If you walked 8 miles would you be knackered?

I am a usual 3 mile a day person (with the dogs). Decided to go a bit further today as bored and then got lost (live in the middle of nowhere before anyone tells me off and have literally seen not one other person except a man In the far distance on a bike). Been out for about 3 hours in the end and my tracker says I've walked 8.5 miles. I'm bloody exhausted. Does that suggest I am very unfit? I thought I was fairly healthy but clearly not.
In my defence I do have a bit of arthritis controlled by meds and I didn't have a drink or anything With me so probably a touch dehydrated as well.

at 40 with crappy shoes - yes. I did a flat walk about that last year in decent walking boots, but I'm quite a bit older and yes it did hurt.

I wouldn't worry but do wear proper shoes next time!

travailtotravel · 18/04/2020 16:46

I'd be tired but mainly because I hadn't had a drink with me. Cuppa and a sit down and you should be ok.

AnnofPeeves · 18/04/2020 16:51

If it was very hilly and rough terrain, I'd be a bit tired afterwards. If it was flatter and on paths, it would be ok. I've got multi level disc disease. Am sure you're right about footwear, good walking shoes or boots make such a difference especially when you've got musculoskeketal issues. I buy the best I can afford and it does make a difference.

Time on feet counts for a lot more than distance IME. 8 mile run, I’d be fine. 3.5 hours continuously on my feet, I’d probably need a sit down and a drink.

BadlyAgedMemes · 18/04/2020 16:52

No knackered as in generally tired, but my foot would probably ache pretty bad.

MurrayTheMonk · 18/04/2020 16:53

I have actually got some proper walking shoes but hadn't intended on going that far, so it's my own fault-only stayed out because DP is driving me mad so thought it best to socially distance from him for a bit before we kill each other Grin.

I’d be tired if I didn’t have a small snack and water with me. If I had those then I could probably do about 12-14 miles before I’d really start to hurt and feel exhausted.
I did about 12 miles a day for 2 weeks in Japan last year and I felt crippled when I got home and could barely walk a week

ClashCityRocker · 18/04/2020 17:09

I'd definitely know I'd done it and have various niggles starting up. It wouldn't be enough to say stop me doing anything active the next day, but I'd be wanting a good night's sleep and a decent meal.

BarbedBloom · 18/04/2020 17:10

I have rheumatoid arthritis and hypermobility. Even if I did manage it, I wouldn't be able to walk for a week after. I'll just have the tea Grin

Zisforstripyoss · 18/04/2020 17:11

I'd be rosy cheeked and happily tired. I am quite fit and often run more than 8 miles anyway.

Well done OP.

Zenithbear · 18/04/2020 17:13

Not knackered but I would feel it. I usually walk about 5 miles a day.

Redwinestillfine · 18/04/2020 17:15

Not if I took it slowly but 8 miles in 3 hours must have been at a reasonable pace op

BikeRunSki · 18/04/2020 17:17

No, I’d feel it, but I wouldn’t be tired.

QuixoticQuokka · 18/04/2020 17:18

No, that's just a two hour walk. We do a 5 mile hilly walk a few times a week and I wear barefoot trainers (thin sole, no support).

Pickles89 · 18/04/2020 17:18

An hour is my limit!! I'm the first to admit I'm overweight and unfit though.

PickAChew · 18/04/2020 17:19

Yes! I can do 4 miles easily enough but things would hurt after 8 as I'm falling apart at the seams.

Bluewater1 · 18/04/2020 17:20

Yes

eurochick · 18/04/2020 17:20

I'd be knackered and probably a bit shaky with low blood sugar.

Connie222 · 18/04/2020 17:24

I’d be crying in a heap on the floor.
(Would have caved and got an Uber half way).

ParkheadParadise · 18/04/2020 17:25

Yes, I'd probably be dead.

ThursdayLastWeek · 18/04/2020 17:27

I wouldn’t be tired at the end of the walk, but I’d feel it later that day.
It’s quite a long time to be on your feet!
But you made it home and that’s a good bit of stamina you’ve got there!

formerbabe · 18/04/2020 17:28

I walked eight miles in one go once from work to home...central London to the suburbs...in flip flops. I was exhausted.

Puffinhead · 18/04/2020 17:28

I would be ok but it’s usually the heat that gets to me. If I feel hot and sweaty then that makes me miserable so I’d find it more exhausting

itssquidstella · 18/04/2020 17:30

No, but I love walking and have done a lot of hiking in challenging terrain (have climbed Kilimanjaro, hiked to Everest base camp etc).

I should have been on a Gold DofE practice expedition last week and am gutted it had to be cancelled. That would have been three days of walking around 14-18km a day in Snowdonia. I always eat and sleep well after a day on the hill, though!

Numbness2020 · 18/04/2020 17:30

I'd have to be transported home in a wheelbarrow.

This ^ I’m not even sure I’d be able to get into the wheelbarrow
