.5 miles the other day. We live on the edge of the Lake District and our long walks are usually in the fells, but we are not driving into the national park now, so our lockdown local, flatter walks are feeling quite easy by comparison!

MurrayTheMonk · 18/04/2020 16:43

It was quite hilly. Will see how I feel tomorrow. I haven't been on the new meds that long so it will be a good test for them. I'm only 40 and used to walk a lot further with ease but it took a while to get diagnosed and then a while to fiddle with meds to get something that seems to work-so we shall see...just interesting to know if it's average to be tired after that length of walk.
Probably would have helped if I'd had better shoes than my basic white plimsolls on as well to be fair 🙄. No support in them.
The dogs are sparko at least and hopefully I will sleep better tonight as have been waking between 3 and 4 and not getting back to sleep for about three weeks and that's made me feel a bit groggy as well.
