If you walked 8 miles would you be knackered?

I am a usual 3 mile a day person (with the dogs). Decided to go a bit further today as bored and then got lost (live in the middle of nowhere before anyone tells me off and have literally seen not one other person except a man In the far distance on a bike). Been out for about 3 hours in the end and my tracker says I've walked 8.5 miles. I'm bloody exhausted. Does that suggest I am very unfit? I thought I was fairly healthy but clearly not.
In my defence I do have a bit of arthritis controlled by meds and I didn't have a drink or anything With me so probably a touch dehydrated as well.

I really love walking but I have arthritis and very dodgy feet. I’m getting back into it after a recent joint replacement, but I think my present limit would be 5 miles.

Poorlyweasels · 18/04/2020 17:35

We did this the other week. Got lost and ended up walking over 7 miles. Won't be doing that again in a hurry!

ellanwood · 18/04/2020 17:36

Not knackered as in needing a sleep, but my dodgy foot would be complaining loudly.

At the moment YES. I'm bloody exhausted stuck inside with two boys bouncing off the walls and fighting all day. There's the young working dog too chewing everything to bits and whining as she's used to 3 long walks too.

Usually I do about 8-10 miles and class that a good walk.

I didn't think we were supposed to be out that long though.

Difficultcustomer · 18/04/2020 17:37

I wouldn’t get near to attempting it. I’m very unfit - just manage a mile at one go. (I’m trying to slowly increase.) I’m much better at the gym where the treadmill is flat surface). I have cerebral palsy, but it isn’t too severe and I should do more.

Fanthorpe · 18/04/2020 17:39

If I keep up a good pace and it’s not too windy I’d feel pretty good after 8 miles. If I walk slow and it’s windy I’d be exhausted.

I cycled 30k last week in the sunshine and when I got home I slept like I’d been sand-bagged.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 18/04/2020 17:44

depends on hills and footwear. on flattish ground, in running trainers I'd be fine. Without decent trainers I'd be footsore, and with some serious and sustained inclines I'd definitely feel it.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 18/04/2020 17:52

No, I run 10k every other day and walk the dogs for 5 miles most mornings, so it wouldn't be a stretch. I couldn't do it daily, though, my right hip would let me know after a few days.

Lozz22 · 18/04/2020 17:55

Did 8 miles on mixed terrain in my sandals last year. Pretty much all up hill going and then climbing down some pretty steep steps and rocks. My lower left back ached like mad during it but I found out I was Pregnant a few days later. Did a walk in Ibiza last year as well up a massive hill, had flip flops on fell flat on my face and had to chase after my water bottle that went rolling back down the hill. Not my finest moment in life Grin that one also involved climbing over big boulder rocks and lots of very uneven and lose big stones. We didn't realise that which is why I had daft footwear on

woodencoffeetable · 18/04/2020 17:58

I would be hungry Grin
possibly tired a bit earlier than usual, but not achey.
I walk a lot.

Lllot5 · 18/04/2020 18:00

I’d be absolutely fucking shagged.

LAlady · 18/04/2020 18:02

My daughter and I did 12.66 km yesterday (7.8 miles) in 2 hours 36 mins. Felt tired when we got home but a cup of tea and bath and we were fine. Both of us are fit, exercise everyday, but there was one point where my daughter wasn't talking to me ! We walk a lot but that was a bit too far.

woodencoffeetable · 18/04/2020 18:02

mind you, we were hiking along the coastal path in dorset a couple of years ago, so a lot of steps up and down the cliffs.
that got our thighs burning.

op warm bath with epsom salt. that always works wonders for muscle aches ime

Hill1991 · 18/04/2020 18:04

Not going to lie if I did An 8mile walk I would need an ambulance Grin

TheLongDarkBreakfastTime · 18/04/2020 18:09

I would want a cup of tea and a sit down, but would be fine after half an hour. But I usually (pre lockdown) walk about 10k steps a day, and last time I went for a walk without DC it was about 19km, according to my phone.

Cloudhopping · 18/04/2020 18:09

I would be tired and have to sit down afterwards for a while but would quickly recover (I’m late 40’s) although I would use it as an excuse to sit on my arse for the rest of the day!

Fanthorpe · 18/04/2020 18:11

FudgeBrownie I love that you run in kilometres but walk in miles!

KenDodd · 18/04/2020 18:11

No

BackforGood · 18/04/2020 18:11

It's the hills that make a difference.
I could happily walk 8 miles on the flat, but am not a fan of contour lines.

I also think that the idea of setting out for an 8 mile walk - properly equipped, with some nice scenery, or enjoyable company, and a picnic and enough to drink, is a very different prospect from incidentally walking that far, with no picnic and not being expecting to in the first place.

Prisonbreak · 18/04/2020 18:24

I would be ok but I’m training to climb Kilimanjaro so I regularly walk 10 miles a day

Pipandmum · 18/04/2020 18:48

That's about 20,000 steps. It makes a big difference going over rough ground though (whether hilly or not). Plus you might be a bit stressed if you are feeling lost.

Crikey0000 · 18/04/2020 18:51

I'd probably enjoy a sit down at the end of it but I doubt if feel knackered. Perhaps you should increase your distance gradually to increase your fitness & stamina. HIIT training would also help.

BeetrootRocks · 18/04/2020 18:51

Fiat would be ok
Hilly I would know about it

Just did 4.5 with the kids, some hilly bits, that was fine

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 18/04/2020 18:58

More than 5 miles and I would be feeling it for sure, also your weren't planning on walking that far and didn't have a drink with you. Make sure you rehydrate this evening, maybe have a good soak and a stretch too.

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 18/04/2020 19:01

@Difficultcustomer have a look at Leslie Sansone on YouTube, she does some excellent walking fitness videos from 1 up to 3 miles which are very easy to follow and build up your fitness quickly.
