If you walked 8 miles would you be knackered?

I am a usual 3 mile a day person (with the dogs). Decided to go a bit further today as bored and then got lost (live in the middle of nowhere before anyone tells me off and have literally seen not one other person except a man In the far distance on a bike). Been out for about 3 hours in the end and my tracker says I've walked 8.5 miles. I'm bloody exhausted. Does that suggest I am very unfit? I thought I was fairly healthy but clearly not.
In my defence I do have a bit of arthritis controlled by meds and I didn't have a drink or anything With me so probably a touch dehydrated as well.

I wouldnt feel very tired after this but I cycle about 100 miles a week. I'm not particularly fit having said that; I'm still significantly overweight.

Veterinari · 18/04/2020 19:12

I think it's the 3.5 hrs of being in your get rather than the distance covered IYSWIM. I'm been more tired after a king walk than a half marathon - I think it's posture and time-on-feet

amusedbush · 18/04/2020 19:12

I’m four stone overweight but fairly sprightly and wouldn’t be knackered after that. We go on a lot of city breaks and easily walk 20km a day.

If I’m wearing trainers, I’m fine. However, I’ve noticed that my feet and calves get really sore if we walk a lot when I’m wearing loafers/pumps.

No, I do that every day of the year.

RunningNinja79 · 18/04/2020 19:52

Yes initially.

Up until 6 weeks ago I was training for my 3rd marathon and ran 16 miles. However, walking always takes it out of me more than running. After walking one of my regular running routes (usually when I CBA to run, but still want the outside and fresh air) I'm usually more tired.

Once I've sat down and rested for a bit (half an hour or so) I'm usually OK.

june2007 · 18/04/2020 19:59

Generally no.

MurrayTheMonk · 18/04/2020 20:01

Well I had half an hour sit down and about three pints of water Grin and I feel alright except for sore ankles...
tomorrow morning will be the test I think! Though I'm doing a 12 hour shift in my care home tomorrow so hoping nothing too awful.
Will deffo wear proper shoes next time.

Currently I’d struggle with that as have a suspected tear in my ACL which is really painful after a couple of miles.
I went for a walk this morning (which I have to do daily for my knackered back!) and it really pissed my leg off at about the 1.5 mile mark. I hobbled the remaining 1.5 miles home.
On a regular day though 8 miles is what a cover over the course of the day, not on one solo walk - I expect I’d be tired but certainly not dead on my feet. I usually run 6 miles every other day so an 8 mile walk would be okay.

Newjez · 18/04/2020 20:23

We generally walk about that far in summer, sometimes a bit further, but only walk about three miles in winter. We would build up to it, increasing a mile or two each week in spring.
If I did eight miles today I would be sore as I'm on the vulnerable list and haven't walked for a month.

june2007 · 18/04/2020 20:46

Yes def build up and wear the right things. It,s not always about the distance either, whether and terrain make a nig difference. Any one walked Harland key to Harland point. (And back) That is quite a tyring walk.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 18/04/2020 20:56

I can do 8 miles, but the fatigue would outweighed by the agony. My left knee is about as fucked as a knee can be and remain attached. The cycling equivalent would be about 40, and that's quite relaxing.

springydaff · 18/04/2020 21:33

8 miles? I'd be dead.

I'm not overweight much but I went on an 8 mile walk with a walking group about 5 years ago and I was practically hallucinating by the end, my legs felt entirely separate, thudding away beneath me.

Lovely walking group but I just can't handle 8 miles. That's their minimum length so I haven't been back, which is a shame.

SoloMummy · 18/04/2020 21:35

I have RA too and am early 40s.
I can walk long distances. So can and do walk 8 miles.
Last time I did this I walked over really difficult terrain and I was stiffer than had been for 3 or 4 days after, principally my worst knee caused the issue, but not awful.
However, cycling 8-10 kills me! That tells me I am seriously unfit!

springydaff · 18/04/2020 22:28

It doesn't help that my 84yo friend can easily tackle 8 miles+ Shock

She's a lifetime walker. I met her on ramblers walk (I don't know why they call it rambling because its anything but).

Dogwithanovenmit · 18/04/2020 23:29

I’ve been walking 4 miles most days and I’m pretty tired after that and my hips ache. 8 would definitely exhausting unless it was at a slower pace than usual and with a break or two. I’m 60 with a soft tissue disorder.

Katinski · 18/04/2020 23:37

I reckon I'd do that easily if I was after the perfect pair of shoes or a new coatGrin

JigsawsAreCool · 18/04/2020 23:42

No. That wouldn't even make me blink. I walk 99 thousand miles a day. I even walk when I'm sleeping, anyone who uses a bed is lazy to be honest.

On a Wednesday I run 7 marathons back to back to give me a little bit of exercise.

But I really need to do more. Wink

My legs would be twitchy after that too @MurrayTheMonk esp unplanned/build up for and just out the blue

ChristmasCarcass · 19/04/2020 00:02

Depends on the terrain and on how supportive your boots are.

Powering up and down hard chalk hills in unsupportive shoes - aching feet and knees.

Sauntering along a soft muddy towpath in decent boots - no issue.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/04/2020 02:15

I can't walk more than a mile, often less. I used to be able to walk more.

managedmis · 19/04/2020 02:18

I haven't walked that far in a long time but I don't think I'd be too bad. It's a fair walk

Camomila · 19/04/2020 03:01

If supervising the DC or with the baby in the sling then yes. If by myself in comfy trainers no.
I love walking, a few weeks before lockdown I had to take DS2 to the prolonged jaundice clinic but didn't want to get on the bus so walked about 1.45mins to the hospital, it was lovely weather and so nice walking through town with everyone out and about.

PeytonManning · 19/04/2020 03:07

I wouldn’t be tired but I would be ready for a good pub lunch. Oh how I miss that!

vanillandhoney · 19/04/2020 06:57

In the wrong shoes I'd definitely be struggling - but with the right ones then eight miles is fine.

I did once go out with my dad and we got lost - ended up walking eighteen miles. Don't think I spoke to him for the last five 😂

swapsicles · 19/04/2020 07:38

I could do that but I'd be worried if i needed the loo! Usually walking all day long at work but now have gone out for walks and even a 3 mile walk means im am absolutely dying for the loo when I get near home

MurrayTheMonk · 19/04/2020 07:43

Well the good news is I actually feel alright this morning. Lesson learned on the shoe issue I think!
Off for my 12 hours at work now-at the end of which I will definitely feel knackered!!
